Se ha venido estableciendo que el paso del barroco al neoclasicismo supone un cambio profundo en la estética artística y se presenta muy frecuentemente en nuestro país a través del conjunto más importante de los realizados en ese momento: las pinturas del Palacio Real de Madrid, en las que interviene en un primer momento uno de los teóricos más importantes del neoclasicismo, Antón Rafael Mengs, y las culmina uno de los pintores más representativos de la continuidad del tardobarroco en el XIX, Vicente López.
