Elastoplastic analysis for active macro-zones via multidomain symmetric Galerkin BEM

In this paper a strategy to perform elastoplastic analysis by using the Symmetric Boundary Element Method (SBEM) for multidomain type problems is shown. This formulation uses a self-stresses equation to evaluate the trial stress in the predictor phase, and to provide the elastoplastic solution in the corrector one. Since the solution is obtained through a return mapping involving simultaneously all the plastically active bem-elements, the proposed strategy does not depend on the path of the plastic strain process and it is characterized by computational advantages due the considerable decrease of the plastic iterations number. Wireless body area networks have recently received much attention because of their application to assisted living and remote patient monitoring. For these applications, energy minimisation is a critical issue since, in many cases, batteries cannot be easily replaced or recharged. Reducing energy expenditure by avoiding unnecessary high transmission power and minimising frame retransmissions is therefore crucial. We extend the first-return integration process, introduced in [5] by U.B. Darji and M.J. Evans, and prove that each Lebesgue-improper integrable function f : [a, b] --> R is first-return integrable in this generalized sense to (Li)int_a^b f(t) dt.
Remarks on the first return integral

Some pathological properties of the first-return integrals are explored. In particular it is proved that there exist Riemann improper integrable functions which are first-return recoverable almost everywhere, but not first-return integrable, with respect to each trajectory. It is also proved that the usual convergence theorems fail to be true for the first-return integrals.

About a quarter of a century ago, Carlo Panico and one of the authors of this chapter published a paper on ‘Sraffa, Marshall and the problem of returns’ (EJHET 1994) in which they explored links between Sraffa’s mid-1920s critique of Marshallian economics and the analysis developed some 35 years later in Production of Commodities. Distance Measures for Portfolio Selection

The classical Markowitz approach to the portfolio selection problem (PSP) consists of selecting the portfolio that minimises the return variance for a given level of expected return. By solving the problem for different values of this expected return we obtain the Pareto efficient frontier, which is composed of non-dominated portfolios. The final user has to discriminate amongst these points by resorting to an external criterion in order to decide which portfolio to invest in. We propose to define an external portfolio that corresponds to a desired criterion, and to assess its distance from the Markowitz frontier in market allowing for short-sellings or not.
