Automatic variable selection for exposure-driven propensity score matching with unmeasured confounders.

2020

Multivariable model building for propensity score modeling approaches is challenging. A common propensity score approach is exposure-driven propensity score matching, where the best model selection strategy is still unclear. In particular, the situation may require variable selection, while it is still unclear if variables included in the propensity score should be associated with the exposure and the outcome, with either the exposure or the outcome, with at least the exposure or with at least the outcome. Unmeasured confounders, complex correlation structures, and non-normal covariate distributions further complicate matters. We consider the performance of different modeling strategies in …

Magnetic properties of vanadium(IV)-based extended systems: [(VO)3(μ-PO4)2(2,2′-bpy)(μ-OH2)]*1/3H2O and (VO)2H4P2O9

2013

International audience; The magnetic properties of [(VO)3(μ-PO4)2(2,2′-bpy)(μ-OH2)]1/3H2O (1) and (VO)2H4P2O9 (2), a tubular and a layered vanadium(IV) phosphates containing triply oxido bridged VIV dimers, are analyzed considering the Bleaney-Bowers S = 1/2 dimer model. In compound 1 the presence of an additional VIV connected with the VIV dimers through μ1,2-PO43− bridges is described with a Curie-Weiss type correction. This model reproduces the magnetic properties of compound 1 with g = 1.956, Jdim = −102.1 cm−1, θ = −0.4 cm−1 and Nα = 278 × 10−6 emu mol−1. In compound 2, the presence of a small percentage of paramagnetic impurity has to be considered to account for the divergence of χm …

Superexchange-mediated electronic energy transfer in a model dyad

2010

On the basis of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations coupled to the polarizable continuum model (PCM) and single molecule spectroscopic studies, we provide a detailed investigation of excitation energy transfer within a model bi-chromophoric system where a perylene monoimide (PMI) donor is bridged to a terrylene diimide (TDI) acceptor through a ladder-type pentaphenylene (pPh) spacer. We find that the electronic excitation on the PMI donor significantly extends over the bridge giving rise to a partial charge transfer character and inducing a approximately 3-fold increase in the electronic interaction between the chromophores, which explains the failure of the Först…

Recent Borexino results and prospects for the near future

2015

The Borexino experiment, located in the Gran Sasso National Laboratory, is an organic liquid scintillator detector conceived for the real time spectroscopy of low energy solar neutrinos. The data taking campaign phase I (2007 - 2010) has allowed the first independent measurements of 7Be, 8B and pep fluxes as well as the first measurement of anti-neutrinos from the earth. After a purification of the scintillator, Borexino is now in phase II since 2011. We review here the recent results achieved during 2013, concerning the seasonal modulation in the 7Be signal, the study of cosmogenic backgrounds and the updated measurement of geo-neutrinos. We also review the upcoming measurements from phase…

SOX : short distance neutrino oscillations with Borexino

2014

Abstract The Borexino detector has convincingly shown its outstanding performance in the in the sub-MeV regime through its unprecedented accomplishments in the solar and geo-neutrinos detection, which make it the ideal tool to unambiguously test the long-standing issue of the existence of a sterile neutrino, as suggested by several anomalies: the outputs of the LSND and Miniboone experiments, the results of the source calibration of the two Gallium solar ν experiments, and the recently hinted reactor anomaly. The SOX project will exploit two sources, based on chromium and cerium, which deployed under the experiment will emit two intense beams of ν e (Cr) and ν e ‾ (Ce). Interacting in the a…

Recent Borexino results and perspectives of the SOX measurement

2017

International audience; Borexino is a liquid scintillator detector sited underground in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy). Its physics program, until the end of this year, is focussed on the study of solar neutrinos, in particular from the Beryllium, pp, pep and CNO fusion reactions. Knowing the reaction chains in the sun provides insights towards physics disciplines such as astrophysics (star physics, star formation, etc.), astroparticle and particle physics. Phase II started in 2011 and its aim is to improve the phase I results, in particular the measurements of the neutrino fluxes from the pep and CNO processes. By the end of this year, data taking from the sun will be over…

Frankfurtian Reflections: A Critical Discussion of Robert Lockie’s “Three Recent Frankfurt Cases”

2016

In a recent article, Robert Lockie brings about a critical examination of three Frankfurtstyle cases designed by David Widerker and Derk Pereboom. His conclusion is that these cases do not refute either the Principle of Alternative Possibilities (PAP) or some cognate leeway principle for moral responsibility. Though I take the conclusion to be true, I contend that Lockie's arguments do not succeed in showing it. I concentrate on Pereboom's Tax Evasion 2 . After presenting Pereboom's example and analyzing its structure, I distinguish two strategies of Lockie's to defend PAP against it, which I call 'No True Alternative Decision' (NTAD) and 'No Responsibility' (NR), respectively. According to…

New Alliances in Post-Brexit Europe: Does the New Hanseatic League Revive Nordic Political Cooperation?

2020

As Brexit removes the Nordic countries’ most powerful ally from the EU, what does this imply for their approach to European affairs? The literature on small states within the EU suggests that they can counterbalance limited bargaining capacities by entering two types of alliances: strategic partnerships with bigger member states and institutionalised cooperation on a regional basis. Against this backdrop we ask whether, by significantly raising the costs of non-cooperation for Nordic governments, the Brexit referendum has triggered a revival of Nordic political cooperation. We scrutinise this conjecture by analysing Nordic strategies of coalition-building on EU financial and budgetary polic…

The Case of “EMU-Outsiders”: Economic and Political Considerations

2016

Our paper discusses the option of three EU countries – United Kingdom, Sweden and Denmark – of not joining the EMU and analyses whether besides their subjective option of staying out of the EMU there is also an economic reason behind this decision, based on existing literature in the field. The three “EMU-outsiders” are different in terms of economic power, financial market attributes, monetary policy rules employed and political decisions. In each case, the choice to remain outside EMU was based on economic reasons, as well as political and sometimes nationalist arguments. Of the three countries under scrutiny, Denmark is by far the one which has the best prospects of joining EMU, given it…

Unisexual flowers as a robust synapomorphy in Cariceae (Cyperaceae)? Evidence for bisexual flowers in Schoenoxiphium

2012

Abstract Cariceae, the largest tribe within Cyperaceae, comprises about 2000 species in five genera. Cariceae is usually considered to be distinct from other Cyperaceae by the presence of exclusively unisexual flowers and by the arrangement of the pistillate flowers in single-flowered spikelets that are enclosed by the flask-like spikelet prophyll (utricle or perigynium). The nature of several morphological features of the Cariceae inflorescence remains controversial. The staminate reproductive units, as well as earlier reported bisexual reproductive units in Schoenoxiphium have been considered to be reduced partial inflorescences, or flowers. Aims of this study are to test both interpretat…
