Development of the Jyväskylä microbeam facility

2012

Abstract A new microbeam facility is being constructed at the 1.7 MV Pelletron Accelerator in Jyvaskyla. The facility is designed for easy upgrading and incorporates a number of innovative features. Initially, it is based on a Heidelberg doublet with a design capability of a 3 × 5 μm beamspot at PIXE intensities and later upgraded to nanobeam performance. A thermal-expansion compensated rigid frame mounted on a mechanically isolated floor section is used to support the ion optical components. A compact-post focusing electrostatic deflector is used for high linearity beam scanning. This together with a novel time-stamped data collection (TDC) allows dynamic effects in IBIC, fluorescence blea…

In-flight separation with gas-filled systems

1997

Abstract The application of gas-filled recoil separators in the study of fusion evaporation products from heavy ion induced reactions will be discussed. Practical methods for estimating the average magnetic rigidity of fusion products and target-like nuclei will be presented. Examples will be given of typical background intensities observed in studies of heavy elements. The merits of gas-filled devices in comparison with other in-flight separators will be discussed. Selected recent applications in the fields of heavy element research and in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy will be presented, and finally, some future projects will be discussed.

Ion-optical layout of a powerful next-generation pre-separator for in-flight separation of relativistic rare isotopes

2006

Abstract Rare isotope beams can be efficiently produced at relativistic energies via projectile fragmentation and projectile fission. Magnetic rigidity analysis in combination with atomic energy loss ( Bρ –Δ E – Bρ method) in profiled matter placed at dispersive focal planes represents the tool for spatial separation in flight. The next-generation in-flight separators at high energies will consist of multiple degrader stages to provide intense monoisotopic fragment beams of all elements up to uranium. The pre-separator layout with the first degrader system holds many technical challenges, e.g. to handle the high-power primary beams characterized by a large range in time structure, from a DC…

Psychometric properties of the interaction on supervised classes scale (ISCS)

2016

Monte Carlo Simulations of Semi-Flexible Polymers

2005

We present Monte Carlo simulations on the phase behavior of semiflexible macromolecules. For a single chain this question is of biophysical interest given the fact that long and stiff DNA chains are typically folded up into very tight compartments. So one can ask the question how the state diagram of a semiflexible chain differs from the coilglobule behavior of a flexible macromolecule. Another effect connected with rigidity of the chains is their tendency to aggregate and form nematically ordered structures. As a consequence one has two competing phase transitions: a gas-liquid and an isotropic-nematic transition potentially giving rise to a complicated phase diagram.

Semiflexible Polymers Interacting with Planar Surfaces: Weak versus Strong Adsorption

2020

Semiflexible polymers bound to planar substrates by a short-range surface potential are studied by Molecular Dynamics simulations to clarify the extent to which these chain molecules can be considered as strictly two-dimensional. The Mechanics of Rigid Bodies

1990

The theory of rigid bodies is a particularly important part of general mechanics. Firstly, next to the spherically symmetric mass distributions that we studied in Sect. 1.30, the top is the simplest example of a body with finite extension. Secondly, its dynamics is a particularly beautiful model case to which one can apply the general principles of canonical mechanics and where one can study the consequences of the various space symmetries in an especially transparent manner.

Application of the Pontryagin maximum principle to the time-optimal control in a chain of three spins with unequal couplings

2014

We solve a time-optimal control problem in a linear chain of three coupled spins 1/2 with unequal couplings. We apply the Pontryagin maximum principle and show that the associated Hamiltonian system is the one of a three-dimensional rigid body. We express the optimal control fields in terms of the components of the classical angular momentum of the rigid body. The optimal trajectories and the minimum control time are given in terms of elliptic functions and elliptic integrals.

Rigidity and Dynamics of Random Spring Networks

1996

The static and dynamic elastic properties of two-dimensional random networks composed of Hookean springs are analyzed. These networks are proved to be nonrigid with respect to small deformations, and the floppy mode ratio is calculated exactly. The vibrational spectrum is shown to consist only of zero-frequency and localized modes. The exponential decay of the amplitude and velocity of the transient wave front are shown to be exactly described by a quasi-one-dimensional model of noninteracting paths of propagation.

Physical model, theoretical aspects and applications of the flight of a ball in the atmosphere. Part II: Theoretical aspects in the case of vertical …

1991

If a ball is viewed as a rigid body, its flight in the atmosphere can be described by a system of six ordinary differential equations, which has been derived in the first part of this paper. In this following second part, the theoretical aspects such as the curvature of the orbit and certain velocity functions will be investigated in the case of the vertical angular frequency of the rotating ball, in which the differential equations reduce to a planar dynamical system. This system turns out to be not explicity solvable. The solutions of the corresponding ordinary or boundary value problems. computed numerically, are used to treat certain problems in international ball games. for example, th…
