Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs): Advances and Challenges

2021

The study of the electrochemical catalyst conversion of renewable electricity and carbon oxides into chemical fuels attracts a great deal of attention by different researchers. The main role of this process is in mitigating the worldwide energy crisis through a closed technological carbon cycle, where chemical fuels, such as hydrogen, are stored and reconverted to electricity via electrochemical reaction processes in fuel cells. The scientific community focuses its efforts on the development of high-performance polymeric membranes together with nanomaterials with high catalytic activity and stability in order to reduce the platinum group metal applied as a cathode to build stacks of proton …

Misfit evaluation of dental implant-supported metal frameworks manufactured with different techniques: Photoelastic and strain gauge measurements

2016

This study aims to compare in-vitro the fitting accuracy of implant-supported metal frameworks used for full-arch orthodontic restoration. The hypotheses tested were as follows: (1) for a fixed implant morphology, strains developed within the framework depend on how the framework had been fabricated and (2) stresses transferred to the implant–bone interface are related to the amount of framework misfit. Metal frameworks were fabricated using four different manufacturing techniques: conventional lost-wax casting, resin cement luting, electrospark erosion, and computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing milling. Each framework was instrumented with three strain gauges to measure strai…

Electrochemical incineration of oxalic acid in the presence of NaCl

2008

Recent researches have demonstrated that electrochemical methods offer an attractive alternative to traditional routes for treating wastewaters containing toxic or/and refractory organic pollutants. The effectiveness of the electrochemical treatment depends on many factors including the presence in solution of specie able to act as mediators. In particular, the effect of chloride ions on the performances of the process has been the object of numerous researches. However, up to now, many practical and theoretical aspects about this argument are not completely clear. In the present work, the anodic incineration of oxalic acid (OA) in the presence of NaCl has been investigated with the aim of …

Net currents obtained from zero-average potentials in single amphoteric nanopores

2013

We have studied experimentally and theoretically the rectifying properties of a single asymmetric nanopore functionalized with amphoteric lysine groups and characterized the net current obtained with zero-average time dependent potentials. The pH-controlled rectification phenomena may be relevant to bio-electrochemistry, pH sensing and regulation, and energy conversion. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Identification of Brassicadiene, a Diterpene Hydrocarbon Attractive to the Invasive Stink Bug Bagrada hilaris, from Volatiles of Cauliflower Seedling…

2020

Brassicadiene, a novel tricyclic diterpene hydrocarbon, was identified by a combination of mass spectrometry, microchemical tests, and analysis of NMR spectra. The compound constitutes >90% of the volatile organic compounds produced by cauliflower seedlings, Brassica oleracea var. botrytis. The invasive stink bug Bagrada hilaris is strongly attracted to brassicadiene, providing a mechanism for this herbivore, which specializes on cruciferous plants, to locate its hosts in a nutrient-rich and vulnerable stage.

Reproducibility in Electroorganic Synthesis—Myths and Misunderstandings

2021

Abstract The use of electric current as a traceless activator and reagent is experiencing a renaissance. This sustainable synthetic method is evolving into a hot topic in contemporary organic chemistry. Since researchers with various scientific backgrounds are entering this interdisciplinary field, different parameters and methods are reported to describe the experiments. The variation in the reported parameters can lead to problems with the reproducibility of the reported electroorganic syntheses. As an example, parameters such as current density or electrode distance are in some cases more significant than often anticipated. This Minireview provides guidelines on reporting electrosyntheti…

Application of polydopamine functionalized zinc oxide for glucose biosensor design

2021

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures are widely used in optical sensors and biosensors. Functionalization of these nanostructures with polymers enables optical properties of ZnO to be tailored. Polydopamine (PDA) is a highly biocompatible polymer, which can be used as a versatile coating suitable for application in sensor and biosensor design. In this research, we have grown ZnO-based nanorods on the surface of ITO-modified glass-plated optically transparent electrodes (glass/ITO). Then the deposition of the PDA polymer layer on the surface of ZnO nanorods was performed from an aqueous PDA solution in such a way glass/ITO/ZnO-PDA structure was formed. The ZnO-PDA composite was characterized by S…

Proton reduction by phosphinidene-capped triiron clusters

2021

Bis(phosphinidene)-capped triiron carbonyl clusters, including electron rich derivatives formed by substitution with chelating diphosphines, have been prepared and examined as proton reduction catalysts. Treatment of the known cluster [Fe3(CO)9(µ3-PPh)2] (1) with various diphosphines in refluxing THF (for 5, refluxing toluene) afforded the new clusters [Fe3(CO)7(µ3-PPh)2(κ2-dppb)] (2), [Fe3(CO)7(µ3-PPh)2(κ2-dppv)] (3), [Fe3(CO)7(µ3-PPh)2(κ2-dppe)] (4) and [Fe3(CO)7(µ3-PPh)2(µ-κ2-dppf)] (5) in moderate yields, together with small amounts of the corresponding [Fe3(CO)8(µ3-PPh)2(κ1-Ph2PxPPh2)] cluster (x = -C4H6-, -C2H2-, -C2H4-, -C3H6-, -C5H4FeC5H4-). The molecular structures of complexes 3 a…

Polysubstituted ferrocenes as tunable redox mediators

2018

A series of four ferrocenyl ester compounds, 1-methoxycarbonyl- (1), 1,1’-bis(methoxycarbonyl)- (2), 1,1’,3-tris(methoxycarbonyl)- (3) and 1,1’,3,3’-tetrakis(methoxycarbonyl)ferrocene (4), has been studied with respect to their potential use as redox mediators. The impact of the number and position of ester groups present in 1–4 on the electrochemical potential E1/2 is correlated with the sum of Hammett constants. The 1/1+–4/4+ redox couples are chemically stable under the conditions of electrolysis as demonstrated by IR and UV–vis spectroelectrochemical methods. The energies of the C=O stretching vibrations of the ester moieties and the energies of the UV–vis absorptions of 1–4 and 1+–4+ c…
