Nonlinear active micro-rheology in a glass-forming soft-sphere mixture.

2013

We present extensive molecular dynamics computer simulations of a glass-forming Yukawa mixture, investigating the nonlinear response of a single particle that is pulled through the system by a constant force. Structural changes around the pulled particle are analyzed by pair correlation functions, measured in the deeply supercooled state of the system. A regime of intermediate force strengths is found where the structural changes around the pulled particle are small, although its steady-state velocity shows a strong nonlinear response. This nonlinear response regime is characterized by a force-temperature superposition principle of a Peclet number and anisotropic diffusive behavior. In the …

THEORETISCHE UNTERSUCHUNG UBER DIE MEHRFACHAUFSTELLUNG VON GEOPHONEN*

1958

The receiving of seismic waves by multiple geophones (geophone-group) is described by a system of coupled differential equations considering only effective resistances. For so-called symmetrical connections of the geophone-group which are used in practice nearly in all cases, a method can be given for solving this system of differential equations. The solutions so derived are valid for seismic waves of any shape. The calculation takes into account the coupling of the geophones as well as the building-up transient oscillations. A suitable measure of superposition is defined, based on the energy transferred during the receiving of the seismic waves. By this means effects similar to interferen…

Single-step arbitrary control of mechanical quantum states in ultrastrong optomechanics

2015

We describe how ultrastrong interactions in optomechanical systems can be used to force the system ground state to evolve into an arbitrary quantum state of mechanical motion in a completely controlled and deterministic manner. If the target quantum state is a superposition of $N$ Fock states, it can be obtained by applying in single-step $N$ classical optical signals of different frequencies for a common time interval. This protocol can be applied to various strongly interacting quantum systems as trapped ions beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime and cavity QED into the ultrastrong coupling regime.

Some aspects of the nonperturbative renormalization of the phi^4 model

2007

A nonperturbative renormalization of the phi^4 model is considered. First we integrate out only a single pair of conjugated modes with wave vectors +/- q. Then we are looking for the RG equation which would describe the transformation of the Hamiltonian under the integration over a shell Lambda - d Lambda < k < Lambda, where d Lambda -> 0. We show that the known Wegner--Houghton equation is consistent with the assumption of a simple superposition of the integration results for +/- q. The renormalized action can be expanded in powers of the phi^4 coupling constant u in the high temperature phase at u -> 0. We compare the expansion coefficients with those exactly calculated by the…

What can be learned from the rotational motion of single molecules in a polymer melt near the glass transition?

2007

We develop a framework for the interpretation of single-molecule (SM) spectroscopy experiments of probe dynamics in a complex glass-forming system. Specifically, from molecular dynamics simulations of a single probe molecule in a coarse-grained model of a polymer melt, we show the emergence of sudden large angular reorientations (SLARs) of the SM as the mode coupling critical temperature is closely approached. The large angular jumps are intimately related to meta-basin transitions in the potential energy landscape of the investigated system and cause the appearance of stretched exponential relaxations of various rotational observables, reported in the SM literature as dynamic heterogeneity…

Surface waves in solar granulation observed with {\sc Sunrise}

2010

Solar oscillations are expected to be excited by turbulent flows in the intergranular lanes near the solar surface. Time series recorded by the IMaX instrument aboard the {\sc Sunrise} observatory reveal solar oscillations at high resolution, which allow studying the properties of oscillations with short wavelengths. We analyze two times series with synchronous recordings of Doppler velocity and continuum intensity images with durations of 32\thinspace min and 23\thinspace min, resp., recorded close to the disk center of the Sun to study the propagation and excitation of solar acoustic oscillations. In the Doppler velocity data, both the standing acoustic waves and the short-lived, high-deg…

A physically based connection between fractional calculus and fractal geometry

2014

We show a relation between fractional calculus and fractals, based only on physical and geometrical considerations. The link has been found in the physical origins of the power-laws, ruling the evolution of many natural phenomena, whose long memory and hereditary properties are mathematically modelled by differential operators of non integer order. Dealing with the relevant example of a viscous fluid seeping through a fractal shaped porous medium, we show that, once a physical phenomenon or process takes place on an underlying fractal geometry, then a power-law naturally comes up in ruling its evolution, whose order is related to the anomalous dimension of such geometry, as well as to the m…

Design of a System to Compose 50 Hz Alternating and Static Magnetic Field From Induction Coil and Permanent Magnets

2020

We demonstrate a technical solution to achieve an intense 50 Hz alternating magnetic field and a static magnetic field made by a permanent magnet at the same place. A compact coil built using the Bitter coil concept is customized to support alternating current, thus creating an alternating magnetic field. A complementary permanent magnet assembly is built around it to achieve the superposition of both fields along the axis of symmetry. Results from the experimental model are compared to both numerical and analytical models.

Efficient on-axis SLM engineering of optical vector modes

2020

Abstract This work presents a method for the efficient experimental generation of arbitrary polarized vector beam modes. The optical system employs two liquid-crystal on silicon (LCOS) spatial light modulators (SLM) in a common path architecture, avoiding the use of beam-splitters. Each SLM displays a different phase-only mask, each one encoding a different pattern onto two orthogonal linear polarization components of the input beam. These phase-only masks are designed using a recently proposed random technique to encode complex amplitude values. This encoding technique reconstructs the complex function on-axis, thus avoiding incorporating carrier phases. By addressing such properly designe…

Light polarization measurements in tests of macrorealism

2018

According to the world view of macrorealism, the properties of a given system exist prior to and independent of measurement, which is incompatible with quantum mechanics. Leggett and Garg put forward a practical criterion capable of identifying violations of macrorealism, and so far experiments performed on microscopic and mesoscopic systems have always ruled out in favor of quantum mechanics. However, a macrorealist can always assign the cause of such violations to the perturbation that measurements effect on such small systems, and hence a definitive test would require using non-invasive measurements, preferably on macroscopic objects, where such measurements seem more plausible. However,…
