Pre-operative leukocytosis: a potential poor prognosis risk factor in cardiac device implantation: a case report
2022
Introduction. Despite the benefits of the implantation of cardiac rhythm management devices cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) infection is an emerging problem New debate emerged about the unclear role of the pre-operative alteration of pro-inflammatory parameters, such as leukocytosis, in the development CIED infection and/or heart failure, and its consequent impact on the timing of ICD implantation/reimplantation. Case report. A 65 years old patient with a history of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) type II, ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias, chronic myocardial ischemia, heart failure was admitted to hospital.Healthcare workers opted for ICD implantation despite the presence of…
Factors related to survival from oral cancer in an Andalusian population sample (Spain)
2007
Introduction: Approximately 3% of malignant tumors originate in the oral cavity. The majority are squamous cell carcinomas, and a small percentage, malignant tumors of the salivary glands, lymphoreticular diseases, bone tumors, melanomas, sarcomas, malignant odontogenic tumors and metastases of tumors from other locations. The prognosis of these pathologies depends on the size, infiltration, and site of the lesion, the presence or absence of metastatic spread, and to a certain degree the differentiation of the tumor. The prognosis of an oral cancer remains generally negative, with 5-year survival figures below 50%, producing high rates of mortality and morbidity. Objectives: To evaluate the…
FACTORES HUMANOS ASOCIADOS A LOS ACCIDENTES MORTALES DE MOTOCICLETAS SCOOTER EN ESPAÑA
2017
Progestogens and risk of breast cancer: a link between bone and breast?
2015
This article reviews the data supporting the role of receptor activator of the nuclear factor kappa (RANK) and its ligand, RANKL, in progestogen-induced breast cancer. Both experimental and clinical studies have been included. The expression of both RANK and RANKL has been described in epithelial cells of both mice and humans. Experiments of gain and loss of function in mice have shown that RANK/RANKL mediate alveologenesis during pregnancy or the estrous cycle. Moreover, the participation of the RANK/RANKL has been detected in models of breast carcinogenesis associated with progestogens-like medroxyprogesterone acetate. Recent clinical studies have found that the expression of RANK is asso…
Plantar pressure distribution analysis in normal weight young women and men with normal and claw feet: a cross-sectional study
2005
We analyzed the plantar support in 72 normal-weight young voluntaries (46 women, 26 men), by a baropodometric platform. We considered subjects with claw foot (CFS) and subjects with normal foot (NFS). We found a significant reduction of total plantar support surface in the CFS (P < 0.0001 for women, P < 0.001 for men), due to the reduction of the forefoot and rear foot areas of both plantar imprints. Indeed, CFS of both sexes exhibited higher values of both plantar pressure and peak pressure, compared to the NFS. Moreover, the load per units of plantar surface increased in CFS compared to the NFS. In conclusion, the reduction of plantar support surfaces in CFS of both sexes was associated t…
Dairy calcium intake and lifestyle risk factors for bone loss in hiv-infected and uninfected mediterranean subjects
2012
Abstract Background Despite the reported high prevalence of osteoporosis in the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-population, there have been no previous studies examining dairy calcium intake and bone mineral density (BMD) in HIV-subjects. We assessed the prevalence of low BMD in HIV-infected and uninfected subjects and analyzed the effects of calcium intake, lifestyle and HIV-related risk factors on BMD. Methods One hundred and twelve HIV-infected subjects were consecutively enrolled. Seventy- six HIV-uninfected subjects matched for age and sex were enrolled as the control group. The HIV-subjects were interviewed about lifestyle habits and completed a weekly food-frequency questionnaire …
Rates of Upper Facet Joint Violation in Minimally Invasive Percutaneous and Open Instrumentation: A Comparative Cohort Study of Different Insertion T…
2017
Background Minimally invasive pedicle screw placement may have a higher incidence of violation of the superior cephalad unfused facet joint. Study Aims We investigated the incidence and risk factors of upper facet joint violation in percutaneous robot-assisted instrumentation versus percutaneous fluoroscopy-guided and open transpedicular instrumentation. Methods A retrospective study including all consecutive patients who underwent lumbar instrumentation, fusion, and decompression for spondylolisthetic stenosis and degenerative disk disease was conducted between January 2012 and January 2016. All operations were performed by the same surgeon; the patients were divided into three groups acc…
Estimation of structural and geometrical properties of cortical bone by computerized tomography in 78-year-old women
2009
The structural and geometrical properties of the tibia shaft were investigated at two sections by means of computerized tomography (CT) in 78-year-old women with high (n = 19) and low (n = 17) calcaneal bone mineral density (BMD, g/cm3) previously measured by 125I-photon absorption. The high BMD group had a 20-21% higher tibial BMD and 9-12% higher bone cross-sectional area than was observed in the low BMD group. The distribution of bone mass indicated that the low BMD group had lost bone mainly from the endosteal surface, especially in the anterior part of the tibia. However, both groups had a similar basic pattern of mass distribution at the measured sections. The high BMD group had highe…
Nonadherence in outpatient thrombosis prophylaxis with low molecular weight heparins after major orthopaedic surgery
2010
Background: According to some current guidelines, extended thromboprophylaxis after hip and knee arthroplasties is recommended. Outpatient prophylaxis with low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) is an important part of this prophylaxis, although the rates of adherence to these regimens is not known. Questions/purposes: We determined (1) the degree of nonadherence (NA) of patients with LMWH outpatient prophylaxis, and (2) whether specific independent factors explain NA. Methods: NA was determined by syringe count and by indirect and direct questions to patients. We defined six different NA indicators. To identify factors explaining LMWH NA, we used three different logistic regression models. R…
An update on the relationships between rheumatoid arthritis and atherosclerosis
2010
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease. Cardiovascular events are the most important cause of mortality and morbidity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Beyond the traditional cardiovascular risk factors, chronic systemic inflammation has been shown to be a crucial factor in atherosclerosis development and progression from endothelial dysfunction to plaque rupture and thrombosis. Many studies have shown that atherosclerosis is not a passive event like accumulation of lipids in the vessel walls; by contrast, it represents an active inflammation of the vessels. Inflammatory cells such as macrophages, monocytes and T cells play important roles in the development of both rhe…
