Political Correctness and Academic Principles: A Reply to Simpson

1997

The author discusses Christopher Simpson's (1996) article, ‘Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann's ‘Spiral of Silence’ and the Historical Context of Communication Theory.’ He questions the relevance of biographical data for the evaluation of scientific theories and methods, and analyzes the rhetorical structure of Simpson's arguments. He concludes that Simpson's claims about the influence of Noelle's biography on her scholarly work are not grounded in evidence.

Medical Discourse and Academic Genres

2006

This article is designed to give a detailed description of medical English from a genre analysis perspective. First, the relevance of medical communication and the significance of genre to account for communicative events in this discipline are presented. Different medical genres are then described in detail in terms of their language use and macrostructural patterns. The rhetorical structure of review articles, research articles, and case reports, among the written medical genres, is analyzed.

Expressing digression linguistically: Do digressive markers exist?

2009

Abstract This paper analyzes the relationship between digressions and topic shifts in the light of the Spanish marker por cierto . Against the standard explanation, which takes digression as a well-established linguistic operation, digression is regarded as a rhetorical operation, underspecified at the linguistic level. The most conspicuous trace of digression, the so-called digressive markers , cannot be distinguished from topic shifters on the basis of the instruction provided by the marker alone. Thus, both types of markers should be grouped together as a single class, that of “new relevant information markers” (NRIMs). The perceived differences between topic shifters and digressive mark…

Affective Rhetoric and ‘Sticky Concepts’ in European Education Policy Documents

2020

Concepts carry not only meanings but also affective associations and cultural connotations. In this chapter, we elaborate on the affective dimensions of European education policy documents. Many of the conceptual densities discussed in this book form affective peaks or rhetorical pinnacles that transmit the idea of intercultural dialogue—and the values attached to it—more effectively than the definitions of the concept alone are able to do. Drawing on theories of affect, we trace the affective transmission of ideals and values in the education policy documents and examine what kind of affects and affective connotations ‘stick’ to the concept of intercultural dialogue. We suggest affective r…

The Politics of Debate in the Union Societies

2016

The chapter discusses the disputes over procedure in the private meetings of the Union Societies and how they can be interpreted politically. Haapala points out that some of the rules were adopted from the House of Commons, although the Unions did not follow the parliamentary model in all respects. As well as noting that the politics of debate in the Unions was largely conducted through rule interpretation and challenging the decisions of the president, the chapter also draws attention to the role of the standing committees, the vast powers of Union presidents and the rhetorical strategies the members used in the debates. The chapter ends with a typology of politicisation of the rules in th…

The Politics of Agenda in the Union Debates

2016

The chapter consists of a discussion of the politicisation of the agenda in the Oxford and Cambridge Unions’ public debates roughly between the reform acts in 1832 and 1867. As well as relating the setting of political agenda to the classical rhetorical tradition of inventio, Haapala contrasts the Union practices to the parliamentary setting of debating on both sides of an issue. The chapter also proposes that the Union public debates showed the use of certain rhetorical commonplaces, or topoi, which are named as principle, expediency, character and vote of confidence. Finally, Haapala offers a typology of political agenda setting in the Unions.

Abstract nouns as metadiscursive shells in academic discourse

2018

Visual Arguments in Film

2008

Parliamentary sources in the comparative study of conceptual history: methodological aspects and illustrations of a research proposal

2009

SUMMARY This article proposes that historians and political theorists should exploit parliamentary sources to move from the writing of national histories to the comparative study of the conceptual history of European political cultures. Complementing the German lexicographical approach to conceptual history, the authors argue that parliamentary debates in several European countries provide more reliable sources for the past use of the language of politics. They emphasize the possibilities for the study of political history and the rhetoric of parliamentary institutions offered by the use of parliamentary debates side by side with the study of archival sources and published literature. Rheto…
