2H NMR Time Domain Analysis of Ultraslow Reorientations in Supercooled Liquids

A method for evaluating 2H NMR stimulated echo experiments in the time domain is presented. It exhibits a high sensitivity to molecular reorientation mechanisms for small angles. Reorientations with jump angles below 25degrees can be resolved with a precision of approximately 1degrees so that, e.g., rotational diffusion and finite jump angle mechanisms become distinguishable. The method, applicable to isotropic reorientation models, is thought to extend the domain of 2D exchange spectroscopy where the best resolution is obtained in the large angle range of anisotropic reorientational mechanisms. Experimental Determination of Four-Time Stimulated Echoes in Liquids, Colloidal Suspensions, and Crystals

Four-time stimulated echo experiments have been used to monitor the temporal evolution of the reorientation rates of deuterated molecules or colloidal suspensions. We present extended phase cycles for this seven-pulse experiment. In order to test its performance three vastly different materials are chosen. These include a crystal in which the molecules carry out well-defined 180 degrees flips and a supercooled liquid characterized by a distribution of jump angles centered around 10 degrees. As an example for rotational diffusion, data on a concentrated suspension of polystyrene spheres in a viscous medium are presented. Copyright 1998 Academic Press.

A search for neutron to mirror-neutron oscillations using the nEDM apparatus at PSI

It has been proposed that there could be a mirror copy of the standard model particles, restoring the parity symmetry in the weak interaction on the global level. Oscillations between a neutral standard model particle, such as the neutron, and its mirror counterpart could potentially answer various standing issues in physics today. Astrophysical studies and terrestrial experiments led by ultracold neutron storage measurements have investigated neutron to mirror-neutron oscillations and imposed constraints on the theoretical parameters. Electromagnetic transition probabilities in 130Ce

Abstract Lifetimes of excited nuclear states have been measured in 130Ce using the coincidence-plunger technique. The employed nuclear reaction was 98Mo(36S, 4n)130Ce at a beam energy of 150 MeV. The measurement has been performed at the NSF Daresbury using the ESSA 30 set-up. It was possible to determine lifetimes for the 4+ to 16+ states in 130Ce. The experimental B(E2) values could be well reproduced by calculations using the triaxial rotor model with β = 0.26 and γ = 21° as well as the rotation vibration model (β = 0.25).

AbstractOmmatidial rotation is one of the most important events for correct patterning of the Drosophila eye. Although several signaling pathways are involved in this process, few genes have been shown to specifically affect it. One of them is nemo (nmo), which encodes a MAP-like protein kinase that regulates the rate of rotation throughout the entire process, and serves as a link between core planar cell polarity (PCP) factors and the E-cadherin–β-catenin complex. Conservation of optical purity of amino acids: a principal problem in biochemical and proto-biochemical systems.

Dor L-amino acids, regardless of their state (peptide-bound or free, in the solid state or in aqueous solution), tend to racemize. In a living cell this racemization is usually compensated by specific degradation and replacement of the unwanted polypeptides that contain the wrong enantiomers. But a few long-lived proteins that are synthesized at or near birth are never replaced. Well investigated is the racemization of L-aspartic acid at a rate of 0.1 to 1.14 per cent per year in proteins from lenses and dentine.
