Conversions and Resilient Materials
2018
Nowadays different and various forms of resilience draw our attention but, there is no doubt that, among all the inflated meanings of this term, we are greatly attracted by the one concerning the ability of the material itself to regenerate in a different present when it is widely employed both in sophisticated technologies and also in very simple methodologies to support Man in his research, his knowledge and his production in a world still to be planned far from the logic of the brutal beton. Today the anthropic world of what has already been built must be reconsidered in terms of redesign, systemic rewording, methods and results employed in the making (even in the case of new artifacts).…

HAGHÌA TRIÀDA (CRETA): REINTEGRAZIONE DELLA LACUNA COME PRESENZA DELL’ASSENZA
2015
Research and Projects for the Recovery of the “Tifeo” Power Station in Augusta
2015
The buildings of the Tifeo Augusta Power Station (SR) significantly tell us, even today, the history of the Sicilian industrial dream at the end of the Fifties. However, with the passing of time, it revealed the underlying contradictions still present today in Augusta together with polluting and oppressive petrochemical plants built during those times. Regardless of any recovery theory about the Augusta Power Station, it is clear that an open and multidisciplinary look cannot be ignored, locating the power station in the actual and future setting of the vastest territory in which it is sited. The past, the present and, of course, the future of the Augusta area are tightly connected to the s…
Restauro. Concetti: orientamenti e tendenze attuali
2020
The essay is the introduction to the first topic of the Reuso20 conference, "Restoration: contemporary themes for a dialectical comparison". It contains stimulating interventions on the dialectics between Conservation and Accessibility, Conservation and Safety, in the context of religious buildings affected by an earthquake, between Conservation and Reuse, in the areas of churches, monasteries and castles, exemplified by concrete experiences conducted on different types of buildings, together with a reflection on the impact that tourism can induce on the protection of monuments, especially archaeological ones, in the name of 'enhancement'. These are in fact the central themes on which we ar…

A comparative study of different formulations of poultices for soluble salts removal from experimental plasters
2017
Soluble salts extractive capability of some commercial materials currently used in plaster restoration sector (ArbocelTM plus sepiolite; ArbocelTM, sepiolite and sand; Westox-Cocoon®) were tested in the present study, with the aim to evaluate their efficiency, their compatibility with the substrates as well as in terms of costs and duration of intervention. The three poultice products were first characterized in terms of porosimetric distribution. The desalination tests have been performed on samples of plaster specially formulated and made at the laboratory. Experimental specimens were then brought into contact with a solution of Na2SO4 0.3 M. The efficiency rating of these different types…
