From propaganda to a blockbuster : the role of nationality in the reinterpretation of Captain America for modern, international audiences

Captain America comics were originally created in the 1940s as war propaganda. In the 2010s the story was remade as a successful movie franchise. Nowadays Hollywood is quite dependent on overseas sales, which is something they need to consider when producing their high-budget films. This thesis concentrates on how the story and the character of Captain America were reshaped to better appeal to modern and international audiences. This is done by comparing the ways America/Americans and other countries/ nationalities are addressed both in the comics and the films. Ubiikin sähköisen tekstuaalisuuden ja digitaalisen median vakiintuminen on saanut kirjailijoiden ja tutkijoiden huomion kiinnittymään jälleen kulttuurin perustekijään: painettuun kirjaan. Paperinen avaruus. Näkökulmia kirjaesineen ja kirjallisuuden materiaalisuuksiin on ensimmäinen suomenkielinen tutkimusjulkaisu, jossa keskitytään kirjallisuuden, erityisesti kirjan, materiaalisuuden kysymyksiin. Kirjaa materiaalisena oliona ja funktionaalisena ilmaisuvälineenä tutkivien vertaisarvioitujen artikkelien lisäksi teoksessa on mukana runoja sekä vapaamuotoisia esseitä.

Tutkielma tarkastelee eettistä Toisen kohtaamista Elfquest -sarjakuvassa. Elfquest on yhdysvaltalaisten Wendy ja Richard Pinin vuodesta 1978 lähtien omakustanteena julkaisema populaari fantasiagenreen kuuluva sarjakuvasarja. Se sijoittuu Kahden kuun maailmaan, jota asuttavat mm. haltiat, peikot ja ihmiset. Elfquest rakentuu haltioiden alkuperän, autenttisuuden ja identiteetin etsinnän varaan ja siinä korostuvat erilaisten elämäntyylien ja maailmankuvien sovittelu ja yhteenkuuluvuus. Abstract: This article investigates the use of repeating panels in relation to speculative fiction storytelling in graphic novels Watchmen and From Hell , written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons and Eddie Campbell, respectively. Presenting the same panel several times over the course of the narrative is an expressive medium-specific narrative technique available only to comics. In the discussed graphic novels, panel repetition is used to represent the superhuman cognitions of the quantum powered superhero Dr. Manhattan, as well as the magical experiences of Sir William Gull, the homicidal madman behind the brutal Jack the Ripper murders in Victorian London.
