Automated single ring infiltrometer with a low-cost microcontroller circuit
2015
Automation of a new single ring infiltrometer.Data acquisition system based on the open source microcontroller platform Arduino.New method to minimize the disturbance of the soil surface.New approach to process transducer output. A method to automate data collection with a compact infiltrometer under constant head conditions was developed. The infiltrometer consists of a containment ring with a small quasi-constant head of water (i.e., 2-3mm) that is controlled by a Mariotte reservoir and a data acquisition system based on the open source microcontroller platform Arduino and a differential pressure transducer. The presented design can be easily reproduced and operated. The infiltrometer was …
A New Quasi-Static Cylindrical Roller Bearing Model to Accurately Consider Non-Hertzian Contact Pressure in Time Domain Simulations
2012
The accuracy of the fatigue life calculations in rolling bearing simulations is highly dependent on the precision of the roller-raceway contact simulations. Several different methods exist to simulate these pressure distributions and in time domain bearing simulations, where many contacts need evaluation, the simple and time efficient methods are more popular, yielding erroneous life estimates. This paper presents a new six degree of freedom frictionless quasi-static time domain cylindrical roller bearing model that uses high precision elastic half-space theory to simulate the contact pressures. The potentially higher computational demand using the advanced contact calculations is addressed…
A DC-DC power converter for PV module characterization
2014
In this paper, a standard-compliant electronic load setup for PV module curve detection which features high accuracy, low cost and components count is proposed. The proposed device is based on a DC-DC power converter in open-loop configuration. The proposed system is designed according to regulation constraints in order to achieve high performances in curve detection. Design criteria are discussed. The model is implemented in PSIM environment. Simulation based on data input of a commercial PV Conergy E215P module are carried out under several environmental conditions to show the accuracy of the proposed electronic load. Simulation results are reported.
Identification and robust control of DC/DC converter Hammerstein model
2008
Abstract—This paper deals with model-based robust control of dc/dc power electronic converters. The converter is described by means of a Hammerstein model consisting of the nonlinear static characteristics of the converter and a linear time-invariant (LTI) uncertainmodel whose parameters depend on the actual duty-cycle operating range. This suggests that the controller be designed using robust control techniques. In view of applying robust control, identification of the earlier LTI models is performed by means of simulation experiments, carried out on a converter switching model implemented onMATLAB/SIMULINK environment. Internal model control (IMC) structure is employed for the controller …
Controlling muscular force by functional electrical stimulation using intelligent PID
2015
Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) appears as a way of extremely promising research today to solve numerous pathology connected to the deficiencies of the nervous system. It is usually used for the rehabilitation of people with neurological disorders. Generally, skeletal muscles are activated by using Constant Frequency Trains (CFTs) with a fixed amplitude and inter-pulse duration. In addition, the systems of electrical stimulation do not adapt the parameters stimulation to obtain a desired force response during the rehabilitation session. The purpose of this study is to adapt automatically the stimulation parameters to the force desired by the clinician with an intelligent PID control…
Zigler-Nicols PID Tuning Method for Position Control of a Mobile Robot
2016
This paper presents the implementation and the tuning of PID controller for a mobile platform with differential steering. It presents a mobile platform built in the Department of Industrial Machinery & Equipment, of the Engineering Faculty of Sibiu for an European contest. In a first phase, a brief introduction to PID controller is made, followed by a description of the various robot's components and traction principles underlying locomotion of mobile platforms. At the end the paper contains several principles of tuning the PID controller for the mobile robot.
Hammerstein Model-Based Robust Control of DC/DC Converters
2007
This paper deals with model-based robust control of DC/DC power electronic converters. The converter is modelled by means of its static characteristic and a few continuous-time linear and time-invariant (LTI) models corresponding to contiguous ranges of duty-cycle. The model appears as a Hammerstein model in which the values of the parameters of the LTI part depend on the actual duty-cycle operating range. This suggests to describe the converter as an uncertain system to be controlled using robust control techniques. Frequency domain approach is used for describing the nominal model and the uncertainty. In view of applying robust control, identification of the LTI models is performed by mea…
Using the Microcontroller and the PLC in a RPP Robot Control
2012
This paper presents some aspects regarding the possibility of combining microcontroller and programmable logic controller (PLC) for robot control. The RPP robot is designed and manufactured within the Faculty of Engineering from “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu, as a patent: BRAŢ TELESCOPIC, Nr. 112418 B1, Int.CI.6 B 25 J 18/02, from 17.02.1997. Classical systems for programming and control of industrial robot are based on numerical control equipment, developed around a PC. Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) haves proven to be viable alternatives to driving machine tools, industrial systems and Robots. Microcontrollers as computers offer advantage due to programmable inputs and outputs …
Emergent behaviors and scalability for multi-agent reinforcement learning-based pedestrian models
2017
This paper analyzes the emergent behaviors of pedestrian groups that learn through the multiagent reinforcement learning model developed in our group. Five scenarios studied in the pedestrian model literature, and with different levels of complexity, were simulated in order to analyze the robustness and the scalability of the model. Firstly, a reduced group of agents must learn by interaction with the environment in each scenario. In this phase, each agent learns its own kinematic controller, that will drive it at a simulation time. Secondly, the number of simulated agents is increased, in each scenario where agents have previously learnt, to test the appearance of emergent macroscopic beha…

2013
An analysis of EMC standards related to smart grid devices with PLC port has been carried out and the standardization lacks have been pointed out with reference to the evaluation of electromagnetic immunity to narrowband, coming from other communication systems connected to the grid, and RF disturbances conducted disturbances, usually present in a power grid. The new ID is equipped with a measuring board, a STM32 microcontroller, for data elaboration and memorization, and a ST7580 N-PSK powerline transceiver. An experimental test …
