Test-retest repeatability of questionnaire for pain symptoms for school children aged 10–15 years

2019

Abstract Background and aims There is a growing body of evidence, that pain is common at school age. Less is known about the repeatability of pain questionnaires for children. This study aimed to assess the test-retest repeatability of the Finnish version of the electronic pain questionnaire for school-aged children. Methods Primary (n = 79) and lower secondary (n = 127) schoolchildren aged 10–15 years from two schools from the Jyväskylä region of Finland, filled in an electronic questionnaire twice in an interval of 2 weeks. It captured the frequency of pain symptoms with a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire covering nine areas of the body for the last 3 months. The intraclass correlati…

Economic evaluation of a guided and unguided internet-based CBT intervention for major depression: Results from a multicenter, three-armed randomized…

2017

Depression is one of the most common mental disorders and will become one of the leading causes of disability in the world. Internet-based CBT programs for depression have been classified as well established following the American Psychological Association criteria for empirically supported treatments. The aim of this study is to analyze the cost effectiveness at 12-month follow-up of the Internet-based CBT program Smiling is fun with (LITG) and without psychotherapist support (TSG) compared to usual care. The perspective used in our analysis is societal. A sample of 296 depressed patients (mean age of 43.04 years; 76% female; BDI-II mean score = 22.37) from primary care services in four Sp…

Validating rationale of group-level component analysis based on estimating number of sources in EEG through model order selection

2012

This study addresses how to validate the rationale of group component analysis (CA) for blind source separation through estimating the number of sources in each individual EEG dataset via model order selection. Control children, typically reading children with risk for reading disability (RD), and children with RD participated in the experiment. Passive oddball paradigm was used for eliciting mismatch negativity during EEG data collection. Data were cleaned by two digital filters with pass bands of 1-30 Hz and 1-15 Hz and a wavelet filter with the pass band narrower than 1-12 Hz. Three model order selection methods were used to estimate the number of sources in each filtered EEG dataset. Un…

Comparison between whole-body MRI with diffusion-weighted imaging and PET/CT in staging newly diagnosed FDG-avid lymphomas.

2015

Abstract Objectives To compare whole body-MRI (WB-MRI) with diffusion-weighted imaging and FDG-PET/CT in staging newly diagnosed FDG-avid lymphomas. Methods 68 patients (37 males, 31 females; median age 42 years; range 15–86 years) with histologically confirmed lymphoma (37 Classical Hodgkin, 16 Diffuse large B-cell, 10 Follicular, 5 Mantle cell) underwent both MRI and FDG-PET/CT before treatment. Ann Arbor stages obtained with WB-MRI and FDG-PET/CT were compared using Cohen’s k statistics. Moreover WB-MRI and FDG-PET/CT stages were compared with the pathological stages obtained after the diagnostic iter using also bone marrow and available biopsies if clinically indicated. Results The agre…

Measuring elderly people's quality of life through the Beck Hopelessness Scale: a study with a Spanish sample.

2016

Hopelessness is a key element of suicidal intent. It can instill a pessimistic outlook on the future, leading an individual to believe that suicide is the only answer to their problems. Hopelessness operates as a modulating variable between depression and suicidal behavior. The aim of this study was to confirm the factor structure of the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) in a non-clinical sample.Three hundred and sixty-two Spanish individuals, aged over 60, free of cognitive impairment and depressive symptoms, completed the BHS scale. Participants were tested using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), using one-, two- and three-factor models. The one- and two-factor models presented adequate fit …

Cryopreservation of prostate cancer tissue during routine processing of fresh unfixed prostatectomy specimen: demonstration and validation of a new t…

2008

BACKGROUND Most molecular techniques currently require fresh frozen tumor tissue, which in the case of prostatectomy specimen is a challenge to obtain for a variety of intrinsic reasons. Prostate cancers are usually located in the organ periphery and hence meticulous attention has to be paid to the relation between the tumor and the surgical margin. In this article we describe a new technique that allows to obtain fresh frozen tumor material in rather large quantities and without jeopardizing diagnostic accuracy. METHOD An inner triangle, representing roughly 50% of the entire prostate tissue, is removed from native prostatectomy specimen and cryopreserved, leaving the periphery of the orga…

Resection of C6 gliomas in rats with the aid of the waterjet technique

2016

While clinically the safety and efficacy of waterjet resection of brain tumors have been shown, evidence that waterjet dissection improves tumor resection radicality in comparison with conventional techniques is still missing. In the present study, resection radicality and tumor-free long-term survival of both techniques were evaluated in a C6-glioma model.Fifty-thousand C6-glioma cells were stereotactically transplanted in the left frontal lobe of 100 male Sprague-Dawley rats. After MRI-scanning for evaluation of tumor extension, microsurgical tumor resection was performed with conventional techniques (n=50) or with the waterjet dissector at pressures of 6bar (n=50). Twenty-five animals of…

Sympathetic Nervous System Predominance in Intimate Partner Violence Perpetrators After Coping With Acute Stress

2021

It has been suggested that intimate partner violence (IPV) against women perpetrators present emotional dysregulations when dealing with acute stress, which in turn could help to explain their proneness to violence. Emotional regulation can be objectively measured by means of psychophysiological parameters/variables/indicators of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity, such as cardiorespiratory (heart rate [HR], pre-ejection period [PEP] and respiratory sinus arrythmia [RSA]) and electrodermal (skin conductance levels [SCL]) signals. Therefore, this study aims to assess whether IPV perpetrators ( n = 107) present differential psychophysiological and psychological state changes when coping…

A novel LC–MS/MS analytical method for detection of articaine and mepivacaine in blood and its application to a preliminary pharmacokinetic study

2020

Local anaesthetics (LAs) are commonly used in surgery, especially in dentistry. They cause a transitory inhibition of nerve signal due to the blockade of the voltage-gated sodium channels. LAs are administrated alone or with vasoconstriction agents, such as adrenaline. Toxicity of LAs is associated to neurological and cardiovascular alterations. Tachycardia, arrhythmia, tremors, tonic-clonic seizure and respiratory depression (at high doses) are the main symptoms of intoxication by LAs. Lidocaine, articaine and mepivacaine are among the most used anaesthetics. This study aimed to fully validated a new method for the simultaneous detection of articaine and mepivacaine in whole blood. Sample …

A Concept for ICT Assisted Health Promotion in the Occupational Healthcare

2007

Lifestyle related health risks, such as overweight, work stress, and physical inactivity, have become pervasive in most modern societies. These risk factors have a debilitating impact on the well being of citizens and play a major role in the onset of many chronic diseases. As a result, working life is affected due to impaired work ability, decreased productivity, absenteeism, and disability pensions. Lifestyle changes are the key to managing these problems, but they are often difficult to accomplish and maintain. We present a concept for ICT (Information and Communication Technology) assisted health promotion in the occupational healthcare. ICT tools are provided for employees participatin…
