Fenomenologinen selvitys teknologian ja ruumiin suhteesta : ruumiin laajentaminen teknologian avulla
2014
2015
The Taboo of the Perverse Dying Body
2014
A human being is continuously living towards death within a mortal body that is dying little by little, second after second. In the gloss of popular media, the taboo reality of this stain of mortality is hidden by a diversion, which is created by the multiple pornographies of visual culture: the pornography of perfect bodies and the pornography of violent death. No longer invisible or ‘unspeakable’, the taboo body has been appropriated to serve a function in the mainstream didactics. Both the lusus naturae of natural bodies and the decay of sickness and death are squeezed into such roles in the postmodern visual narrative that the mortality of the human being appears unlikely and accidental…

Discovering the embodiment of the group fitness instructor : case study of group fitness instructors of Fysioline Fressi
2017
Group fitness instructors are often portrayed as physically toned and fit with healthy lifestyles overall. The aim of a group fitness class is to help participants exercise in a desired manner with motivational coaching. Instructing a class requires a combination of coordination, anticipation and moving in-line with the music. The instructor is often situated in front of the class, making the body as visible as possible. The body is also the instructor’s single most important tool at work, which is used to show movements and non-verbal messages. The complexity of the task creates an interesting platform to research the experience of embodiment and hopefully offer insight in to what the body…

Comparison of body segment models for female high jumpers utilising DXA images
2022
In motion analysis of sport competitions, the question is often about the most convenient choice for defining the segment endpoints when no visible landmarks can be used. The purpose of the present study was to determine the location of the body centre of mass (CoM) of female high jumpers by using a high accuracy reaction board and two different segment models: Dempster, 1955, de Leva, 1996. Digitising the bony landmarks from the images of dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and overhead digital camera were used to compare the digitising accuracy. The location of the CoM determined by a reaction board was 55.88 ± 0.52 % of subjects’ body height. The segment model of Dempster digitized fr…
Techno-human : expedition of altered human by technology from science-fiction cinema to the post-industrial world
2011
This thesis defines techno-human as a new notion to describe altered human body and identity by technology following its expedition from the fictional world of science-fiction cinema to non-fictional world of post-industrial society. Science-fiction cinema has always significant role as an art form to define and discuss the future of interaction between human and technology. In 1993, Scott Bukatman has studied this reformed human figure in SF cinema with the notion of terminal body and identity, after ten years, Giuseppe O. Longo (2003) use the term homo-technologicus define the human being of the 21st Century. In addition, today, almost ten years later than Longo, combining the study of Bu…
Exercising exclusions: Space, visibility, and monitoring of the exercising fat female body
2019
The author’s aim is to inspect the position of the fat (female) body in the field of exercise. Specifically, the author is interested in fat women’s experiences of their treatment while exercising in public, and argues that, in particular, public spaces for exercise, such as gyms and swimming pools, are currently discursively and concretely constructed as “exclusive” spaces for the normative bodied. Bodies that are deemed non-normative, such as fat bodies, are often made either invisible or intolerable in the discourse of physical activity and exercise. Consequently, public spaces for exercise such as gyms or swimming pools are seen as out of bounds for non-normative bodies and this is refl…
