Optimizing artificial neural networks for the evaluation of asphalt pavement structural performance
2019
Artificial Neural Networks represent useful tools for several engineering issues. Although they were adopted in several pavement-engineering problems for performance evaluation, their application on pavement structural performance evaluation appears to be remarkable. It is conceivable that defining a proper Artificial Neural Network for estimating structural performance in asphalt pavements from measurements performed through quick and economic surveys produces significant savings for road agencies and improves maintenance planning. However, the architecture of such an Artificial Neural Network must be optimised, to improve the final accuracy and provide a reliable technique for enriching d…
A LOGISTICS PATTERN FOR FRUIT AND VEGETABLE TRANSPORTATION FROM ISLAND REGION: THE CASE OF SICILY
2014
The globalization of markets regards many sectors in the E.U. and among them also the fruit and vegetable in the face of growing and increasingly intense competition exerted by the products of countries with emerging economies. But, at the same time, the globalization can also lead to the opening of new potential markets for the products, when and where the transport system, more than other things, appears to be efficient and effective and makes possible to reach the target markets in the shortest time possible and at the lowest possible cost. It is therefore very useful to create a model that takes into account hepeculiarities of the different modes of transport between the different origi…
IL FIBROADENOMA DELLA MAMMELLA: STUDIO SU 447 CASI
1994
The authors examined a total of 519 nodules diagnosed preoperatively as mammary fibroadenomas between 1986 and 1991. 235 nodules were removed immediately after diagnosis, either because they had a diameter of over 3 cm or because they were present in women over 45 years old. The preoperative diagnosis was confirmed in 94.9% of cases and after histological examination the nodule was only found to be a carcinoma in one case (0,4%). Those cases not operated at the time of diagnosis were monitored for period of 2 years. At the end of this period 118 nodules had been removed due to a more or less rapid increase in volume. The histological examination of these nodules confirmed the initial diagno…
Wpływ epidemii koronawirusa na medialne transmisje Eucharystii
2021
The coronavirus epidemic has become a completely unexpected challenge for the pastoral activity of the Church. The introduced restrictions on the number of the faithful who can participate in the parish liturgy and in some countries even the complete closure of places of worship, resulted in a new perception of the role of media broadcasts of the Eucharist. The article presents the history of introducing television broadcasts of the Holy Mass and the related and variously solved problem of the place where such a liturgy is celebrated. Issues related to the specific phenomenon of broadcasting the Holy Mass from parish churches via the Internet with the use of one webcam are also discussed. A…
The proceedings of Spanish Audiovisual Councils on discriminatory discourse
2021
Mass media, and especially television, are powerful discursive instruments, responsible for the construction of social imagery through ideologically determined content. For this reason, the creation of a regulatory body with authority over the audiovisual sector in countries without one was urged by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in 2000. Spain is the only EU country without an audiovisual council with authority at the state level. Currently, only the Audiovisual Council of Catalonia (CAC), created in 2000, and the Audiovisual Council of Andalusia (CAA), which dates from 2004, operate in Spain. Within an environment increasingly marked by hate speech, this research anal…

Dear Editor,We read with interest the article by Osman et al. titled ‘Trocar assisted distal shunt tube insertion with intra-operative X-Ray confirmation’. The authors purpose their technique to pl...
Traumatic brain injury: integrated approaches to improve prevention, clinical care, and research
2017
Executive summary A concerted effort to tackle the global health problem posed by traumatic brain injury (TBI) is long overdue. TBI is a public health challenge of vast, but insufficiently recognised, proportions. Worldwide, more than 50 million people have a TBI each year, and it is estimated that about half the world’s population will have one or more TBIs over their lifetime. TBI is the leading cause of mortality in young adults and a major cause of death and disability across all ages in all countries, with a disproportionate burden of disability and death occurring in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). It has been estimated that TBI costs the global economy approximately $…
ELS live surgery: a developing story
2019
Since 2015, the European Laryngological Society (ELS) has organized on a yearly basis the European Laryngological Live Surgery Broadcast. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate the increasing worldwide audience. The number of individual computers logged in, number of estimated audience, and number of countries with an active audience were calculated and compared to the numbers in 2015. In 2018, 19 live interventions were performed in three parallel sessions. The surgeons worked in 10 departments in 8 different countries. The number of individual computers logged in increased from 1000 in 2015 to 16000 in 2018. The estimated audience increased from 3000 to 32000 visitors. The number of cou…
Contribution of area 19 to the foreground-background-interaction of the cat: an analysis based on single cell recordings and behavioural experiments.
1990
The contribution of area 19 to pattern discrimination in the cat was studied by single cell recordings in this area and by behavioural experiments before and after bilateral lesions. In order to make quantitative comparisons between behavioural performance and that of cell systems, we introduced a new parameter that characterizes visual neurons by their signal-to-noise (S/N) thresholds. A structured visual background made up of Gaussian visual broadband noise which could be moved was superimposed on the signal (moving bars or outline patterns) and the S/N characteristics of the response were determined by varying the signal intensity. The detection performance of cats after bilateral lesion…
Intestinal melanoma: A broad spectrum of clinical presentation
2011
Abstract INTRODUCTION Small intestine melanomas are rare and the most of them are metastases from primary cutaneous neoplasms. PRESENTATION OF CASE Below, we report two cases of small intestine metastatic melanoma with very different clinical presentation. DISCUSSION Still now, primary versus metastatic origin is often unclear. Small bowel melanoma is often asymptomatic. However, clinical picture can be various; it may occurs with non specific symptoms and signs of gastro-intetstinal involvement, like chronic abdominal pain, occult or gross bleeding and weight loss, or with an emergency picture due to intestinal intussusception, obstruction or, rarely, perforation. CONCLUSION Small bowel me…
