Analysis of cardiac and pulmonary complication probabilities after radiation therapy for patients with early-stage breast cancer
2009
Objective. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the radiobiological implications of clinical use of respiratory-gated techniques for postoperative radiation therapy of early-stage left-sided breast cancer after breast-conserving surgery. Material and methods. Radiation therapy treatment plans of 80 patients with early-stage breast cancer (stage I–II), receiving whole breast irradiation after breast-conserving therapy, were analyzed. The control group consisting of 47 patients received standard radiation therapy, and the respiratory-gated group consisting of 33 patients received deep inspiration-gated radiation therapy. Normal tissue complication probabilities (NTCP) for cardiac mortali…
Short Message Service (SMS)-based strategy to improve antipsychotic adherence in schizophrenia
2011
ObjectivePoor adherence to antipsychotic treatment is a well-recognized challenge among patients with schizophrenia and is associated with increased morbidity and consumption of health care resources. We evaluated the effect of daily Short Message Service (SMS) reminders on patients’ adherence to antipsychotic medication in schizophrenia.MethodsClinically stabilized outpatients with schizophrenia and considered to be poor adherent (at least one affirmative answer of Morisky-Green questionnaire -MAQ) to antipsychotic monotherapy were included in a multicenter, randomized, open-label, controlled trial. Participants were randomized to receive a daily SMS reminder on their cell phone to take the…
Imaging of Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Complications: Comparison of Whole Body Low-Dose Computed Tomography and Radiographic Shunt Series.
2016
OBJECTIVE To determine diagnostic value and radiation exposure of low-dose computed tomography (LD-CT) compared to radiographic shunt series (SS) for the detection of ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt complications. METHODS Fourteen VP shunts were implanted in 7 swine cadavers. Mechanical complications were induced in 50% of VP shunts. Low-dose CT (80 kVp, 10 mAs, Pitch = 1.5) and SS were acquired. Dose area product (DAP) and effective doses for SS and LD-CT were collected. Scoring of diagnostic confidence and blinded readings of SS and CT data were performed. RESULTS The sensitivity of LD-CT was high (0.97; 95% confidence interval, 0.91-1.00) with excellent interobserver agreement (κ = 0.88)…
Radiation exposure in vascular angiographic procedures.
2012
Abstract Purpose To evaluate dose reduction in vascular angiographic procedures by using fluoroscopy capture instead of digital subtraction angiography frames for documentation. Materials and Methods A total of 764 consecutive vascular interventional procedures performed over a period of 1 year were retrospectively analyzed with respect to the fluoroscopy time and the resulting dose–area product (DAP), the DAP of the radiographic frames, and the overall DAP. Results A total of 70% of the total DAP was a result of the acquisition of radiographic frames, leaving only 30% being applied by fluoroscopy. Conclusions Fluoroscopy capture should be used for documentation whenever possible. A registr…
GEC-ESTRO ACROP recommendations on calibration and traceability of LE-LDR photon-emitting brachytherapy sources at the hospital level
2019
Prostate brachytherapy treatment using permanent implantation of low-energy (LE) low-dose rate (LDR) sources is successfully and widely applied in Europe. In addition, seeds are used in other tumour sites, such as ophthalmic tumours, implanted temporarily. The calibration issues for LE-LDR photon emitting sources are specific and different from other sources used in brachytherapy. In this report, the BRAPHYQS (BRAchytherapy PHYsics Quality assurance System) working group of GEC-ESTRO, has developed the present recommendations to assure harmonized and high-quality seed calibration in European clinics. There are practical aspects for which a clarification/procedure is needed, including aspect…
Direct Oral Anticoagulants in the Setting of Catheter Ablation of Atrial Fibrillation: State of art
2021
Atrial fibrillation (AF) represents the arrhythmia of greatest clinical impact and catheter ablation of AF (CAAF) has become the most effective strategy for rhythm control in selected patients. Therefore, appropriate anticoagulation strategies are of paramount importance for patients undergoing CAAF, especially those at high risk, such those with high CHA2DS2VASc scores. Optimal management of anticoagulation before, during, and after CAAF is crucial. Several studies have evaluated the use of different anticoagulation strategies in the periprocedural period. Randomized controlled trial seem to suggest that in patients undergoing CAAF, uninterrupted (or minimally interrupted) direct oral anti…
The effectiveness of therapeutic massage in treating back pain – a case study
2020
Background: Spinal pain is a common problem in developed societies. In recent years, more and more people have been found to complain about spinal pain. Therefore, it would seem that back pain remains a major problem, a burden for the patient, the family, and the economy. If the pain is severe, it can cause difficulties with performing even the most basic activities of everyday life. The quest for methods to reduce this complaint may contribute to improving the quality of life for many people. One of the more commonly chosen forms of therapy for back pain is therapeutic massage. Massage therapy has a long history with back pain treatment and has been found to produce various beneficial effe…
Pharmacokinetics of new oral anticoagulants: implications for use in routine care
2018
Introduction: Since 2008, new oral anticoagulants (NOACs) have been approved for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients receiving hip or knee replacement surgery, prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF), treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and pulmonary embolism (PE). Premarketing randomized clinical trials (RCTs) of NOACs demonstrated their non-inferiority in terms of efficacy vs. warfarin (traditional oral anticoagulant–TOA), with lower risk of serious adverse drug reactions, especially cerebral hemorrhages. In clinical practice, pharmacokinetic aspects of NOACs have to be carefully taken into account to …
Mediju lietojuma paradumi un motivācija pusaudžu auditorijā Rīgas vidusskolās
2018
