Ibandronic acid subsequent to raloxifene: Effect on bone metabolism and on cardiovascular risk factors

2015

s / Maturitas 81 (2015) 144–190 161 Materials andmethods: This randomized double-blind clinical trialwas carried out inAhvaz (Iran) fromAugust toDecember 2010. Forty postmenopausal women with symptoms of vaginal atrophy were randomly allocated to two groups to take vaginal suppositories of either 5mg hyaluronic acid sodium salt (n=20) or 1mg vitamin E (n=20) for 8 weeks. The symptoms of vaginal atrophy were evaluated by a self-assessed 4-point scale and the composite score was determined as none, mild, moderate, and severe in four periods. Results: The results showed that the symptoms were relieved significantly in both groups (P<0.001). The relief of symptomswas significantly superior in t…

Ovarian and Adrenal Hyperandrogenism

2007

Because in normal women androgens are secreted in almost equal quantities by both adrenals and ovaries, for many years many studies have tried to distinguish the source of androgen excess. However, in the last 10-15 years, the diagnoses of ovarian or adrenal hyperandrogenism have almost disappeared. This is due to the lack of specificity of dynamic tests as well as to the emphasis given on clinical information and ovarian sonography for the diagnosis of hyperandrogenic syndromes. However, determination of the source of increased androgens may still be useful for improving the classification and the understanding of androgen excess disorders. The aim of this review is to examine the source o…

Measurement of coagulation factors during rivaroxaban and apixaban treatment: Results from two crossover trials

2018

Abstract Background Prediction models for venous thromboembolism recurrence will likely be improved by adding levels of coagulation factors. Risk assessment is ideally performed during anticoagulant treatment, however, the influence of direct oral anticoagulants on coagulation factors is uncertain. Objective To assess the influence of rivaroxaban and apixaban on several coagulation factor levels. Methods In two crossover trials we assessed the influence of rivaroxaban and apixaban intake on factor (F)VIII, FXI and FXII‐activity and fibrinogen, von Willebrand factor (VWF:Ag), and d‐dimer levels. At three sessions with a washout period in between, blood was taken from 12 healthy male individu…

Background. Anticoagulant therapy, the cornerstone treatment in acute venous thromboembolism (VTE), strongly impacts thrombin generation (TG). Until now, the appearance of the TG curve in platelet rich plasma (PRP) from patients with acute VTE has not been investigated. Methods. We analyzed the shape of TG curves measured in PARP of 180 acute VTE patients. Results. Normal shape of TG curves was observed in 110 patients, 50 patients showed no TG and 20 patients showed biphasic TG curve. The linear regression analysis, adjusted for age, sex, VTE clinical phenotypes and therapy showed that the appearance of biphasic curves is significantly associated with female sex, presence of cancer and the…

Mirizzi syndrome in a patient with partial gastrectomy with Billroth II anastomosis: A case report

2020

Highlights • Obstructive jaundice may be a challenge for differential diagnosis. • Mirizzi Syndrome may simulate clinical and radiological presentation of common bile duct stones. • ERCP hardly achieves cannulation of biliary duct in altered anatomy, so gastroscope may be a correct choice in these cases. • Surgical treatment is essential in Mirizzi Syndrome.

Fixation free inguinal hernia repair with the 3D dynamic responsive prosthesis ProFlor: Features, procedural steps and long-term results

2019

Abstract Background Static and fixated meshes to repair mobile structures like the groin may seem a procedural incongruence. Inguinal hernia is described as a degenerative disease. Therefore, the objective of disease treatment should be the regeneration of wasted tissue. The fibrotic scar plate, a typical biologic response of conventional static meshes, does not represent tissue regeneration but rather a foreign body reaction. These contrasting aspects seem to be related to high complication rates of inguinal herniorrhaphy. Recent studies concerning the pathophysiology of the groin have led to the development of new concepts for repairing inguinal protrusions. A proprietary designed 3D dyna…

Vitamin D levels in Mediterranean breast cancer patients compared with those in healthy women

2018

To evaluate the vitamin D status of postmenopausal women with early estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer and to compare it with that of healthy postmenopausal women from the same Mediterranean region. STUDY DESIGN AND OUTCOME MEASURES: Data from 691 breast cancer (BC) patients in the B-ABLE cohort were analyzed after recent cancer intervention (recent-BC) or after a minimum of two years since this intervention (long-term-BC). Patients were also stratified by previous chemotherapy exposure (ChT+ and ChT-). Plasma levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] (25(OH)D) were compared with data from 294 healthy women (non-BC) by linear regression to estimate β-coefficients using non-BC participan…

Small bowel volvulus due to a large intestinal lipoma: A rare case report

2020

Highlights • These are rare, benign, slow-growing mesenchymal tumors originating from adipose tissue in the bowel wall. Lipomas of mesentery, mesocolon, and antimesenteric side of intestine are extremely rare. • We describe a case of small bowel obstruction secondary to volvulus due to an antimesenteric ileal lipoma. • Mesenteric lipomas are rare clinical entity, with less than 50 cases described in English language literature. CT scan is the gold standard imaging modality for diagnosis of mesenteric lipoma and other lipomatous abdominal masses. • It shows homogenous tumor of adipose tissue, gives information about features of the small bowel and if there is evidence of ischemia and can dem…

Mechanical rotational thrombectomy in long femoropopliteal artery and stent occlusion in COVID-19 patient: Case report

2021

Abstract Introduction Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) has been increasingly associated with thromboembolic complications. COVID-19 infection has a thrombogenic potential for stents. Herein, we report a case of stent thrombosis in diabetic obese patient COVID-19 positive where was previously released a Multilayer Flow Modulator stent (MFM) for large popliteal aneurysm. Case report A 78-year-old male was referred to our hospital for fever and acute pain in the left leg. At history, the same patient had endovascular procedure for a large symptomatic popliteal aneurysm, treated through release of three MFM. The pulmonary CT scan showed COVID-19 infection with confirm of rhino-laryngeal swab. …
