Line positions and intensities in the band of ethylene near : An experimental and theoretical study

Abstract Recently, we built a tensorial formalism adapted to the spectroscopy of X2Y4 molecules. It is based on formalisms developed in Dijon for spherical-top molecules. This approach has the advantages to allow a systematic development of rovibrational interactions and to make global analyses easier to perform. We used this tool to carry out an analysis of the ν 12 band of 12C2H4 near 1450 cm - 1 , both in frequencies and intensities. 1240 line positions and 871 intensities, measured in a set of spectra recorded in Brussels, with global root mean square deviations of 1.6 × 10 - 4 cm - 1 and 1.88 % , respectively.

Bending of ferrofluid droplet in rotating magnetic field

Abstract This paper presents results concerning 2D ferrofluid droplet motion at high values of magnetic field and frequencies above a critical one with respect to droplet ability to follow field rotation. The boundary element method is used to solve 2D equations of a magnetic field and Stokes flow problems. If the viscosity of the ferrofluid is larger than that of the surrounding fluid, droplet exhibits bending, forming “S-shape”. Fluid flow inside the droplet is analyzed and the main stages of periodical rotation of a droplet are reported.

Diffusion in active magnetic colloids

Abstract Properties of active colloids of circle swimmers are reviewed. As a particular example of active magnetic colloids the magnetotactic bacteria under the action of a rotating magnetic field is considered. The relation for a diffusion coefficient due to the random switching of the direction of rotation of their rotary motors is derived on the basis of the master equation. The obtained relation is confirmed by the direct numerical simulation of random trajectory of a magnetotactic bacterium under the action of the Poisson type internal noise due to the random switching of rotary motors. A Hypothetical Effect of the Maxwell–Proca Electromagnetic Stresses on Galaxy Rotation Curves

Maxwell–Proca electrodynamics corresponding to finite photon mass causes a substantial change in the Maxwell stress tensor, and under certain circumstances, may cause electromagnetic stresses to act effectively as "negative pressure." This paper describes a model where this negative pressure imitates gravitational pull and may produce forces comparable to gravity and may even become dominant. The effect is associated with random magnetic fields with correlation lengths exceeding the photon Compton wavelength. X-ray and optical bursts and flares in YSOs: results from a 5-day XMM-Newton monitoring campaign of L1551

We present the results of a five-day monitoring campaign with XMM-Newton of six X-ray bright young stellar objects (YSOs) in the star-forming complex L1551 in Taurus. All stars present significant variability on the five-day time scale. Modulation of the light curve on time scales comparable with the star's rotational period appeared to be present in the case of one weak-lined T Tauri star. Significant spectral variations between the 2000 and the 2004 observations were detected in the (unresolved) classical T Tauri binary system XZ Tau: a hot plasma component which was present in the X-ray spectrum in 2000 had significantly weakened in 2004. Dependence of coronal X-ray emission on spot-induced brightness variations in cool main sequence stars

The maximum amplitude (A m a x ) of spot-induced brightness variations from long-term V-band photometry and the ratio L x /L ? o l between X-ray and bolometric luminosities are suitable indicators of the level of magnetic activity in the photosphere and in the corona of late-type stars, respectively. X-ray rotational modulation of a supersaturated star in IC 2391

We present evidence of X-ray rotational modulation on VXR45, a young fast rotator star, member of IC 2391. It is a dG9 spectral type star whose rotational period and X-ray luminosity make it a supersaturated star. Our X-ray observation, made with EPIC/PN on XMM-Newton, covers about two photometric rotational periods. The detection of rotational modulation implies the presence of structural inhomogeneities. Possible interpretations are presented and discussed.

Parametric excitation of bending deformations of a rod by periodic twist

A model of a semiflexible magnetic filament with magnetization frozen in the direction perpendicular to the tangent of its center line is formulated. It is shown that if the rod is magnetized at its ends in opposite directions, an AC magnetic field causes parametric excitation of bending deformations. Neutral curves of parametric excitation are calculated both analytically and numerically. The shapes arising upon parametric excitation of bending deformations are chiral. Periodic rotation of the chiral filament due to nonhomogeneous twist in a nonhomogeneous AC field causes its unidirectional motion.

The X-ray luminosity of solar-mass stars in the intermediate age open cluster NGC 752

AIMS. While observational evidence shows that most of the decline in a star's X-ray activity occurs between the age of the Hyades (~8 x 10^8 yrs) and that of the Sun, very little is known about the evolution of stellar activity between these ages. To gain information on the typical level of coronal activity at a star's intermediate age, we studied the X-ray emission from stars in the 1.9 Gyr old open cluster NGC 752. METHODS. We analysed a ~140 ks Chandra observation of NGC 752 and a ~50 ks XMM-Newton observation of the same cluster. 0022-2852; High-resolution stimulated inverse Raman spectroscopy has been applied to the study of collisional broadening, shifting, and line mixing for the O-o(J, N = 5) triplet line of the fundamental vibrational band of molecular oxygen. Accurate line broadening coefficients for the individual J components within the triplet have been measured for the first time and show a significant J dependence. The line broadening coefficients are larger than those previously obtained for unresolved pure rotational Raman lines. The additional broadening is expected to result from electronic spin relaxation.
