Unifying or Polarizing? Short-Term Effects and Postdebate Consequences of Different Rhetorical Strategies in Televised Debates

Despite a large body of research, little is known about the ways in which viewers react to different kinds of statements during televised debates nor about the degree to which these short-term reactions influence postdebate opinions. Taking the second televised debate in the 2002 German national election as an example, we address both of these questions. We identify the most unifying and polarizing statements and connect immediate reactions during the debate to postdebate verdicts on an individual level of analysis. Abstract Election campaigns are institutionalized conflicts which are carried out in and through the mass media. Success and defeat in these conflicts depend upon the communication strategies of the parties and on the reactions of the journalists. In the election campaign of 1982–1983, the campaign manager of the Christian Democrats succeeded in altering the conflict over the new rental law into a conflict over the credibility of the SPD‐opposition. Thus, he created a counterpart to the criticism directed against the federal government. Reconsidering authorship in the Ciceronian corpus through computational authorship attribution

In recent years, methods of computational authorship attribution have offered promising results for the reattribution of classical texts. We use and further develop these methods to verify the authorship of several texts belonging or related to the Ciceronian corpus: Rhetorica ad C. Herennium, De inventione, De optimo genere oratorum, and Commentariolum petitionis. We use two classifiers, Support Vector Machine and Convolutional Neural Network, of which the latter is more accurate except in regard to certain aspects of vocabulary. Kontekstem badań było to, że niektórzy komentatorzy proponują różne struktury badanego tekstu. Celem badań stało się opracowanie struktury, którą zamieścił w tekście starożytny autor natchniony. Do tego posłużyła metoda retoryki hebrajskiej, którą opracował Roland Meynet. Udało się odkryć strukturę badanego tekstu. Jest to konstrukcja paralelna o schemacie: A (w. 1a) – B (w. 4ab) – C (w. 6b) – C’ (w. 9b) – B’ (w. 11abc) – A’ (w. 14a). Abstract Since its coinage in the nineteenth century, the concept of Carolingian renaissance has been primarily based on the revival of classical texts promoted by Charlemagne and his successors. Among the positive consequences of Carolingian classicism is the careful—if discreet—preservation of the text of Lucretius’s De Rerum Natura, which survives in three valuable ninth-century manuscripts. This article considers the epistemology of Classical rhetoric and Hippocratic medicine, focusing on two key terms: semeion and tekmerion. Through an analysis of the specific case of ancient Greek medicine and rhetoric, we hope to bring out the conjectural and fallible nature of human knowledge. The paper focuses on the epistemological and methodological affinity between these two ancient technai, and considers the medical uses of semeion and tekmerion in the light of their meaning in the rhetorical sphere. Resum: El present treball analitza comparativament els principals tòpics retòrics presents als pròlegs de textos hagiogràfics bizantins i catalans. El punt de partença és la consolidació del gènere hagiogràfic com a tal en la literatura grega tardo-antiga i d’època bizantina i la seua influència sobre el desenvolupament de l’hagiografia en Occident, primer en llatí i després en les llengües romàniques a partir de l’Edat Mitjana. En aquest sentit, podrem observar l’ús d’un mateix repertori de caràcter retòric per presentar i embellir el text i analitzarem l’explicació d’aquest fenomen i les perspectives d’estudi a explorar.
