The international phase 4 validation study of the EORTC QLQ-SWB32: A stand-alone measure of spiritual well-being for people receiving palliative care…
2017
The EORTC Quality of Life Group has just completed the final phase (field‐testing and validation) of an international project to develop a stand‐alone measure of spiritual well‐being (SWB) for palliative cancer patients. Participants (n = 451)—from 14 countries on four continents; 54% female; 188 Christian; 50 Muslim; 156 with no religion—completed a provisional 36‐item measure of SWB plus the EORTC QLQ‐C15‐PAL (PAL), then took part in a structured debriefing interview. All items showed good score distribution across response categories. We assessed scale structure using principal component analysis and Rasch analysis, and explored construct validity, and convergent/divergent validity with …
Functional pain in hospitalised and school children
2012
Aim. Aim of the study was to recognise the role of psychological disagreement in children and adolescents suffering from functional pain. Methods. Two groups of children, adolescents and their parents were interviewed: group H (hospitalized patients), group S (students, at school). Suitable investigations excluded organic lesions. The following data were analysed: 1) presence of pain in relation with: i) sex and age; ii) relation with parents, brothers, other relatives, schoolfellows; 2) efficacy of possible treatments. Results. Group H: 194 patients, median age 10 years; 134 referred pain: 62 out of 92 males and 72 out of 102 females; location of pain: abdomen, limbs, head, back. Family di…
The Glomerular Lesions in Endotheliotropic Hemolytic Nephroangiopathy (Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, Malignant Nephrosclerosis, Post Partal Renal Insuff…
1982
The term "Endotheliotropic Hemolytic Nephroangiopathy" (EHN) comprises various clinically or pathomorphologically defined disease states with severe renal lesions (e.g. hemolytic uremic syndrome, malignant nephrosclerosis, post partum renal insufficiency) which, to date, have been considered as different entities. We attempted to assign accompanying glomerular changes based upon light and electron microscopy to the above mentioned clinical pictures and their various stages. The accordingly classified glomerular lesions (G1--G3 and Ga) are of critical importance in pathohistological differential diagnosis. Since it is assumed that fibrin is a causing event in the pathogenesis of the vascular…
Nursing staff interactions during the older residents' transition into long-term care facility in a nursing home in rural Norway: an ethnographic stu…
2015
Background: Future challenges in many countries are the recruitment of competent staff in long-term care facilities, and the use of unlicensed staff. Our study describes and explores staff interactions in a long-term care facility, which may facilitate or impede healthy transition processes for older residents in transition. Methods: An ethnographic study based on fieldwork following ten older residents admission day and their initial week in the long-term care facility, seventeen individual semi-structured interviews with different nursing staff categories and the leader of the institution, and reading of relevant documents. Results: The interaction among all staff categories influenced th…
Validation of the Italian version of the Burn Specific Health Scale-Brief
2014
Introduction A growing awareness of psychological and functional impairment due to burns have led to the development of specific instruments to evaluate Quality of Life in this population, such as the Burn Specific Health Scale - Brief (BSHS-B), whose psychometric properties have been consistently verified. The aim of this study was to translate the BSHS-B into Italian and to investigate its reliability and validity. Methods Translation procedures were carried out according to accepted standards. Internal reliability was assessed using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Concurrent validity was evaluated through correlations between the BSHS-B and the Short-Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36), the Self…
The Added Value of Studying Embodied Responses in Couple Therapy Research: A Case Study.
2018
This article reports on the added value of embodied responses identified through sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity in couple therapy research. It focuses on moments of change and the timing of therapeutic interventions or therapeutic moves in a couple therapy session. The data for this single-case study comprise couple therapy process videotapes recorded in a multi-camera setting, and measurements of participants' SNS activity. The voluntary participants were a marital couple in their late thirties and two middle-aged male psychotherapists. The division into topic segments showed how the key issue of seeking help, which was found to comprise three separate components, was repeatedly…
Teachers’ experiences of adolescents’ pain in everyday life: a qualitative study
2015
Objectives More adolescents report pain now than previously. In Norway, episodic pain problems have been reported by 60% of children and adolescents aged 8–18 years, with 21% reporting duration of pain of more than 3 months. Since adolescents spend much time at school, the attitude and behaviour of teachers play important roles regarding the experience of pain felt by adolescents in everyday life. Yet research on how teachers perceive the pain experienced by adolescents in a school setting is limited. We therefore seek to gain insight to teachers’ classroom experiences with (1) adolescent's self-reported pain symptoms; (2) adolescents management of their pain and (3) how to help adolescents…
Familial hypobetalipoproteinemia due to apolipoprotein B R463W mutation causes intestinal fat accumulation and low postprandial lipemia
2008
Abstract Objective Familial hypobetalipoproteinemia (FHBL) is characterized by inherited low plasma levels of apolipoprotein B (apoB)-containing lipoproteins. In this paper we investigated whether the already described APOB R463W missense mutation, a FHBL mutation able to impair the activity of microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP), may cause intestinal fat accumulation and reduced postprandial lipemia. Methods Four out of five probands harboring APOB R463W mutation were compared with six healthy controls and six patients with celiac disease (CD). An oral fat load supplemented with retinyl palmitate (RP) was administered and a gastro-duodenal endoscopy with biopsy was performed. Re…
A case-control study on lip cancer risk factors in Ragusa (Sicily).
1984
Incidence rates of lip cancer in males in Ragusa (Sicily) are amongst the highest in Europe [age-standardized rate (world) for 1980-82: 7.5 per 100,000]. A case-control study was conducted on 53 male cases and 106 controls matched for sex, age (+/- 2 1/2 years), residence and hospital from which cases had been drawn. Individual interviews were carried out for the evaluation of ethnic, environmental, pathologic and occupational risk factors. Lip cancer was significantly associated with: fair, brown, or red hair (relative odds = 2.3), blue eyes (r.o. = 5.3), fair skin (r.o. = 8.0), sensitivity to sunburns (r.o. = 4.1), working outdoors (r.o. = 4.9), coexistence of non-specific lesions of expo…
