APOKASC-2 catalog of Kepler evolved stars

2019

We present a catalog of stellar properties for a large sample of 6676 evolved stars with Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment spectroscopic parameters and Kepler asteroseismic data analyzed using five independent techniques. Our data include evolutionary state, surface gravity, mean density, mass, radius, age, and the spectroscopic and asteroseismic measurements used to derive them. We employ a new empirical approach for combining asteroseismic measurements from different methods, calibrating the inferred stellar parameters, and estimating uncertainties. With high statistical significance, we find that asteroseismic parameters inferred from the different pipelines have sys…

Towards asteroseismology of core-collapse supernovae with gravitational-wave observations – I. Cowling approximation

2017

Gravitational waves from core-collapse supernovae are produced by the excitation of different oscillation modes in the protoneutron star (PNS) and its surroundings, including the shock. In this work we study the relationship between the post-bounce oscillation spectrum of the PNS–shock system and the characteristic frequencies observed in gravitational-wave signals from core-collapse simulations. This is a fundamental first step in order to develop a procedure to infer astrophysical parameters of the PNS formed in core-collapse supernovae. Our method combines information from the oscillation spectrum of the PNS, obtained through linear perturbation analysis in general relativity of a backgr…

Blight of English Ivy (Hedera helix) caused by Sclerotium rolfsii in Sicily

2007

English ivy, Hedera helix L. (Araliaceae), an evergreen climbing vine is widely cultivated as an ornamental and foliage plant. In the summer of 2005, a severe blight of ivy plants trained as topiaries and grown in an open field was observed in a nursery near Giarre (eastern Sicily). Foliage of infected plants appeared lighter green and progressively turned bronze and withered. Eventually, the entire plant collapsed. Foliar symptoms were associated with basal stem and root rot. White, cottony mycelium and numerous sclerotia developed externally on the lower stem and on the soil around the affected plants. The disease was randomly distributed, affecting approximately 5% of plants in a stock …

Caractérisation des figures myéliniques associées à l'accumulation de lipides polaires induites par différents oxystérols cytotoxiques identifiés dan…

2006

Atherosclerosis is a complex and chronic arterial process which is characterized by a remodeling of the vascular wall, associated with inflammatory reactions, proliferation and cell death process, and with accumulation of oxidized lipids among which oxysterols (cholesterol oxidation products) which might play key roles in the initiation and development of atheromatous lesions. Our work performed on U937 and THP1 promonocytic cells, rat aorta embryonic A7R5 cells, and breast carcinoma MCF7 cells (caspase-3 deficient). Different oxysterols, present in large quantity in atheromatous lesions, were used: 7-cétocholestérol (7KC), 7Β-hydroxycholestérol, 25-hydroxycholestérol, cholestérol-5Α, 6Α-ep…

Modulation of dendritic cells and macrophages : implication in cancer and atherosclerosis

2010

During my thesis, I studied the cytotoxic function of dendritic cells (DC) from cancer patients and compared it to DC from healthy donors. Our results indicate that human monocyte-derived DC can acquire strong cytotoxic activity toward tumor cells after activation with low dose of LPS. The cytotoxic potential of DC derived from cancer patients was almost the same as the one generated from healthy donors. We identified the tumor cell killing mechanism which involves peroxynitrite release. After killing of cancer cells, DC are capable of engulfing dead tumor cell fragments and overexpress the costimulatory molecules necessary for T cell proliferation. A second study consisted in an analysis o…

Absence of muscarinic modulation of vasopressin release from the isolated rat neurohypophysis

1975

1. Isolated rat neurohypophyses were incubated in Locke solution at 37°C and the vasopressin output into the medium determined by bioassay. 2. Potassium chloride 60 mM caused a 9-fold increase in the rate of vasopressin release that was abolished when calcium chloride was omitted from the Locke solution. 3. Acetylcholine 5.5×10−4 M neither alone nor in the presence of atropine 2.9×10−6 M changed the “resting” release of vasopressin. 4. Neither acetylcholine 5.5×10−4 M nor oxotremorine 10−4 and 3×10−4 M altered the vasopressin release evoked by potassium chloride 60 mM. 5. In contrast to the peripheral adrenergic nerve fibres, the secretory terminal fibres of the neurohypophysis do not appea…

Institutional Autonomy and the Attractiveness of the European Higher Education Area – Facts or Tokenistic Discourse?

2012

In the discourse of the Bologna Process, the notion of competitiveness as the focal goal of Bologna Process, and university autonomy as one of its founding principles are consistently linked. Autonomy is framed as a precondition of competitiveness, while competitiveness is framed in terms of attractiveness of European higher education and higher education institutions. This paper examines their relationship, discussing whether there is ground for the repeated policy argument of their going hand in hand. Do the more attractive countries have higher autonomy, are the countries with higher autonomy more attractive? Or are these phenomena linked only in the simplified arguments of the policy di…

Evaluation of a new pooling strategy based on leukocyte count for rapid quantification of allele frequencies.

2007

Abstract Background: Allele frequencies of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) can be quantified from DNA pools. The conventional preparation of DNA pools requires DNA isolation and quantification for each blood sample. We hypothesized that pooling of whole blood samples according to their leukocyte count, which determines DNA content, would be as reliable as the conventional pooling method but much less tedious to perform. Methods: We collected 100 whole blood samples and measured the leukocyte count. Samples were frozen until further use. After thawing, pools were generated by combining aliquots containing an equal number of leukocytes. In parallel, DNA was extracted from another aliqu…

Multitasking in Driving as Optimal Adaptation Under Uncertainty

2021

Objective The objective was to better understand how people adapt multitasking behavior when circumstances in driving change and how safe versus unsafe behaviors emerge. Background Multitasking strategies in driving adapt to changes in the task environment, but the cognitive mechanisms of this adaptation are not well known. Missing is a unifying account to explain the joint contribution of task constraints, goals, cognitive capabilities, and beliefs about the driving environment. Method We model the driver’s decision to deploy visual attention as a stochastic sequential decision-making problem and propose hierarchical reinforcement learning as a computationally tractable solution to it. The…
