Response to salinity stress of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viciae strains in the presence of different legume host plants
2011
We investigated the effect of residual salts from the previous summer’s irrigation on two non-irrigated cover crops—broad bean and common vetch—and on their rhizobial symbiontics. Before sowing, seeds were inoculated with a salt-tolerant strain and a salt-sensitive strain of Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar viciae. An increase in the electrical conductivity of the saturated-soil extract from 2.0 dS m−1 to 6.0 dS m−1 caused a severe reduction of broad bean biomass, while growth of common vetch was almost unaffected by the salinity level. Our results clearly indicate that common vetch as a cover crop may increase the availability of nitrogen in soil more than broad bean also in saline environme…
A case study of a British ERASMUS student in Italy
2013
This article focuses on the shaping of social identities and emotions of one British young woman who spent a Year Abroad (YA) in Italy as an ERASMUS student. I have examined her negotiation and (re)construction of social identities during her experience abroad from a poststructuralist perspective, which sees individuals’ identities as dynamic and changeable sites of struggles (Norton Pierce, 1995 and 2000). In order to analyse the participant's accounts of her language learning and emotional experiences during her YA I have used the notion of emotional investment developed by Pavlenko (2012). This notion has helped me to understand how, why and to what extent the participant in the study ga…
Comparison of condensed versus noncondensed cycling test methods and correlation to a 185 minutes’ indoor race simulation
2017
Master's thesis Sports Science ME517 - University of Agder 2017 Background: The validity of a currently used condensed indoor test protocols (C-TP) as measurement of competitive cycling performance is questioned. Purpose: C-TP contain testing of wattage at lactate threshold (LTW), maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) and a Wingate anaerobic test (WAnT), performed consecutively during one session. As comparison these tests were separated and performed individually over three consecutive days, giving a non-condensed test protocol (NC-TP). The results were compared to a 5min all-out cycling test (5min all-out) performed individually and as part of a 185 minutes’ race simulation. Method: During …

A PSO highway alignment optimization algorithm considering environmental constraints
2013
In recent years, there has been a growing need to develop and delineate algorithms that quickly provide optimized highway alignments. The matter is very complex since it is dominated by several factors and engineers have to achieve different and relevant targets (such as minimization of construction and earthwork costs, compliance with environmental and right-of-way constraints, maximization of safety and comfort for users, conformity with geometric standards). The possible solutions of this problem are clearly infinite and only modern artificial intelligence techniques can really simplify and speed up the highway design process. In this study a search algorithm, based on a Swarm Artificial…
Effect of 30 years of road traffic abandonment on epiphytic moss diversity
2014
Road traffic emits a cocktail of pollutants that can influence the vegetation and plant diversity in neighboring areas. However, the recovery potential of bryophytes after traffic abandonment is still little explored. In addition, the effects of the main pollutants of road verges, such as metals and salinity, on moss flora need to be investigated. In our study, we compared the moss richness and diversity in two closely related veteran tree allees of high conservation importance. The allees in Gryżów and Lubrza, Poland, were chosen because of their similarity in age, geographical location, type of surrounding areas, and tree species. The only difference was that the trees in Gryżów had not b…
The effects of short-term sojourn experiences on adolescents : five narratives of adolescent Finnish students in a comenius project: EU & I
2012
Tutkimuksessani tarkastelen lyhytaikaisen ulkomailla oleskelun vaikutuksia viiteen suomalaiseen alakouluikäiseen oppilaaseen.
Causality-based Social Media Analysis for Normal Users Credibility Assessment in a Political Crisis
2019
Information trustworthiness assessment on political social media discussions is crucial to maintain the order of society, especially during emergent situations. The polarity nature of political topics and the echo chamber effect by social media platforms allow for a deceptive and a dividing environment. During a political crisis, a vast amount of information is being propagated on social media, that leads up to a high level of polarization and deception by the beneficial parties. The traditional approaches to tackling misinformation on social media usually lack a comprehensive problem definition due to its complication. This paper proposes a probabilistic graphical model as a theoretical vi…
Iniziative per la diffusione della lingua e della cultura italiana nella Cina pre-1949
2020
Until recently scholars who have examined the diffusion of the Italian language in China have focussed on the People’s Republic of China. However, we have proof of early teaching and cultural activities by Italian schools in China since the late 19th century. Most of them though were run by Catholic missions receiving financial support from the Italian government and initially they did not include language teaching, due to the locals’ lack of interest. The reason for this was to be found in the weak diplomatic, political and economic role played – particularly when compared with other foreign powers. This was clear to Italian diplomats – yet a real breakthrough for the popularization of Ita…
Due padri, due figli: modelli drammatici 'al maschile' nelle Troiane di seneca
2017
In Senecan Troades the female component plays a prominent role; nevertheless the tragedy stages, with an evident reduplication, two exemplary cases of male pairs consisting of a father and a son: Achilles and Pyrrhus on the one hand, Hector and Astyanax on the other. The papers deals with that, according to the idea that Seneca composes the drama by re-reading the myth in the light of a crucial aspect of Latin thought such as the inheritance of values and patterns of behavior that passes from father to son.
