Redemption and home in the african american city upon a hill: hannah crafts’s the bondwoman’s narrative.
2019
The Bondwoman’s Narrative (1857) is a novel in which the black female slave Hannah Crafts aims at the remodeling of her society and to gain self–assertion through a deeply Christian commitment and a total and honest respect to the values it impinges drawing broadly on the Bible and reshaping biblical imagery to convey her message and to submit her subjectivity and her Americanness. By using the national continuum of jeremiad rhetoric and her attachment to the values of the Christian creed, the novel partakes and yet takes a different direction from slave narratives by cagily forerunning Du Bois’s praised theory of the double consciousness. In so doing, it positions its protagonist as the fi…

The popularization of plate tectonics: presenting the concepts of dynamics and time
1996
There have been many attempts to describe and represent the theory of plate tectonics to laypeople. In the context of a study conducted at the request of a museum, we have tried to determine how the concepts of both geological time and the movements of the plates have been reformulated. After having systematically studied in detail publications aimed at more or less educated readers, we have selected a corpus of twelve articles from nine different magazines or journals. Among the different means of expression used by the popularizers, rhetorical figures constitute a significant resource. Procedures based on analogy (metaphor, comparison, analogical reasoning) were brought together in a sing…

Le prove testimoniali nell’Apologia di Apuleio
2015
In Apuleius’ Apologia the witnesses play a relevant role and indeed, in some cases, they are crucial for the defensive speech. This survey explores in detail the universe of the characters and the evidences in the Apuleian oration. Testes are often presented in spectacular form: from Crassus’ comic tones to the scenic personification of verba suppressa from Pudentilla’s letter. In Apuleius’ words, you can also see a strong continuity with the rhetorical treatises and the previous oratorical tradition: undeniably there is a proximity between some choices in the Apologia and similar solutions in Cicero, as well and it is also possible, in particular, to read some sections of the Apuleian text…

Coinage and images of the imperial family: local identity and Roman rule
2013
In his speech “About harmony between the cities”, Publius Aelius Aristides, the famous orator of the mid-2nd c. A.D., admonishes the three most eminent cities of Asia — Pergamum, Ephesus and Smyrna — to put an end to their rivalries. He regards as useless their envy and struggle to be first among the cities in the province of Asia. He cautions against such rivalries, which could lead to an unwanted intervention by Roman authorities. He continues (Or. 23 [Keil = 42 Dindorf] 62): Is there a child or an old man so much out of mind that he would ignore that this is our present situation and that this is thank heaven the ruling law: one city, the first and greatest, has the whole world under one…
