Squeezing induced by spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking

2009

In this communication we study in depth the phenomenon of quadrature squeezing generated via spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking discussed for the first time in [1]. The idea can be put in short as follows. Consider a degenerate optical parametric oscillator (DOPO) tuned to the first family of transverse modes at the signal frequency, and having perfectly spherical mirrors. When pumped above threshold with a Gaussian beam and within a classical description, it is easy to show that a TEM 10 mode with an arbitrary orientation (measured by θ at Fig. 1) emerges at the subharmonic, hence breaking the rotational symmetry of the system in the transverse plane. Quantum effects are then quite i…

The Influence of Particular Modes of Vibration

1986

When vibration stress occurs at the place of work, 1, 2, or 3 directions of the coordinate system related to man, or vectors of these axes, can be involved (Fig. 1). In such multiaxial vibration, the stress may predominate in one direction or may have similar magnitudes in all directions. In addition, rotational vibration about these axes may also take place (see section “Rotational Vibration,” p. 125).

Rotation of Molecules and Nuclear Spin Relaxation

1978

Nuclear spin relaxation has been developed as a standard method for studying molecular motions in liquids, solids, polymers, and—to a lesser extent—gases, staring with the pioneering work of Bloembergen, Purcell, and Pound [1]. Of the great variety of molecular motions possible (e.g., translations, rotations, vibrations) rotations are particularly important for nuclear spin relaxation. Conversely, nuclear spin relaxation can be especially successful if information about rotational motions is desired. In this case nuclear spin relaxation can yield quantitative information over an extraordinary wide range of characteristic frequencies, from about 1 Hz to 1014Hz. It shoud be noted that, typica…

A rapid H? change in X Persei

1993

A trend of decreasing Hα emission over a period of thirty minutes is apparent in a series of spectra of X Persei taken on 31 December, 1987. This change appears to be astrophysical in origin and it indicates an anomalous state for X Persei that may be linked to its transition from a Be star to a normal B star, which occurred sometime between March 1988 and November 1990.

High X-Ray Luminosity from Dynamo Stars

1981

In the present work we intend to show that a stellar dynamo mechanism can produce high X-ray luminosities and also give account for modulation periods of the order thousand seconds or larger.

A local picture associated with a triply degenerate vibrational mode: vibrational and rovibrational local states

1998

International audience; Abstract: A symmetrized basis adapted to the study of some vibrational excited states of spherical top molecules is proposed. This basis, consistent with the Cartesian picture associated with a three-dimensional mode, is then tested numerically through various XY6 and XY4 molecules. In addition, some simulations, made with 238UF6 and a simplified version of an effective Hamiltonian, clearly show that the method can be further extended through the construction of a symmetrized local rovibrational basis.

Induction mechanisms in a von Kármán swirling flows of liquid Gallium

2004

International audience; Using in situ magnetic field measurements, we study the induction mechanisms in a swirling flow of liquid Gallium generated inside a cylinder, in the gap between two coaxial rotating discs. The von Kármán flow generated in this manner has both helicity and differential rotation. Magnetic Reynolds numbers Rm up to 7 (based on the disc rim speed) are generated. We study the magnetic induction when an external field is applied successively along the axis, in the azimuthal direction or tranverse to the axis of rotation. In the first two cases, both the flow and the magnetic field are axisymmetric, and an effective mechanism of conversion from poloidal to toroidal field e…

High-resolution study of some doubly excited vibrational states of PH2D: the m1 + m2, m2 + m5, m2 + m3, and m2 + m6 bands

2004

Abstract The absorption bands ν 1 + ν 2 , ν 2 + ν 3 , and ν 2 + ν 6 of PH 2 D have been recorded for the first time using a high-resolution Bruker 120 HR interferometer, and rotationally analyzed. Some transitions belonging to the very weak band ν 2 + ν 5 and enhanced in intensity by strong interactions with the ν 1 + ν 2 band were also assigned. Sets of parameters obtained from the fit reproduce experimental line position of the bands ν 1 + ν 2 and ν 2 + ν 3 with about the experimental accuracy. The residuals of the ro-vibrational energies of the ν 2 + ν 6 band are about 10 times larger. Reasons for the poorer reproduction of the latter data are given.

Field-free molecular alignment of CO2 mixtures in presence of collisional relaxation

2008

The present work explores the extension of the concept of short-pulse-induced alignment to dissipative environments within quantum mechanical density matrix formalism (Liouville equation) from the weak to the strong field regime. This is illustrated within the example of the CO2 molecule in mixture with Ar and He, at room temperature, for which a steep decrease of the alignment is observed at moderate pressure because of the collisional relaxation. The field-free alignment is measured by a polarization technique where the degree of alignment is monitored in the time domain by measuring the resulting transient birefringence with a probe pulse Raman induced polarization spectroscopy (RIPS) Co…

The Sun as an X-ray star: Active region evolution, rotational modulation, and implications for stellar X-ray variability

2004

We study the contribution of an active region and its core to the luminosity and the spectrum of the Sun in the X-ray band and to the relevant solar emission measure vs. temperature distribution, EM(T). We also study the relevant changes in the course of four solar rotations, and the solar rotational modulation due to this active region, the only one present at that time. To this end, we have used a large sample of full-disk Yohkoh/SXT observations taken between July and October 1996, covering most of the active region evolution. From the Yohkoh/SXT data we have synthesized the X-ray spectra of the whole solar corona, and the focal plane data as they would be collected with Rosat/PSPC, XMM-…
