An Upper Mississippian echinoderm microfauna from the Genicera Formation of northern León (Carboniferous, Cantabrian Mountains, N Spain)

For the first time an echinoderm microfauna is recorded from the cephalopod limestone facies (‘griotte facies’) of the lower Carboniferous (Mississippian) Genicera Fm. (Alba Fm.). The formation is widespread in the Cantabrian Mountains in NW Spain, but the ossicles are from some sections in the surroundings of the Bernesga valley in northern León. They have been derived from insoluble acetic acid residues from samples of the upper and especially of the uppermost part of the formation (Canalón Mb. and Millaró Beds). In the Ouled Abdoun sedimentary basin (Morocco), the phosphatic series is composed of regular interbedded phosphatic and marly limestone layers. Exploitation of the phosphate in some deposits in this basin collides frequently with problems bound to the existence, in the phosphatic series, of disturbed areas (sterile bodies) qualified as derangements by the mining engineers of the Office Cherifian Phosphate Group (OCP). The study reports on a chariot tomb excavated in 1985 at Les Craises in Molinons (Yonne). Set in an adventitious position in the midst of a monument with three quadrangular enclosures, the grave was of an adult of undetermined sex. Despite later pillaging, the goods found in this aristocratic tomb permit a dating to the second quarter of the 5th century BC, and an unusual cultural attribution, on the frontier in the Parisian Basin between the Jura culture to the south and the Marne-Moselle culture to the north.

Atrazine, one of the most used herbicide to control the development of weeds in crop, has led to the contamination of the environment. Repeated exposure to this herbicide resulted in the emergence of microbial populations able to degrade atrazine and to use it as a nitrogen source for its growth. These microbial populations are responsible for accelerated biodegradation of atrazine (BDA), a key ecosystemic service diminishing the persistence of this herbicide in the environment. The aim of this PhD work was to study genetic and physiological mechanisms responsible for functioning and improving of this ecosystemic service.
