Jurassic architectural model of the southern Tethys Palaeomargin as deduced from Cenozoic geodynamic evolution of the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco.
2006
40 pages; International audience
Deep-rooted “thick skinned” model for the High Atlas Mountains (Morocco). Implications for the structural inheritance of the southern Tethys passive …
2006
A re-interpretation of the deep structure of the High Atlas is presented through integration of geophysical and geological data, highlighting the architectural significance of the southern Tethys palaeomargin. Previous crustal models suggest the occurrence of a flat intra-crustal detachment at a depth of 20 km, a zone where surface thrusts merge and below which the lower High Atlas crust appears continuous. However, within this study seismic refraction data, electrical resistivity surveys and gravity modelling all appear to detect a jump in crustal thickness between the High Atlas and the northern plains. We interpret these data as penetration by thrusts within the ‘‘South-Atlasic fault’’…
Sinemurian to lowermost Toarcian ammonites of the Brescian Prealps (Southern Alps, Italy): preliminary biostratigraphical framework and correlations.
2009
10 pages; International audience; A set of 28 ammonite biohorizons or faunal assemblages is proposed for the Sinemurian, the Pliensbachian and the lowermost Toarcian of the Brescian Prealps, in part based on the published data of the authors of this contribution and partly on new results, derived both from recent field investigations and from the study of the historical collection of Lower Jurassic ammonites preserved in the Museum of Natural Sciences of Brescia (Northern Italy). The biohorizons are present in the Liassic carbonate succession of the Brescian Prealps, cropping out between the eastern surroundings of Brescia (Botticino), to the east, and Lake Iseo, to the west. Since the Hett…
Tectono-stratigraphic modelling of the North Sicily continental margin (southern Tyrrhenian Sea).
2004
A two-dimensional numerical modelling that simulate the kinematic and thermal response of the lithosphere to thinning was used for the quantitative reconstruction of the late Neogene to Recent times tectonic and stratigraphic evolution of the North Sicily continental margin (southern Tyrrhenian Sea). The numerical study of the evolution of the North Sicily margin builds on the crustal image and kinematic interpretation of the margin obtained by Pepe et al. [Tectonics 19 (2000) 241] on the basis of seismic data and gravity modelling. Tectonic modeling indicate that different segments of the margin were undergoing different vertical movements, which are mainly expression of the rifting and th…
Nonequilibrium electron spin relaxation in n-type doped GaAs sample
2019
Non-equilibrium electron spin relaxation in a n-type doped GaAs bulk semiconductor is investigated. We use a semiclassical Monte Carlo approach by considering multivalley spin dynamics of drifting electrons. Spin relaxation is considered through the D'yakonov-Perel mechanism, which is the dominant process in III-V semiconductors. An analytical expression for the inhomogeneous broadening of spin precession vector is derived by taking into account the effect of the electric field and the doping density. The inclusion of electron-electron scattering has the effect of increasing both the spin lifetime and the depolarization length. In particular, we find a non-monotonic trend with the maximum o…
Phanerozoic geological evolution of Northern and Central Africa: An overview.
2005
61 pages; International audience; The principal paleogeographic characteristics of North and Central Africa during the Paleozoic were the permanency of large exposed lands over central Africa, surrounded by northerly and northwesterly dipping pediplanes episodically flooded by epicontinental seas related to the Paleotethys Ocean. The intra-continental Congo–Zaire Basin was also a long-lived feature, as well as the Somali Basin from Late Carboniferous times, in conjunction with the development of the Karoo basins of southern Africa. This configuration, in combination with eustatic sea-level fluctuations, had a strong influence on facies distributions. Significant transgressions occurred duri…
Crossing Borders. Concepts and Practices for a New Planetary Dimension
2020
The essay takes into account some categories and practices of colonial relations by considering both domination and subjectification processes and handles the concept of border and the complex dynamics of crossing, mobility, diaspora, and hybridization. The critical analysis of the hierarchical order of the world highlights the ways in which the relations between non-homogeneous elements produce conflict and assimilation practices, but also contaminations and inclusion. By assuming the "colonial" as a precarious concept, the essay stresses the discursive aspects of dominion but also the government, counter-conducts, and resistances, without forecloses the persistence of the epistemological …
Segmentation and differential post-rift uplift at the Angola margin as recorded by the transform-rifted Benguela and oblique-to-orthogonal-rifted Kwa…
2010
29 pages; International audience; We analyse tectonic and sedimentary field and subsurface data for the Angola onshore margin together with free-air gravity anomaly data for the offshore margin. This enables us to characterize the mode of synrift tectonism inherited from the Precambrian and its impact on the segmentation of the Angola margin. We illustrate that segmentation by the progressive transition from the Benguela transform-rifted margin segment to the oblique-rifted South Kwanza and orthogonal-rifted North Kwanza margin segments. The spatial variation in the intensity of post-rift uplift is demonstrated by the study of a set of geomorphic markers detected in the post-rift succession…
Neocomian to early Aptian syn-rift evolution of the normal to oblique-rifted North Gabon Margin (Interior and N'Komi Basins).
2009
18 pages; International audience; The North Gabon coastal rift basins consist of a set of 130–150 long-segment asymmetrically tilted half grabens (Interior Basin) and 000–020 short-segment en échelon half grabens (N'Komi Basin) separated by 040–060 major transverse faults. Tectono-sedimentary analysis of field and subsurface data reveals the control exerted by extensional tectonism over continental sedimentation. During Berriasian to early Barremian times, uniform uniaxial 040–060 extension was responsible for the stretching of the brittle upper crust over a 100-km wide domain. During late Barremian–early Aptian times, the main locus of extension stepped westward resulting in severe end-rif…
