Il nespolo del Giappone (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl) si è diffuso in Sicilia nella metà del XIX secolo a partire dalla conca d’Oro, la piana che circonda la città di Palermo, oggi in buona parte urbanizzata. I frutteti tradizionali della conca d’Oro sono caratterizzati da una forte promiscuità e da una stratificazione in più strati delle chiome delle diverse specie di alberi. Questa stratificazione è il risultato della sovrapposizione di più colture e in particolare è dipesa dalla diffusione dei nespoli del Giappone tra gli agrumi, spesso decimati dalle fitopatie.
