There is evidence in animal populations that loading and exercise can positively impact the intervertebral disc (IVD). However, there is a paucity of information in humans. We examined the lumbar IVDs in 308 young athletes across six sporting groups (baseball, swimming, basketball, kendo, soccer, and running; mean age 19 years) and 71 nonathletic controls. IVD status was quantified via the ratio of IVD to vertebral body height (IVD hypertrophy) and ratio of signal intensity in the nucleus to that in the annulus signal (IVD nucleus hydration) on sagittal T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Surgical treatment of fragility sacrum fractures with percutaneous sacroiliac (SI) screw fixation is associated with high failure rates. Turn-out is detected in up to 20% of the patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate a new screw-in-screw implant prototype for fragility sacrum fracture fixation. In rheumatology the so-called "seronegative spondarthritis" is a group of diseases characterized by the presence of HLA-B 27. This group includes the typical ankylosing spondylitis as well as atypical spondylopathies such as those occurring in psoriasis, Reiter's disease and chronic inflammatory enteropathies, which attack mainly the spine and secondarily the peripheral joints. In some severe cases, non-infectious, sterile spondylodiscitis was observed. These can lead to instability and fracture, followed by pseudarthrosis of the involved segment of the spine. Objective To assess the persistence of bacterial antigens in peripheral blood cells from patients with Yersinia enterocolitica O:3-triggered reactive arthritis (ReA). Methods Peripheral blood samples were obtained from 20 patients with Y enterocolitica O:3 infection (11 with ReA and 9 without). These samples were studied by immunochemical techniques for the presence of Yersinia antigens at the beginning of infection and up to 4 years thereafter.
