Global and Local Effects of Rotation: Observational Aspects

2011

In the paper we discussed the observational aspects of rotation in the Universe on different scales. We show dependence between the angular momentum of the structures and their size. The presented observational situation is that the galaxies, their pairs and compact groups have a non-vanishing angular momentum. In the structures of mass corresponding to groups of galaxies, this feature has not been found, while in the clusters and superclusters alignment of galaxy orientation has been actually found. Also we know that galaxies have net angular momentum due to the fact that we actually measure the rotation curves of galaxies. These facts lead to the conclusion that theories which connect gal…

Polarization shaping for unidirectional rotational motion of molecules.

2015

Control of the orientation of the angular momentum of linear molecules is demonstrated by means of laser polarization shaping. For this purpose, we combine two orthogonally polarized and partially time-overlapped femtosecond laser pulses so as to produce a spinning linear polarization which in turn induces unidirectional rotation of N2 molecules. The evolution of the rotational response is probed by a third laser beam that can be either linearly or circularly polarized. The physical observable is the frequency shift imparted to the probe beam as a manifestation of the angular Doppler effect. Our experimental results are confirmed by theoretical computations, which allow one to gain a deep p…

Discrete-Gauss states and the generation of focussing dark beams

2014

Discrete-Gauss states are a new class of gaussian solutions of the free Schr\"odinger equation owning discrete rotational symmetry. They are obtained by acting with a discrete deformation operator onto Laguerre-Gauss modes. We present a general analytical construction of these states and show the necessary and sufficient condition for them to host embedded dark beams structures. We unveil the intimate connection between discrete rotational symmetry, orbital angular momentum, and the generation of focussing dark beams. The distinguishing features of focussing dark beams are discussed. The potential applications of Discrete-Gauss states in advanced optical trapping and quantum information pro…

Field-free molecular alignment for probing collisional relaxation dynamics

2013

International audience; We report the experimental study of field-free molecular alignment in CO2 gas mixtures induced by intense femtosecond laser pulses in the presence of collisional processes. We demonstrate that the alignment signals exhibit specific features due to nontrivial collisional propensity rules that tend to preserve the orientation of the rotational angular momentum of the molecules. The analysis is performed with a quantum approach based on the modeling of rotational J- and M-dependent state-to-state transfer rates. The present work paves the way for strong-field spectroscopy of collisional dynamics.

Ab InitioCalculations and High-Resolution Spectroscopy of the Bending Pentad of SiH2D2in the 10–16 μm Region

1998

Abstract The SiH 2 D 2 asymmetric top has nine vibrational modes, five of them forming a pentad strongly perturbed by Coriolis interactions. High-level ab initio calculations of SiH 2 D 2 have been performed which yield numerous spectroscopic parameters related to the harmonic and anharmonic force fields. The bending pentad comprising ν 4 (A 1 ), ν 7 (B 1 ), ν 5 (A 2 ), ν 9 (B 2 ), and ν 3 (A 1 ) has been studied by high-resolution Fourier transform spectroscopy; the region 600–1050 cm −1 has been investigated with a resolution of ca. 4 × 10 −3 cm −1 . Raman BOXCARS spectroscopy has been used for the infrared inactive ν 5 band. The Raman apparatus function was 0.0054 cm −1 . Assignments of …

Axisymmetric solutions for a chemotaxis model of Multiple Sclerosis

2018

In this paper we study radially symmetric solutions for our recently proposed reaction–diffusion–chemotaxis model of Multiple Sclerosis. Through a weakly nonlinear expansion we classify the bifurcation at the onset and derive the amplitude equations ruling the formation of concentric demyelinating patterns which reproduce the concentric layers observed in Balò sclerosis and in the early phase of Multiple Sclerosis. We present numerical simulations which illustrate and fit the analytical results.

High-Resolution Jet-Cooled Spectroscopy of SF6: The ν2+ ν6Combination Band of32SF6and the ν3Band of the Rare Isotopomers

1998

The Fourier transform infrared spectrum of SF6 was recorded in a supersonic expansion jet of an SF6/argon mixture. The SF6:Ar seeding ratio was 2:3. The instrumental bandwidth was 0.005 cm-1. A globar source and an MCT detector were used. A rotational temperature of approximately 30 K was achieved. The nu2 + nu6 combination band of 32SF6 was analyzed using a modified version of the spherical top data system (STDS) programs developed in Dijon. A very good fit was obtained for this band with an rms of 0.0036 cm-1. The effective Hamiltonian was developed up to fourth order for the nu2 + nu6 part, to second order for the nu2 and ground state parts, and to first order for the nu6 part. Five hund…

Large‐Scale Vector Modes and the First CMB Temperature Multipoles

2008

Recent observations have pointed out various anomalies in some multipoles (small $\ell $) of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In this paper, it is proved that some of these anomalies could be explained in the framework of a modified concordance model, in which, there is an appropriate distribution of vector perturbations with very large spatial scales. Vector modes are associated with divergenceless (vortical) velocity fields. Here, the generation of these modes is not studied in detail (it can be done "a posteriori"); on the contrary, we directly look for the distributions of these vector modes which lead to both alignments of the second and third multipoles and a planar octopole. A …

Probing the internal solar magnetic field through g-modes

2006

The observation of g-mode candidates by the SoHO mission opens the possibility of probing the internal structure of the solar radiative zone (RZ) and the solar core more directly than possible via the use of the p-mode helioseismology data. We study the effect of rotation and RZ magnetic fields on g-mode frequencies. Using a self-consistent static MHD magnetic field model we show that a 1% g-mode frequency shift with respect to the Solar Seismic Model (SSeM) prediction, currently hinted in the GOLF data, can be obtained for magnetic fields as low as 300 kG, for current measured modes of radial order n=-20. On the other hand, we also argue that a similar shift for the case of the low order g…

On the maximum efficiency of the propeller mass-ejection mechanism

2007

Aims. We derive simple estimates of the maximum efficiency with which matter can be ejected by the propeller mechanism in disk-fed, rotating magnetic neutron stars. Some binary evolution scenarios envisage that this mechanism is responsible for expelling to infinity the mass inflowing at a low rate from the companion star, therefore limiting the total amount of mass that can be accreted by the neutron star. Methods. We demonstrate that, for typical neutron star parameters, a maximum of _{pro} < 5.7 (P_{-3})^{1/3} times more matter than accreted can be expelled through the propeller mechanism at the expenses of the neutron star rotational energy (P_{-3} is the NS spin period in unit of …
