Care Workers’ Readiness for Robotization : Identifying Psychological and Socio-Demographic Determinants
2020
Successful implementation of robots in welfare services requires that the staff approves of them as a part of daily work tasks. In this study, we identified psychological and socio-demographic determinants associated with readiness for robotization among professional Finnish care-workers. National survey data were collected from professional care workers (n = 3800) between October and November 2016. Random samples were drawn from the member registers of two Finnish trade unions. The data were analyzed with regression models for respondents with and without firsthand experience with robots. The models explained 34–39% of the variance in the readiness for robotization. The readiness was posit…
Getting into the Same Boat – Enabling the Realization of the Disabled Child’s Agency in Adult–Child Play Interaction
2021
The purpose of this study was to find out how an adult can enable or hinder the realization of a disabled child’s agency in play interaction. We focused on the child’s play invitations, which were constructed as dispreferred by the adult. The data consisted of nine videotaped playing situations with five nurses and five disabled children in a children’s neurological ward. The microanalysis with interventionist applied conversation analysis focused on one playing situation between one nurse and one three-year-old boy with no spoken language. The nurse responded to the child’s play invitations constructed as dispreferred by her in three different ways. Two of them were about trying to control…
Honouring the opening: Unfolding the rich ground between the philosophical thinking of Martin Heidegger and practice-based empirical work
2021
The aim of this article is to bring philosophical thinking closer to practice-based empirical work. Using Martin Heidegger’s philosophy, it offers a bridge between these two worlds, attempting to provide philosophical depth to the findings of a hermeneutic phenomenological study. This process unfolded through the appearance of three intertwined, potential, meaningful modes of being in the lifeworld: space as a condition for being and being for worlding the world; temporal and spatial self-being, the existence of multiple selves in time and space; and suffering and thriving as modes of being. The article extends the dialogue and concludes with key reflections and insight for research practic…
Jaetun johtajuuden näkökulma päivystyksessä tapahtuvaan työvuorokohtaiseen johtamiseen : sairaanhoitajien käsityksiä johtajuudesta, roolista ja toimi…
2017
Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää vastuuhoitajien käsityksiä jaetusta johtajuudesta ja rooliin liittyvästä toimijuudesta. Tutkimukseen osallistuneet sairaanhoitajat työskentelivät sairaalan päivystysyksikön vastuuhoitajajärjestelmässä. Vastuuhoitajana toimiva sairaanhoitaja työskentelee työvuorokohtaisesti työnjohtajana. Järjestelmää kehittäessä johtajuutta, valtaa ja vastuuta on jaettu työtehtävien muutoksen myötä. Tämä on samalla tuonut muutoksia vastuuhoitajarooliin, jota kuvataan käsitteellä roolitoimijuus. Tutkimus on toteutettu laadullisilla tutkimusmenetelmillä. Tutkimuksen aineisto koostuu 16 vastuuhoitajajärjestelmän parissa työskentele…

Work Coordination as a Social Interaction Process in Nursing Staff Meetings
2016
Work coordination, which here refers to organizing, planning, discussing, and negotiating work, is done through social interaction. Because coordination is essential to work quality and well-being at work, it is important to understand the processes that construct work coordination. This study aims to understand work coordination as a social interaction process by analyzing social interaction in nursing staff meetings of a Finnish hospital. Observations and approaches of inductive and descriptive qualitative analysis were used to examine eight sequential nursing staff meetings that took place in 2012. The results indicate that work coordination consisted of sense-making information, sense-m…
Turvallisuutta ja sopusointua vai jännitystä ja valtaa : tutkimus sairaanhoitaja- ja terveydenhoitajaopiskelijoiden yrittäjyys- ja muista arvoista
2003
The dissertation, ‘Security and harmony or thrills and power’, explores the values of nurses and nursing students from the theoretical perspectives of Schwartz and Rokeach. The dissertation also examines the values students use to characterise entrepreneurship, as well as the positioning of these values in the dimensions proposed by Schwartz’s value theory. In the functionalist mode, this study views entrepreneurship as a survival tendency. In addressing the economic challenges related to entrepreneurship, the study accounts for both entrepreneurial action and the feasibility of founding a company. As in most public administration fields, entrepreneurship is also topical in the health secto…
Organisational and individual resources as antecedents of older nursing professionals’ organisational commitment : Investigating the mediating effect…

Design To test a set of hypotheses, cross-sectional survey data (n = 396) were used. Data were analysed using correlation analysis and partial least-squares structural equation modelling. STROBE Statement for cross-sectional studies has been followed in this study. Results The results exhibite…
Nurse-led counseling for coronary artery disease patients : A 1-year follow-up study
2021
Nurse‐led counseling and systematic follow‐up has been shown to reduce cardiovascular risk factor levels. The study aim was to investigate if cardiovascular risk factor levels could be reduced in patients with coronary artery disease with a nurse‐led intervention and to report patients’ evaluations of nurse‐led counseling. The study design was a real‐life longitudinal follow‐up counseling intervention. Data were collected from November 2017 to May 2020. The nurse‐led intervention and patients’ follow‐up time was one year. Of the 78 patients recruited, 74 completed the study. The most significant findings were in the levels of total cholesterol, low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol and trigly…
The effects of combining kangaroo care and parental singing on premature infants' and parents' wellbeing and development of parent-infant relationship
2014
After experiencing premature birth, fragile infants have to spend weeks and even months on the ward because of their medical needs. This can be stressful both for parents and infants and increase the risk of early interaction problems and difficulty in bonding. In this qualitative study I was interested to find out what kinds of experiences parents had with parental singing during kangaroo care. I was also interested in examining the nursing staff’s attitudes, observations and thoughts about using music on the ward. I conducted my study within a Kangaroo Families study on the L2 ward at Jorvi hospital, Espoo. My study consists of interviews from 4 mothers that participated in the Kangaroo F…
