This paper deals with the validation of a Reinforcement Learning (RL) policy for dosage optimization of Erythropoietin (EPO). This policy was obtained using data from patients in a haemodialysis program during the year 2005. The goal of this policy was to maintain patients' Haemoglobin (Hb) level between 11.5 g/dl and 12.5 g/dl. An individual management was needed, as each patient usually presents a different response to the treatment. RL provides an attractive and satisfactory solution, showing that a policy based on RL would be much more successful in achieving the goal of maintaining patients within the desired target of Hb than the policy followed by the hospital so far. Perceptually weighted optical flow for motion-based segmentation in MPEG-4 paradigm

In the MPEG-4 paradigm, the sequence must be described in terms of meaningful objects. This meaningful, high-level representation should emerge from low-level primitives such as optical flow and prediction error which are the basic elements of previous-generation video coders. The accuracy of the high-level models strongly depends on the robustness of the primitives used. It is shown how perceptual weighting in optical flow computation gives rise to better motion estimates which consistently improve motion-based segmentation compared to equivalent unweighted motion estimates.

The quality of the subspace separation solution may easily be degraded essentially, if the underlying assumptions become noticeably violated, which is a normal situation in practice. Abstract In this paper, a simplified model is proposed for hand calculation of the push-down curve of reinforced two-span beam-column substructures with the mid-span column subjected to a vertical load inducing progressive collapse response. The model takes into account the flexural, arch and catenary strength mechanisms and the axial stiffness of RC compressed columns. The model was validated against experimental data available in the literature. We present an overview of the major findings of the principal component analysis (pca) approach to facial analysis. In a neural network or connectionist framework, this approach is known as the linear autoassociator approach. Faces are represented as a weighted sum of macrofeatures (eigenvectors or eigenfaces) extracted from a cross-product matrix of face images. Based on the analog of the quantum valley Hall effect, a non-trivial bandgap is formed by breaking the inversion symmetry of the unit cell.
