Abstract Motivation The BioTIME database contains raw data on species identities and abundances in ecological assemblages through time. These data enable users to calculate temporal trends in biodiversity within and amongst assemblages using a broad range of metrics. BioTIME is being developed as a community-led open-source database of biodiversity time series. Attention Check Items and Instructions in Online Surveys: Boon or Bane for Data Quality?

In this paper, we examine rates of careless responding and reactions to detection methods (i.e., attention check items and instructions) in an experimental setting based on two different samples. First, we use a quota sample (with monetary incentive), a central data source for internet-based surveys in sociological and political research. Second, we include a voluntary opt-in panel (without monetary incentive) well suited for conducting survey experiments (e.g., factorial surveys). New optical paper sensor for in situ measurement of hydrogen sulphide in waters and atmospheres

A novel and low-cost colorimetric sensor for the determination of hydrogen sulphide in environmental samples has been developed. This sensor is based on the immobilization of the reagent N,N-Dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine and FeCl3 in paper support, in which the H2S is adsorbed in order to give rise to the formation of methylene blue as reaction product. A new passive sampler based on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) layflat tube filled with chrome shavings from tannery waste residues was evaluated to determine volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor and outdoor areas. VOCs were directly determined by head space-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS) without any pretreatment of the sampler and avoiding the use of solvents. Limit of detection values ranging from 20 to 75 ng sampler−1and good repeatability values were obtained for VOCs under study with relative standard deviation values from 2.8 to 9.6% except for carbon disulfide for which it was 22.5%. Ab-initio structure analysis by electron diffraction is hampered by two major problems: insufficient number of reflections sampled and an intensity alteration by dynamical scattering contribution or beam damage. Thus, in recent years the principles of automated diffraction tomography (ADT) allowing systematic reciprocal space sampling and automated data analysis were developed. Here the basic ideas of ADT and its general applicability will be discussed along with some examples of solved structures.
