The potential cardiovascular (CV) toxicity associated with combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) has been attributed mainly to the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors abacavir and didanosine. However, the other two components of cART--non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) and protease inhibitors (PIs)--may also be implicated, either directly or by influencing the action of the other drugs. ABSTRACT Between 22 and 45% of HIV-positive subjects are likely to report symptoms of depression. Considering this background, a potential pharmacokinetic interaction between the nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor efavirenz (EFV) and two antidepressants, sertraline (SRT) and nortriptyline (NT), was studied. The differentiation antigen NY-BR-1 is a potential target for antibody-based therapies in breast cancer

Antibody-based cancer immunotherapy relies on the identification and characterization of target antigens and the development of potent antibodies recognizing the target. Here we report the expression analysis and molecular characterization of the differentiation antigen NY-BR-1, which we previously identified by using the SEREX (serological analysis of recombinant cDNA expression libraries) method. Corroborating methodologies, including mRNA quantitation and immunoblotting show that NY-BR-1 is strongly expressed in >70% of 129 breast tumors. Cytoglobin is a respiratory protein in connective tissue and neurons, which is up-regulated by hypoxia.

Cytoglobin is a recently discovered vertebrate globin distantly related to myoglobin, and its function is unknown. Here we present the first detailed analysis of the distribution and expression of cytoglobin. Northern and Western blotting experiments show the presence of cytoglobin mRNA and protein in a broad range of tissues. Quantitative PCR demonstrates an up-regulation of cytoglobin mRNA levels in rat heart and liver under hypoxic conditions (22 and 44 h of 9% oxygen). AbstractCadherin 23 is required for normal development of the sensory hair bundle, and recent evidence suggests it is a component of the tip links, filamentous structures thought to gate the hair cells' mechano-electrical transducer channels. Antibodies against unique peptide epitopes were used to study the properties of cadherin 23 and its spatio-temporal expression patterns in developing cochlear hair cells. Differential expression of Cryptosporidium parvum genes encoding sporozoite surface antigens in infected HCT-8 host cells.

Intracellular replication of Cryptosporidium parvum (Apicomplexa) involves the generation of several asexual and sexual forms of the parasite. During the stage conversions, complex mechanisms lead to differential structural and functional properties of the parasite. These require a well tuned gene transcription machinery. For the first time the gene expression of four surface proteins of C. parvum sporozoites, CP15, CP17, P23, and GP900 were analysed in parallel by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction.
