Influence of saline and pH on collagen type I fibrillogenesis in vitro: Fibril polymorphism and colloidal gold labelling

2007

We have produced different collagen type I fibrils by in vitro fibrillogenesis of acetic acid-soluble collagen within the pH range 2.5-9.0, in the presence and absence of 150 mM NaCl. The varying relatively stable molecular assemblies and polymorphic fibrillar end-products produced after 24 h incubation have been assessed and compared by the TEM study of specimens negatively stained with uranyl acetate. In the presence of 150 mM NaCl, the assembly of collagen at low pH (2.5) leads to the formation of initial molecular aggregates that progressively link together at slightly higher pH (5.0) to form sub-fibrils and spindle-shaped D-banded bundles of sub-fibrils. At pH 6.0 these D-banded bundle…

Multi-MHz time-of-flight electronic bandstructure imaging of graphene on Ir(111)

2016

In the quest for detailed spectroscopic insight into the electronic structure at solid surfaces in a large momentum range, we have developed an advanced experimental approach. It combines the 3D detection scheme of a time-of-flight momentum microscope with an optimized filling pattern of the BESSY II storage ring. Here, comprehensive data sets covering the full surface Brillouin zone have been used to study faint substrate-film hybridization effects in the electronic structure of graphene on Ir(111), revealed by a pronounced linear dichroism in angular distribution. The method paves the way to 3D electronic bandmapping with unprecedented data recording efficiency.

Moisture absorption by epoxy/montmorillonite nanocomposite

2009

The peculiarities of moisture absorption of epoxy–nanoclay composite are estimated in the paper. Second Fick’s law of diffusion was used to predict moisture diffusivity and equilibrium moisture content using accelerated analytical procedure. It was experimentally confirmed that sorption process in NC passes more slowly than in pure epoxy resin, for the highest filler content diffusivity reduces about half of diffusivity as for epoxy resin. The deviation from mixture rule was obtained for the equilibrium moisture content and the estimation of interphase content in composite was undertaken. It was determined that the higher content of interphase consistently leads to greater moisture absorpti…

The effect of introduction of montmorillonite clay (MMT) on the elastic properties of polycarbonate (PC) composition with acrylonitrile-butadiene sty…

2015

Abstract Polycarbonate (PC)/acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene terpolymer (ABS)/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites have been obtained by melt compounding in a twin-screw extruder. Structural and elastic properties have been characterized. The theoretical analysis of the elastic properties of PC/ABS/MMT composite with a widely varied number of elementary layers in clay filler particles has been performed in order to estimate the influence of the degree of exfoliation of particles on the effect of reinforcement of the material. Results of the theoretical analysis have been compared with the experimental data about the effects of unmodified and two types of organically modified montmorillonite …

Elasticity and long-term behavior of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET)/montmorillonite (MMT) composites

2014

Abstract Recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) nanocomposites with various amounts of montmorillonite clay (MMT) have been manufactured by using twin screw extrusion. By rising MMT weight content Wf up to 1 wt.% it is possible to increase yield strength and ultimate strength of the composite by 17% and 27% respectively in comparison to neat rPET. Introduction of MMT in the rPET leads also to considerable increase of the modulus of elasticity E. Relationship E(Wf), however, is non-linear and is characterized by slow-down in E growth along with increasing MMT content. At low nanofiller content experimental results are sufficiently well described by using the method of Mori–Tanaka and the…

Compatibilized Polyamide 6/Polyethylene Blends Clay Nanocomposites: Effect of the Degradation and Stabilization of the Clay Modifier

2008

Abstract Blends of polyamide 6 (PA6) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) were compatibilized using an already investigated method and a sample of Cloisite 15A, a montmorillonite modified with ammonium quaternary salts was added. The blends were prepared in a twin screw extruder and characterized from a morphological, rheological and mechanical point of view. The results indicated that, despite a good morphology achieved in the filled blends and a moderate intercalation of the clay, the mechanical properties are far from being good, especially the ultimate properties. In order to investigate the possible influence of the inhibition of the crystallization and of the degradation of the organi…

Synthesis and Properties of Amine-Cured Epoxy/Organophilic Layered Silicate Nanocomposites

2009

Epoxy-layered silicate composites have been prepared by dispersing an organically modified montmorillonite (Nanofil 919) in an epoxy resin and curing in the presence of an aromatic hardener. Dispersion of the layered silicate within the epoxy matrix was verified using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy revealing that interaction improves upon organic silicate modification. Flexural properties and toughness increase with the organic silicate loading whereas glass transition temperature decreases and thermal stability remains practically unmodified.

The role of organoclay and matrix type in photo-oxidation of polyolefin/clay nanocomposite films

2009

Abstract In this paper the photo-oxidation behaviour of polyolefin/clay nanocomposite films was studied; in particular, the effect of the amount of organo-modifier and the matrix polarity on the photo-oxidation was investigated. Two different organo-modified clays and compositions of LDPE/EVA blend films were used and the photo-oxidation was followed by mechanical and spectroscopic analyses. The organoclay and matrix type strongly influence the photo-oxidative behaviour of nanocomposite films. The films filled with CL15A show a faster loss of mechanical performance and higher carbonyl formation with respect to the films filled with the CL20A. Additionally, the LDPE based nanocomposite under…

Morphology and Properties of Polyethylene/Clay Nanocomposite Drawn Fibers

2008

The influence of an elongational flow on the morphology of PE/clay nanocomposite drawn fibers was studied. An increase of the elastic modulus and the tensile strength as well as a decrease of the elongation at break are observed with increasing draw ratio. The applied elongational gradient orients the polymer chains and the clay particles along the spinning direction. When the applied flow results in the formation and the orientation of exfoliated nanoparticles, a pronounced increase of the mechanical properties is observed. The dispersed clay particles can be broken and oriented by the extensional flow, which might indicate a flow induced intercalated/exfoliated morphology transition.

Preparation and characterization of polyamide 6/polyethylene blend-clay nanocomposites in the presence of compatibilisers and stabilizing system

2010

Abstract Several compatibilising systems were added to high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyamide 6 (PA6) blends in the presence of an organically modified montmorillonite (OMM). All the blends were prepared by using a co-rotating twin-screw extruder and characterized by SEM, TEM and XRD analyses. In addition, the rheological behaviour and the mechanical properties – tensile and impact – were evaluated. The presence of OMM affects the dimensions of the polymeric phases in the blend but not their mutual adhesion, granted only by the compatibilisers. TEM, SEM and XRD analyses indicated that there is a strict correlation between the compatibilisation level and the final interlayer distance…
