The substituent effect of π-electron delocalization in N-methylamino-nitropyridine derivatives: crystal structure and DFT calculations
2020
AbstractThe crystal and molecular structures of 3-(N-methylamino)-2-nitropyridine, 5-(N-methylamino)-2-nitropyridine and 2-(N-methylamino)-5-nitropyridine have been characterized by X-ray diffraction. To perform conformational analysis, the geometries of the compounds as well as their conformers and rotamers were optimized at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level. The resulting data were used to analyze the π-electron delocalization effect in relation to the methylamino group rotation in ortho-, meta- and para-substitution positions. Quantitative aromaticity indices were calculated based on which we estimated the electronic structures of the analyzed compounds. The substituent effect of the met…
Two bimetallic layered materials with “Cu4Fe3” defective cubane units: syntheses, structures and magnetic properties of {[CuII(tn)]2[FeII(CN)6]}3·[Na…
2005
Abstract Reactions of the [Fe III (CN) 6 ] 3− anion with the [Cu II (tn)] 2+ ion (tn = 1,3-diaminopropane) afford the compounds {[Cu II (tn)] 2 [Fe II (CN) 6 ]}3·[Na 3 Fe III (CN) 6 ]·12H 2 O (1) and {[Cu n (tn)] 2 [Fe II (CN) 6 ]}·KCl·5H 2 O (2). Despite the differences concerning their asymmetric units, both structures present strong similar features: in both structures, the Cu(II) ion presents a square-base pyramidal CuN 5 environment and each [Fe II (CN) 6 ] 4− anion is linked to six Cu(II) ions through its six N atoms leading to infinite [Cu II (tn)] 2 [Fe II (CN) 6 ] layers which can be viewed as 2-D layered arrangement generated by the defective cubane units Cu 4 Fe 3 involving Fe-CN…
Practical Syntheses of Terrylene Chromophores from Naphthalene and Perylene Building Blocks
2017
A facile and efficient method to synthesize terrylene imides, a unique class of chromophores, and their derivatives from commercially available naphthalene and perylene building blocks is reported. We developed an extremely efficient Suzuki/C-H-arylation coupling cascade with Pd2(dba)3/PCy3 (dba = dibenzylidenacetone, Cy = cyclohexyl) as the catalyst and highly soluble naphthalene derivatives as starting materials. This efficiency allows purification via precipitation and crystallization, avoiding time-consuming column chromatography. For the first time, the highly soluble 3,4,11,12-terrylene tetraester was prepared in gram scale with yields up to 75 % which thus becomes a versatile startin…
Interplay of hydrogen bonding and π–π interactions in the molecular complex of 2,6-lutidine N-oxide and water
2006
Abstract The crystal and molecular structure of 2,6-lutidine N-oxide monohydrate (1) has been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Each water molecule is acting as bridging ligand between the N→O moieties of two 2,6-lutidine N-oxide molecules through moderate strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding (O–H⋯O, O⋯O distances are 2.787(2) and 2.832 (2) A) giving rise to a one-dimensional (1D) polymeric helical chain. A two-dimensional (2D) layered network is then formed by self-assembly of 1D helical chains via strong π–π interactions of the aromatic rings (interplanar distances 3.385 A). The molecular structure of 1 is compared with that for the already reported molecular structures of 2-ace…
Structural Tuning and Conformational Stability of Aromatic Oligoamide Foldamers
2017
A series of aromatic oligoamide foldamers with two or three pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide units as their main folding motifs and varying aromatic building blocks as linkers have been synthetized to study the effects of the structural variation on the folding properties and conformational stability. Crystallographic studies showed that in the solid state the central linker unit either elongates the helices and more open S-shaped conformations, compresses the helices to more compact conformations or acts as a rigid spacer separating the pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide units, which for their part add the predictability of the conformational properties. Multidimensional NMR studies showed that, even in…
N,N′-Disubstituted Indigos as Readily Available Red-Light Photoswitches with Tunable Thermal Half-Lives
2017
Some rare indigo derivatives have been known for a long time to be photochromic upon irradiation with red light, which should be advantageous for many applications. However, the absence of strategies to tune their thermal half-lives by modular molecular design as well as the lack of proper synthetic methods to prepare a variety of such molecules from the parent indigo dye have so far precluded their use. In this work, several synthetic protocols for N-functionalization have been developed, and a variety of N-alkyl and N-aryl indigo derivatives have been prepared. By installation of electron-withdrawing substituents on the N-aryl moieties, the thermal stability of the Z-isomers could be enha…
Photoswitching of the antiferromagnetic coupling in an oxamato-based dicopper(ii) anthracenophane
2011
Thermally reversible photomagnetic (ON/OFF) switching behavior has been observed in a dinuclear oxamatocopper(ii) anthracenophane upon UV light irradiation and heating; the two CuII ions (SCu = 1/2) that are antiferromagnetically coupled in the dicopper(ii) metallacyclic precursor (ON state) become uncoupled in the corresponding [4+4] photocycloaddition product (OFF state), as substantiated from both experimental and theoretical studies. © 2011 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
Diels–Alder reaction on perylenediimides: synthesis and theoretical study of core-expanded diimides
2019
A one-step reaction for the fusion of aromatic rings to one or both bay areas of perylenediimides using benzynes is presented. Yields as high as 70% for naphthoperylenendiimide 2 and 80% for dibenzocoronenediimide 3 are obtained. The reaction is also carried out using substituted benzynes, heteroaromatic benzynes and substituted perylenediimides. A combined experimental/theoretical approach, based on measuring redox and absorption/emission properties and performing density functional theory calculations, indicates that increasing the π-skeleton of PDIs transversally leads to significant and unexpected changes in the electronic, redox and optical properties. The observed trends are rationali…
Planar Benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene Derivatives Decorated with Nitronyl and Imino Nitroxides
2018
Four weakly antiferromagnetic interacting biradicals of benzo[1,2- b:4,5- b']dithiophene (BDT) and BDT extended with two thiophenes (BDTTh2) linked with nitronyl and imino nitroxides (NN and IN) as BDT-NN, BDT-IN, BDTTh2-NN, and BDTTh2-IN were designed, synthesized, and characterized. Short intermolecular π-π distances were found (3.42 A) for BDT-NN, whereas larger ones were found for BDT-IN (3.54 A) and BDTTh2-NN (3.67 A), respectively. Intramolecular magnetic interaction ( Jintra,exp/ kB) of BDT-NN (-26 K) is much larger than for BDT-IN (-5.3 K), while it is reduced for the dithiophene-extended molecule BDTTh2-NN (-2.3 K). Intermolecular interactions ( zJinter,exp/ kB) of BDT-NN (-6.5 K) …
Late-Stage Modification of Electronic Properties of Antiaromatic and Diradicaloid Indeno[1,2-b]fluorene Analogues via Sulfur Oxidation
2020
The ability to alter optoelectronic and magnetic properties of molecules at a late stage in their preparation is in general a nontrivial feat. Here, we report the late-stage oxidation of benzothiop...
