Dynamics of Uniaxial Hard Ellipsoids

2007

We study the dynamics of monodisperse hard ellipsoids via a new event-driven molecular dynamics algorithm as a function of volume fraction $\phi$ and aspect ratio $X_0$. We evaluate the translational $D_{trans}$ and the rotational $D_{rot}$ diffusion coefficient and the associated isodiffusivity lines in the $\phi-X_0$ plane. We observe a decoupling of the translational and rotational dynamics which generates an almost perpendicular crossing of the $D_{trans}$ and $D_{rot}$ isodiffusivity lines. While the self intermediate scattering function exhibits stretched relaxation, i.e. glassy dynamics, only for large $\phi$ and $X_0 \approx 1$, the second order orientational correlator $C_2(t)$ sho…

Geometry and time scale of the rotational dynamics in supercooled toluene

1998

Multidimensional deuteron NMR provides powerful tools for studying molecular reorientation in supercooled liquids. We present results on selectively deuterated toluene-${d}_{5},$ which may be one of the molecularly most simple van der Waals glass formers. From two-time correlation functions the time scale of reorientation was obtained slightly above the calorimetric glass transition temperature. The applied stimulated echo method provides a geometry parameter that, in analogy to $q$-dependent scattering experiments, allows one to investigate the geometry of the elementary rotational process. Continuous time random walk computer simulations were used for the interpretation of the data. It is…

Translational and rotational diffusion in supercooled orthoterphenyl close to the glass transition

1992

Self diffusion coefficients in supercooled orthoterphenyl (OTP) have been determined down toD t =3·10−14 m2s−1 using a1H-NMR technique applying static field gradients up to 53T m−1 In a range of more than two decades theD t values agree with those of photochromic tracer molecules of the same size determined by forced Rayleigh scattering down to the glass transition temperatureT g . A change of mechanism is found for translational diffusion atT c ≈1.2T g whereD t is proportional to the inverse shear viscosityη −1 atT>T c butD t ∼η ξ with ξ=0.75 atT<T c . Rotational correlation times determined by2H-NMR stimulated echo techniques in deuterated OTP remain proportinal toη −1 down toT g . Our re…

Symmetry, winding number, and topological charge of vortex solitons in discrete-symmetry media

2009

[EN] We determine the functional behavior near the discrete rotational symmetry axis of discrete vortices of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We show that these solutions present a central phase singularity whose charge is restricted by symmetry arguments. Consequently, we demonstrate that the existence of high-charged discrete vortices is related to the presence of other off-axis phase singularities, whose positions and charges are also restricted by symmetry arguments. To illustrate our theoretical results, we offer two numerical examples of high-charged discrete vortices in photonic crystal fibers showing hexagonal discrete rotational invariance

The 35-d modulation of the X-ray emission of Her X-1 in the framework of the SOD model: results of a three-dimensional SPH simulation

1994

Several models have been proposed to explain the 35-d X-ray periodicity observed in Her X-1. We present the results of six three-dimensional quasi-polytropic smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of the tilted, twisted accretion disc of Her X-1 carried out in the light of Roberts' slaved orienting disc model (SOD) with the intention of finding some limits to the inclination of the rotation axis of the secondary and to the value of the polytropic index γ. These results show that a γ value between 1.05 and 1.1 and an inclination angle φ of the order of 45° are the most suitable for enabling the SOD model to work in three-dimensional space. The simulated disc is rather small and th…

Numerical evolution of matter in dynamical axisymmetric black hole spacetimes

2000

We have developed a numerical code to study the evolution of self-gravitating matter in dynamic black hole axisymmetric spacetimes in general relativity. The matter fields are evolved with a high-resolution shock-capturing scheme that uses the characteristic information of the general relativistic hydrodynamic equations to build up a linearized Riemann solver. The spacetime is evolved with an axisymmetric ADM code designed to evolve a wormhole in full general relativity. We discuss the numerical and algorithmic issues related to the effective coupling of the hydrodynamical and spacetime pieces of the code, as well as the numerical methods and gauge conditions we use to evolve such spacetime…

The rotational gas-phase spectrum of trans- and cis-HSSOH at 100GHz

2009

Abstract We present the first pure rotational spectra of the two most stable conformers of oxatrisulfane, trans- and cis-HSSOH, in their vibrational ground state. For both conformers a-, b-, and c-type transitions have been recorded in the range from 75 to 120 GHz using an all solid-state spectrometer. More than 200 lines have been assigned for each conformer, most of them belonging to the r Q 2 - and the r Q 3 -branch of the perpendicular spectra. The least-squares fit analysis using a semirigid rotor Hamiltonian in S-reduction yields precise values for the ground-state rotational constants A 0 = 21 145.93422 ( 66 ) , B 0 = 4479.92301 ( 21 ) , C 0 = 3828.34269 ( 21 ) for cis-HSSOH, and A 0…

Auvby? survey for Ca II emission stars

1990

During the last two years auvbyβ photometric survey of 85 Ca II emission stars from the Mount Wilson program on stellar activity has been carried out at the Calar Alto Observatory (Almeria, Spain). We present preliminary results for theuvby and β calibrations. Some stars displaying anomalousc1 andm1 indices, with photometric or spectroscopic data from previous studies, are reported. A reddening study for the complete sample is given.

Radiation forces and the formation of planetary systems

1990

We briefly support on some new results about the influence of the rotation and finite size of a stellar radiation source on dust particle orbits, emphasizing the possibility of stable orbits, in the equatorial plane, for dust sizes near the radiation pressure limit.
