Vortex shape in unbaffled stirred vessels: experimental study via digital image analysis
2011
There is a growing interest in using unbaffled stirred tanks for addressing certain processing needs. In this work, digital image analysis coupled with a suitable shadowgraphy-based technique is used to investigate the shape of the free-surface vortex that forms in uncovered unbaffled stirred tanks. The technique is based on back-lighting the vessel and suitably averaging vortex shape over time. Impeller clearance from vessel bottom and tank filling level are varied to investigate their influence on vortex shape. A correlation is finally proposed to fully describe vortex shape also when the vortex encompasses the impeller.
Height of water pouring effects on infiltration runs carried out in an initially wet sandy-loam soil
2017
Ring infiltration methods are widely used for field soil hydraulic characterization. Establishing factors affecting these methods is necessary to interpret the collected data. The height from which water is poured on the soil surface is known to influence infiltration in a sandy-loam soil, since low (L, height of water pouring 0.03 m) runs yielded higher infiltration rates than high (H, 1.5 m) runs in previous investigations. The impact of water pouring height on infiltration rates seems to vary with the antecedent soil water content, θi. In this investigation, height effects on infiltration were tested for an initially very wet sandy-loam soil. Two-stage infiltration runs differing by the…
EOF-Library: Open-source Elmer FEM and OpenFOAM coupler for electromagnetics and fluid dynamics
2019
EOF-Library is a software that couples Elmer and OpenFOAM simulation packages. It enables efficient internal field interpolation and communication between the finite element and the finite volume frameworks. The coupling of the two packages is based on the Message Passing Interface, which results in low latency, high data bandwidth and parallel scalability. Potential applications are magnetohydrodynamics, convective cooling of electrical devices, industrial plasma physics and microwave heating. In this work we introduce the software and perform interpolation accuracy and parallel scaling tests by sending a known scalar distribution between the two codes. Keywords: Elmer, FEM, OpenFOAM, FVM,…
Morphodynamics of river bed variation with variable bedload step length
2013
Abstract. Here we consider the 1-D morphodynamics of an erodible bed subject to bedload transport. Fluvial bed elevation variation is typically modeled by the Exner equation, which, in its classical form, expresses mass conservation in terms of the divergence of the bedload sediment flux. An entrainment form of the Exner equation can be written as an alternative description of the same bedload processes, by introducing the notions of an entrainment rate into bedload and of a particle step length, and assuming a certain probability distribution for the step length. This entrainment form implies some degree of nonlocality, which is absent from the standard flux form, so that these two express…
Audience involvement in creative media for development: Making sense of the semiotic interface
2017
This article explores the role that semiotic communication plays in the generation of narrative affect. It also draws on Suruchi Sood’s concept of audience involvement as being capable of increasing self-efficacy and collective-efficacy, both of which are crucial to behaviour change. It therefore, demonstrates how semiotic tropes are used in creative media narratives to elicit affect and in turn generate authentic audience involvement with the subjects of those narratives, a process which eventually has positive consequences for behaviour change communication. Hence, these narratives fueled by semiotics, become the threshing floor where potential audiences are drawn into pro-social discours…
A simple methodology for comparing cost-benefit of traditional, green and cool roofs
2019
Energy policy makers, architects and researchers, when designing new buildings or rehabilitating the existing ones, are engaged in the attempt of limiting the energy needs for climatization (NZEB buildings) and the environmental pressure exerted by buildings (EU Climate Action). The pursuit of this demanding assignment calls for innovative solutions in conceiving the building envelope and its energy systems. Recently, among the most effective tools for improving the energy and environmental performances of buildings, the technical interventions regarding the roofs are gaining a rising attention. Indeed, covers of buildings are responsible of a relevant part of their energy losses and, on th…
