Abstract The northwestern Chinese Tianshan is a key part of the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Voluminous arc-related igneous rocks in this region have recorded the opening and closure of several oceanic basins that may represent southern branches of the Paleo-Asian Ocean. We have conducted geochemical, geochronological and Hf-in-zircon isotopic studies on mafic and felsic intrusive rocks in the northwestern Chinese Tianshan to provide important clues for the evolution of the Junggar Ocean and to understand the early Paleozoic crustal growth in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Abstract The metamorphic rocks in the Neoproterozoic (Pan-African) Mozambique belt of southwestern Tanzania, around the town of Songea, can be subdivided into one- and two pyroxene bearing charnockitic gneisses, migmatitic granitoid gneisses and amphibolite-facies metapelites. Lower-grade amphibolite-facies rocks are rare and can be classified as sillimanite- and/or garnet-bearing metapelites. Most of the studied charnockitic gneisses show excellent corona textures with large orthopyroxene grains rimmed by clinopyroxene, followed by quartz and well developed garnet rims due to the reaction Opx + Pl = Grt + Cpx + Qtz that formed during isobaric cooling. Abstract The Guira de Jauco Amphibolite Complex underlies the Mayari–Baracoa Ophiolitic Belt (eastern Cuba) and is composed of highly foliated amphibolite, locally with blocks of sheared serpentinitie that enclose concordant layers of amphibolite. These amphibolites are interpreted as remnants of a sub-ophiolitic metamorphic sole likely formed during late Cretaceous times before the initiation of the collision between the Caribbean and the North American plates. Abstract The Paleoproterozoic basement of northern Malawi shows evidence for granulite-facies metamorphism older than the 1930±30 Ma-old Nyika Granite. Low-pressure granulite-facies metamorphism in regionally coherent and extensively exposed cordierite-garnet granulite reached 750–850°C and 5-5.5 kbar. The Chelinda Granite intruded during this event and has been dated by single zircons at 1995±0.4 Ma ( 207 Pb 206 Pb age; 2σ-mean errors). Anatectic melt which formed concurrently with cordierite growth in the cordierite-garnet granulite yielded a 207 Pb 206 Pb zircon age of 1988±0.6 Ma. Abstract The Abu Barqa Metamorphic Suite (ABMS) represents the oldest part of the Arabian–Nubian Shield in southern Jordan. It comprises tonalitic gneiss, metasediments including schist and paragneiss, and granitic gneiss, intruded by later granitic bodies. Geochemically, the majority of the schist samples have shale and Fe-shale protoliths, while the paragneisses represent metagreywacke. Tectonic discrimination diagrams indicate that the protolith of the ABMS was deposited at an active continental margin/island arc setting. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) U–Th–Pb dating of magmatic zircon from the synkinematic Egrigoz and Koyunoba granites and a leucogranite dyke dates core-complex formation in the northern Anatolide belt of western Turkey at 24–19 Ma. The granites intrude into the footwall of the Simav detachment and are strongly elongated in the NNE direction parallel to tectonic transport on the detachment. Although large parts of the granites are undeformed, localized mylonitic to ultramylonitic deformation occurs directly beneath the Simav detachment and preserves evidence of progressive deformation from ductile to brittle conditions. article i nfo High pressure igneous rocks (tonalites), generated by partial melting of subducted basaltic rocks accreted to the mantle wedge, are present in the La Corea serpentinite-matrix melange (eastern Cuba) as centimeter- to meter-sized blocks and as concordant to crosscutting veins within high-pressure parent amphibolite blocks. The slab melts have adakitic signatures, in agreement with formation after partial melting of metabasite. This contribution is a synthesis of knowledge about the Permian of South Europe, which mainly consists of continental, terrigenous and igneous deposits. Marine sediments crop out in a few Italian areas (eastern Southern Alps, central-southern sectors of the peninsula and Sicily), as well as spread from the ex-Yugoslavia to the present Mediterranean sea, where they represent the westermost patterns of the old Tethys. In this context, data and interpretations vary sensibly from one region to another. Despite this, we have tried to establish the most typical events or features. Abstract Two syntectonic plutons of Cambrian age intruded Neoproterozoic metaturbidites in Namibia at the junction of the NS trending Kaoko and EW trending Damara belts. Sinistral transpression in the Kaoko Belt produced km-scale upright D1 folds overprinted by minor D2 folds. D3 is associated with N–S shortening in the Damara Belt. The plutons show two main pulses of intrusion: hornblende syenite intruded late during D1 or during D2 and biotite granite during D3. Each tectonic event produced a strain shadow defined by the shape of folds and the foliation trend around the plutons. The evolution of the southern Menderes Massif in SW Turkey as revealed by zircon dating

This geochronological study concentrates on the evolution of the southern part of the Menderes Massif, a metamorphic core complex in W Turkey, by dating single zircons with the Pb–Pb evaporation and the U–Pb methods. We have analysed zircons from granitic augen gneisses of the core as well as from quartzites of the metasedimentary envelope. Zircons from the granitic core gneisses are euhedral with typical igneous morphologies. The single zircon ages of these gneisses indicate a time span for magmatic activity from 520 to 570 Ma with a major event at about 550 Ma.
