The etiology of undernourishment in cancer patients is multifactorial: tumor-related mechanisms (such as obstruction, metabolic abnormalities, and functionality changes) in addition to the influence of anticancer therapies, which can induce or worsen undernutrition. The evident role of undernutrition in cancer treatment outcomes suggests the need of considering nutritional status when evaluating anticancer drugs. This synopsis provides a key, synonymy, lectotypification, habitat descriptions and distributions for the 81 species and six additional infraspecific taxa of Carex known from tropical and southern Africa and Madagascar. Nomenclatural remarks on Carex sect. Sylvaticae (Cyperaceae): C. laxula and related names

Our taxonomic and nomenclatural research reveals that the name ‘Carex laxula Tineo ex Boott’ (section Sylvaticae) has not been validly published. Consequently, the oldest available name for the species is Carex paui Sennen. A lectotype for the valid name Carex sylvatica var. laxula Tineo ex Guss. is here designated.

We report the results of research on the Carex panormitana Guss. (Cyperaceae) population in Sicily, carried out within its locus classicus at the Oreto River (Palermo). The survey led to a morphological, biological and autoecological characterization, to the definition of the current distribution in the site, to an estimate of the number of individuals and to an analysis of its conservation status. The risk status was also assessed and the species was ascribed to the category Critically Endangered (CR), in accordance with the CR B1ab (ii, iii, v) and EN C1 IUCN criteria. Drug Activity Characterization Using One-Class Support Vector Machines with Counterexamples

The problem of detecting chemical activity in drugs from its molecular description constitutes a challenging and hard learning task. The corresponding prediction problem can be tackled either as a binary classification problem (active versus inactive compounds) or as a one class problem. The first option leads usually to better prediction results when measured over small and fixed databases while the second could potentially lead to a much better characterization of the active class which could be more important in more realistic settings. In this paper, a comparison of these two options is presented when support vector models are used as predictors.

The crystal and molecular structures of the ferrimagnetic bimetallic complex salt hexaamminechromium(III) hexachloroferrate(III), [Cr(NH3)6][FeCl6], have been determined from single-crystal, three-dimensional x-ray diffraction counter data. The compound crystallizes as orange coloured crystals in the space groupC2/c of the monoclinic system with Z=4 and has cell dimensionsa=11.325(1) A,b=11.387(1) A,c=11.233(1) A, and β=90.83(1)A. The structure was refined by using segmented block diagonal least-squares techniques to discrepancy indices R and Rw of 0.0233 and 0.0285, respectively. Analytical-numerical methods for investigation of hidden oscillations in nonlinear control systems

The method of harmonic linearization, numerical methods, and the applied bifurcation the- ory together discover new opportunities for analysis of oscillations of control systems. In the present survey analytical-numerical algorithms for hidden oscillation localization are discussed. Examples of hidden attrac- tor localization in Chua's circuit and counterexamples construction to Aizerman's conjecture and Kalman's conjecture are considered.
Measurement of the radiation energy in the radio signal of extensive air showers as a universal estimator of cosmic-ray energy

We measure the energy emitted by extensive air showers in the form of radio emission in the frequency range from 30 to 80 MHz. Exploiting the accurate energy scale of the Pierre Auger Observatory, we obtain a radiation energy of 15.8±0.7(stat)±6.7(syst) MeV for cosmic rays with an energy of 1 EeV arriving perpendicularly to a geomagnetic field of 0.24 G, scaling quadratically with the cosmic-ray energy. A comparison with predictions from state-of-the-art first-principles calculations shows agreement with our measurement.
