Extracting Conditionally Heteroskedastic Components using Independent Component Analysis

In the independent component model, the multivariate data are assumed to be a mixture of mutually independent latent components. The independent component analysis (ICA) then aims at estimating these latent components. In this article, we study an ICA method which combines the use of linear and quadratic autocorrelations to enable efficient estimation of various kinds of stationary time series. Statistical properties of the estimator are studied by finding its limiting distribution under general conditions, and the asymptotic variances are derived in the case of ARMA-GARCH model. Tale(s) of a forest – re-creation of a primeval forest in three environmental narratives

We analyze three environmentally conscious works that are concerned with the state of Finnish forests: the documentary film Metsän tarina/Tale of a Forest (2012), the book with the same name (2013) and the series of short documentaries Tarinoita metsästä/Tales from the Forest (2013). By combining methods from arts research and ecology, we ask how the narratives adapt material from nature photography. The film and book present mythic stories and old Finnish beliefs about forests. Informaation piilottaminen draamasarjassa Lost

Tarkastelen tässä tutkielmassa Lost-draamasarjassa (USA 2004–2010) esiintyvää informaation piilottamista. Esittelen sarjasta poimimieni esimerkkien avulla niitä kerronnan keinoja, joiden avulla sarja viivyttää tiedon paljastamista katsojalle. Pohdin myös piilottamisen ongelmia sekä etuja. In this thesis I examine the hiding of information in the drama series Lost (USA 2004–2010). With examples from Lost I explain the narrative devices used in the series to delay the disclosure of information. I also contemplate the pros and cons of such hiding.

Pro gradu -tutkielmani käsittelee sarjakuva-ekfrasiksen mahdollisuutta sarjakuvassa. Pyrin löytämään vastauksia seuraaviin kysymyksiin: miten ja millaisista teoreettisista lähtökohdista sarjakuva-ekfrasis rakentuu? Voidaanko sarjakuva-ekfrasiksen löytämiseksi luoda vakaata tulkintakehystä, ja pystyykö käsitteelle antamaan pätevää määritelmää? Hypoteesinani on, että sarjakuvan narratiivilla on erityinen merkitys sarjakuva-ekfrasiksen paikantamisessa. Tutkimuskysymykset ja hypoteesi ohjaavat ensin esittelemään teoreettisen viitekehyksen ja sitten soveltamaan rakentunutta teoriaa Timo Mäkelän Kuolematon mestariteos -sarjakuvanovellin analyysissa.
