Monitoring peatland water table depth with optical and radar satellite imagery
2022
Peatland water table depth (WTD) and wetness have widely been monitored with optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) remote sensing but there is a lack of studies that have used multi-sensor data, i.e., combination of optical and SAR data. We assessed how well WTD can be monitored with remote sensing data, whether multi-sensor approach boosts explanatory capacity and whether there are differences in regression performance between data and peatland types. Our data consisted of continuous multiannual WTD data from altogether 50 restored and undrained Finnish peatlands, and optical (Landsat 5–8, Sentinel-2) and Sentinel-1 C-band SAR data processed in Google Earth Engine. We calculated rando…
Ilmakuvausjournalismin uudet ulottuvuudet : Drooneista satelliitteihin
2021
Ilmakuvausjournalismin uudet ulottuvuudet: Drooneista satelliitteihin -tutkimus- ja kehityshankkeen (DroSat) loppuraportissa kerrotaan projektin tärkeimmät tulokset. Hanke toteutettiin vuosien 2020–2021 aikana Jyväskylän yliopiston kieli- ja viestintätieteen laitoksella Media-alan tutkimussäätiön rahoituksella. Muun muassa koronapandemian takia alunperin yksivuotiseksi tarkoitettu hanke venyi käytännössä monivuotiseksi. Tutkimusaineiston kerääminen, live-etäkoulutuksen pilotointi sekä ensimmäinen tutkimusjulkaisu ajoittuivat vuoteen 2020. Tutkimustulosten esittely alan tieteellisissä konferensseissa tapahtui kuitenkin pääasiassa vasta vuoden 2021 aikana, ja tutkimustulosten tieteellinen jul…
The effect of spatial and temporal scale on camouflage in North African rodents
2022
Abstract Background matching, a common form of camouflage, is a widespread anti-predator adaptation that hinders detection or recognition by increasing the resemblance of prey to its environment. However, the natural environment is complex and both spatially and temporally variable, which constrains effective background matching as an anti-predator strategy. Here, using remote sensing data (publicly available satellite imagery), we investigated how variation of habitat parameters predicts background matching in 16 Sahara–Sahel rodent species across spatial and temporal scales. All fur colour parameters (hue, saturation and brightness) strongly matched the respective habitats of the differen…
The Networked Utilisation of Satellite Images and Geospatial Technology in Journalism
2022
Satellite technology has become increasingly affordable and accessible in the past few decades. This has enabled many newsrooms to engage with genuinely remote journalism. This chapter explores the networked nature of satellite journalism and investigates its inclusion of experts and citizens outside newsrooms. Satellite journalism uses satellite-borne technology either as a (1) part of storytelling or (2) source of information. Academic research on the topic is scarce, so this chapter builds a base of knowledge on the contemporary practices, limitations and ethics—as well as directions of future development—of satellite journalism. By interviewing six journalists and one earth observation …
