Images and Preimages of Null Sets

2013

In this chapter we study conditions that guarantee that our mapping maps sets of measure zero to sets of measure zero. We start with the problem in general Sobolev spaces, after which we establish a better result for mappings of finite distortion. Then we introduce a natural class of counterexamples to statements of this type and finally we give a weak condition under which the preimage of a set of measure zero has measure zero for mappings of finite distortion.

Exploring the cellular uptake of hectorite clay mineral and its drug carrier capabilities.

2022

In the last years, the use of clay minerals for pharmaceutical purposes has increased due to their interesting properties. Hectorite (Ht) is a clay belonging to the smectite group which has attracted attention for applications in biology, tissue engineering and as drug carrier and delivery system. However, the mechanisms involved in Ht cellular uptake and transport into cells, are still unclear. Herein, we used a labeled Ht (Ht/1Cl) to study both the cellular uptake, by confocal laser scanning microscopy, and internalization pathways involved in the cellular uptake, by various endocytosis-inhibiting studies and fluorescence microscopy. These studies highlighted that Ht can penetrate the cel…

Modeling Drug-Induced Anorexia by Molecular Topology

2012

Molecular topology (MT) has demonstrated to be a very good technique for describing molecular structures and to predict physical, chemical, and biological properties of compounds. In this paper, a topological-mathematical model based on MT has been developed for identifying drug compounds showing anorexia as a side effect. An external validation (test set) has been carried out, yielding over an 80% correct classification in the active and inactive compounds. These results reinforce the role of MT as a potential useful tool for predicting drug side effects.

SY09EXPLORING CURRENT AND PROMISING PHARMACOTHERAPIES IN THE TREATMENT OF ALCOHOLISM: CLINICAL AND PRECLINICAL EVIDENCESY09-1COMBINED THERAPIES DO MA…

2015

Naltrexone (NTX), a non-selective opioid receptor, is a licensed drug for treating alcohol use disorders almost from 20 years ago. During this time, more than 50 clinical trials have been conducted to evaluate its effects in patients suffering for alcoholism. Although these studies have confirmed its effectiveness, …

OP0023 Targeted Polymeric Nanoparticles as Diagnostic and Therapeutic Tool for Rheumatoid Arthritis

2016

Background Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic autoimmune disease affecting joints due to the persistent synovial tissue inflammation. RA treatment has dramatically evolved in the last 20 years due to the production of biological Disease Modifying Antirheumatic Drugs (bDMARDs). However, side effects and the high costs of biological drugs are holding back their widespread usage. Moreover, some patients fail to respond to bDMARDs, for all of these reasons, DMARDs remains the main desired strategy for the treatment of RA, and Methotrexate (MTX) is still the “anchor” drug to treat RA. A successful treatment depends also on the early diagnosis, treating patients as soon as possible …

Statistical analysis of a survey about diffusion of binge drinking and drunkorexia among students in Palermo

2018

Youth alcohol consumption is a major global public health concern. Previous reviews have concluded that exposure to alcohol marketing was associated with drinking initiation and higher alcohol consumption among youth. From January to May 2017, a survey has been conducted through administration of questionnaires about the diffusion of Binge Drinking and Drunkorexia among the students of Palermo. Test was administered, during school time, to 2331 students between the ages of 13 and 20. Regarding the analysis of the questionnaires, 97,8% of student declares to have drunk at least once: their first taste of alcoholic drink happens at the age of thirteen/fourteen. They prefer to drink at the dis…

Differentiated Integration and Disintegration in the EU after Brexit : Risks versus Opportunities

2019

Differentiation is becoming an increasingly salient feature of European integration. The multi‐faceted European crisis and the subsequent Brexit vote (paving the way for a ground‐breaking case of differentiated disintegration) have led scholars and practitioners to think about the consequences of differentiated integration. This article draws on five well‐established models of differentiation experienced by countries both inside and outside the Union: the EEA model; the Danish model of (quasi‐)permanent differentiation; the Swedish model of de facto differentiation; the instrumental model; and the British model of differentiated disintegration. It addresses the different risks and opportuni…

Exploring Differentiated Disintegration in a Post-Brexit European Union

2019

In the aftermath of the British referendum to leave the European Union and the European Commission's ‘White Paper on the Future of Europe’, it is not only time to take stock of the existing literature on differentiated integration, but also to rethink the perimeters of disintegration. We argue that phenomena such as Brexit embrace forms of differentiation which trigger the need for conceptualizing differentiated disintegration altogether. This article first sketches the path of the scholarly debate in a chronological way to grasp the breadth of existing literature. Second, it discusses differentiated disintegration as a potentially new area for research. Mapping several scenarios for future…
