Multidisciplinary Approaches to Study Ancient Cities in a Seismic Region
2022
The paper focuses on the strong connections between natural resources, environment, and urban development in the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine city of Hierapolis of Phrygia (Pamukkale, Turkey). The ancient city was founded on a travertine terrace crossed by an active fault, responsible for impressive geothermal phenomena, i.e., flowing of thermal water, emission of gases, and frequent earthquakes, while the surrounding territory offered various stone qualities (travertine, alabaster, marbles, etc.). These environmental features affected the cultural identity of Hierapolis and its urban layout, conditioning also the construction techniques and the monumentalization of the city. In recent…
2022
The reconstruction of ecclesiastical geography of Christian origins constitutes one of the most current fields of study of Postclassical Archeology in Europe. The contribution aims to update current knowledge on the state of research in Sicily in the light of the new data acquired from archeology.
The contribution concerns the architectural study of the church through a methodological path that is part of the architectural survey and from the stratigraphic reading of the elevated to the hypothesis of virtual reconstruction of the building
Halloysite nanotubes/pluronic nanocomposites for waterlogged archeological wood: thermal stability and X-ray microtomography
2020
Filling a polymer with halloysite nanotubes is considered a promising strategy to generate nanocomposites with tailored physicochemical properties. We have focused our attention on pluronic block copolymer/halloysite nanocomposites prepared by melt blending. The effect of composition on thermal stability and polymer crystallinity was investigated by thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. Electron microscopy was used to monitor the nanoparticle distribution in the polymeric matrix. The pluronic thermal stability is reduced by the clay nanoparticles. Concerning the polymer crystallinity, it is slightly decreased even if the melting temperature is lowered by halloysite. Furthe…
I CASTELLI DELLE RIVOLTE. DALLA PIANA DI PARTINICO ALLA VALLE DELLO JATO (PALERMO) SULLE TRACCE DEGLI ULTIMI MUSULMANI IN SICILIA OCCIDENTALE
2017
Following the excavations of the "Castellazzo" fortress of Jato, it became necessary to revise the archaeological materials coming from excavation and reconnaissance in all those fortified sites that welcomed the Muslim population during the revolts between the last Norman and Swabian ages. Attention was thus focused on at least two phases in the construction of such fortresses, often simple towers rather than real castles, corresponding to the beginning of the Norman domination and the Federician period.
IL RESTAURO VIRTUALE IN ARCHEOLOGIA
2012
2012
In the winter of 2001-2002, an emergency excavation uncovered another suburban sanctuary in the periphery of ancient Gela (Piazza Gorizia). During the excavations remains of a sacellum and a votive depot datable at the end of 5th century BC were found.
Experiments and results on obsidian tools: the case study of Le Rocche (Roccapalumba, Pa, Sicily) through microwear analysis.
2003
The results of the experimental activity related to the functional analysis of obsidian tools, coming from the Neolithic site of "Le Rocche" (Roccapalumba, Palermo), are discussed here.
