ADDITIVITY FROM MULTIPLE PRIMES IN IDENTIFYING BACKWARD WRITTEN WORDS
1988
Activational theories of memory assume that activation from several sources adds up to an intersecting node. We tested this idea in one experiment where we kept constant the number of primes presented and we manipulated the number of different primes related to the target, the number of presentations of the same prime, or the same target, presented as a prime. We used a task in which the target was always a word, which appeared written backward and had to be identified. We found a strong effect of target repetition and diminished priming in the condition in which the target was repeated. We obtained additivity (greater activation) mainly in the condition in which we presented several diffe…
Effect of Prime and Target Repetition on Lexical Decision Time
1992
On a prime-target lexical decision task we manipulated the relatedness between prime and target (semantically related or unrelated), the number of repetitions (from 1 to 5), the type of the repeated stimulus (only the prime, only the target, or both), and the stimulus onset asynchrony (within a range of automatic activation from 60 to 400 msec.) to find whether semantic and repetition priming are additive (or interact), and whether there is episodic priming in an automatic, nonconscious way. Analysis showed repetition and semantic priming were additive rather than interactive. No episodic automatic priming was found. Results are discussed in terms of the predictions made from the main theo…
Spirals of Speaking Out? Effects of the “Suppressed Voice Rhetoric” on Audiences’ Willingness to Express Their Opinion
2020
A defining feature of counterpublics is to claim that their views are deliberately excluded from the mainstream public sphere. This rhetorical strategy – which we theorize as “suppressed voice rhet...
Oppilaiden kaikupuheen tehtävät kielellisesti epäsymmetrisissä luokkahuonekeskusteluissa

Repeating the words of the conversational partners gives the persons with restricted communicative abilities a possibility for taking an active part in and exerting some control in the conversational interaction. Earlier research has approached the repeats with two different viewpoints: they have been considered either as problematic and meaningless echolalia, or as motivated communication meaningful for speakers themselves. This paper examines the functions for which students with special needs use repetition in their interaction with teachers and the ways in which teachers treat these echolalic responses in classroom talk. The research data consists of the video-recordings of lessons in o…
Dalla parte dell'ascoltatore. Un approccio pragma-retorico alla comprensione
2019

Smart city. Four approaches to the concept of understanding
2020
The paper analyzes the rhetoric of the smart city (SC) concept in order to recognize, categorize, and describe different perspectives of understanding the notion. Four approaches to the SC concept were isolated: three affirmative, and one rejecting. The approaches present a different understanding of the SC and indicate different elements creating urban ‘smartness.’ Despite differences, there is one common goal in every affirmative approach: to improve the quality of urban life. It is achieved through activities covering five dimensions distinguished within affirmative approaches. Together they can serve, i.e.,as a framework for SC case study analyses.
On the rhetoric and relevance of IS research paradigms: a conceptual framework and some propositions
2003
This paper discusses the relevance of IS research with respect to the rhetoric associated with three IS research paradigms in use - positivism, constructivism/interpretivism and critical research. The discussion is framed in terms of the following dimensions: ontological, epistemological and methodological assumptions, relationship between theory and practice, and the role of the researcher in the research process. Based on this discussion, the authors propose a theoretical framework to study the relationship of the espoused assumptions of a researcher's perspective with the degree of relevance of their knowledge claims to various stakeholders. In conclusion, some key propositions are eluci…
How Populist Was David Cameron?
2016
The ‘rhetorical populism’ of the former prime minister's big society agenda may have waxed and waned, says Agnes Alexandre-Collier. But Cameron was an innovator of party management and governing practices whose focus on connecting with ‘the people’ transformed his party – but also supplied the means of his own downfall.
The Notion of Eikos Within Conspiracy Theories. A Rhetorical Analysis
2022
Based on the analysis of one specific conspiracy theory, this paper will explore, from the rhetorical framework, the antic concept of likelihood [eikos]. Indeed, we believe that the rhetorical approach could allow us, on a larger scale, to (re)question, in the light of contemporary challenges, the complex relationship we have with the notions of rationality and truth. More precisely, to proceed with the rhetorical analysis, we will mobilise two types of logical reasoning: first, “the logic of the pot” argument from pragmatic logic and second, the logic of amplification and poetization of discourse. This will allow us to draw some comparisons between conspiracist speeches and, respectively, …
