Acousto-optic Modulators Based on Flexural Acoustic Waves and its Application to Mode-locked Fiber Lasers

2014

Acousto-optic modulators based on flexural acoustic waves and its application to implement active mode-locking in fiber lasers is reported. Optical pulses as short as 25 ps temporal width were obtained at 2.46 MHz repetition rate.

A multidimensional critical factorization theorem

2005

AbstractThe Critical Factorization Theorem is one of the principal results in combinatorics on words. It relates local periodicities of a word to its global periodicity. In this paper we give a multidimensional extension of it. More precisely, we give a new proof of the Critical Factorization Theorem, but in a weak form, where the weakness is due to the fact that we loose the tightness of the local repetition order. In exchange, we gain the possibility of extending our proof to the multidimensional case. Indeed, this new proof makes use of the Theorem of Fine and Wilf, that has several classical generalizations to the multidimensional case.

High-repetition-rate source delivering optical pulse trains with a controllable level of amplitude and temporal jitters

2020

International audience; We theoretically propose and numerically validate an all-optical scheme to generate optical pulse trains with varying peak-powers and durations. A shaping of the spectral phase thanks to discrete /2 phase shifts enables an efficient phase-to-intensity conversion of a temporal phase modulation based on a two-tone sinusoidal beating. Experiments carried out at telecommunication wavelengths and at a repetition rate of 10 GHz confirm the ability of our approach to efficiently generate a train made of pulses with properties that vary from pulse-to-pulse. The levels of jitters can be accurately controlled.

All-fibered high-quality low duty-cycle picosecond high repetition rate pulse sources

2007

In this work, we demonstrate all-fibered 20-GHz and 40-GHz picosecond pulse sources with duty cycles as low as 1/14. The pulse train is achieved via the high-quality compression of an initial sinusoidal beating through four segments of optical fibers. We investigate the limits of the scalability to higher repetition rates.

Talking Politics: The Influence of Historical and Cultural Transformations on Polish Political Rhetoric

2021

This qualitative study aims to explore the characteristics of Polish political rhetoric since 2004 when Poland’s political system stabilized after the transformation from a communist to a democratic state. It analyzes a selection of celebratory presidential speeches, PMs’ inaugurals and parliamentary debates, and populist party propagandas targeted at domestic audiences. It looks at content, but mainly at style and rhetorical devices to identify reflections of Poland’s turbulent history (resistance rhetoric), economic instability (crisis rhetoric), national heritage (traditionalism and religiosity), and recent social changes (mediatization). One significant dimension investigated here is th…

Saying the Saffu and Beating the Law: The Changing Role of Sacred Sites in the Oromo Politico-Juridical System

2013

This chapter presents a semiotic analysis of the role of sacred sites and other physical features and objects in key political/religious rituals of the Oromo people living in the Horn of Africa. Theoretically, it builds on Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction of the concept of ‘archive’ as an intersection of the topological and the nomological of the place and the law. For Derrida, the place of the archive is not a locatable place, but a topos, the marking of a discourse. In contrast to the European tradition based primarily on archives inscribed in writing and summarised in a codified law, for the traditional Oromo society, laws were part of the oral tradition – a mixture of religion, law and …

Effects of short inter-repetition rest periods on power output losses during the half squat exercise

2016

BACKGROUND: Cluster training is being increasingly used to develop muscular power. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of short inter-repetition rest (IRR) periods on the capacity to maintain maximal levels of power output. METHODS:In afirst session, 16 active-duty soldiers performed a progressive loading test toestablish the load linked tomaximal power (optimal load, OL), and the half squat 1-repetition maximum. In Session 2, six individual sets of repetitions performed to failure (or a maximum of 20 repetitions) were conducted using the loads OL, low (LL, 15% below OL), and high (HL, 15% above OL) as quickly as possible. For each load, participants performed one set without rest between r…

Effects of a French remedial program on pupils’ educational outcomes

2018

International audience; Few studies have examined the French “Networks for Specialized Assistance to Pupils in Difficulty” (Rased). In this article, we evaluate the impact of receiving Rased services in the first year of primary schooling on academic success. Using data from a national panel study, we find inconsistency in student selection within Rased. Using matching methods, our results reveal that pupils who benefited from the program school have a higher probability of grade repetition and obtain significantly lower scores on the third grade national assessment, particularly in mathematics, compared to pupils with similar characteristics who did not take part in the program. This impac…

The spontaneous use of memory aids at different educational levels

1996

Three groups of students in different educational levels: 8th–9th grade students (average age 15); 10th–11th grade students (average age 16); and college students (average age 21), completed a metamemory questionnaire on the use of external, general, and formal memory aids in everyday life and study situations. Short-term repetition, mental rehearsing, and summary elaboration were the most frequent aids. The least frequently used were those that require a special training to be used effectively (e.g. Digit-letters and method of loci). There were differences in the use of general memory aids due to education level, but not in the case of external and formal memory aids. Results showed also t…
