A Stereochemically Driven Supramolecular Polymerisation
2018
Anthracyclines self-assemble in water into dimers. In the presence of sufficiently high salt (NaCl) concentrations, solutions of the antibiotic doxorubicin, but not those of the closely related molecules daunomycin and epirubicin, turn into gels barely compatible with the presence of small oligomers. The use of spectroscopic, scattering, imaging and computational techniques, allowed light to be shed on the self-assembly process that triggered doxorubicin gelification. A complex picture emerged, with doxorubicin molecules assembled into long, highly chiral, supramolecular aggregates made of hundreds of units, showing redshifted fluorescence spectra, very short fluorescence lifetimes and smal…

Synthesis and mesomorphism of related series of triphilic ionic liquid crystals based on 1,2,4-triazolium cations
2021
Abstract The synthesis, liquid crystal and conductivity properties of a series of 27 salts based on the 5-(4-(alkyloxy)phenyl)-1,2,4-triazol-4-ium cation bearing a perfluoroalkyl chain with triflate, tetrafluoroborate and bistriflimide anion are reported. The cations are regarded as triphilic on account of their three distinct regions – hydrocarbon, fluorocarbon and ionic. The mesophases were characterised by a combination of polarised optical microscopy, calorimetry and small-angle scattering experiments using both X-rays and neutrons, while thermal stability was probed using thermogravimetric analysis. The liquid crystal properties are found to be dependent on the anion and the length of …
Effect of Pre-Reduction on the Properties and the Catalytic Activity of Pd/Carbon Catalysts: A Comparison with Pd/Al2O3
2013
The effect of pre-reduction in solution with chemical reagents on the catalytic performance and catalyst properties of Pd/carbon catalysts was systematically investigated with a multitechnique approach. The results are critically discussed in comparison to those recently obtained on analogous Pd/alumina catalysts. It was proved that the Pd phase on the carbon surface is characterized by a high mobility, opposite to what occurs on alumina. As a result, the Pd particles on carbon aggregate together during pre-reduction, with a consequent decrease in available metal surface. Pd particles remain aggregated also in reaction conditions; the decreased Pd dispersion negatively affects the catalyst …
Structural and Transport Properties of Bola C-16 Micelles in Water and in Aqueous Electrolyte Solutions
2003
Aqueous solutions containing a bolaform surfactant [R,ω-(4,7,10,13-pentaoxa-16-azacyclooctadecane)- hexadecane], with and without electrolytes have been investigated as a function of surfactant concentration and ionic strength. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS), NMR self-diffusion, and other physical-chemical methods were used. From the analysis of SANS data it was inferred that in water the surfactant forms slightly charged ellipsoidal micelles, because of the partial hydrolysis of amino groups. The aggregates grow with the increase of concentration, becoming more elongated. Due to the selective complexing ability of aza crown ether units, significant differences were observed upon add…
Morphology and local organization of water-containing (1R,2S)-Dodecyl(2-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-phenylethyl)dimethylammonium bromide reverse micelles disp…
2014
The structure of (1R,2S)-dodecyl(2-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-phenylethyl)dimethylammonium bromide (DMEB) reverse micelles, at various water-to-surfactant molar ratio (R-w, R-w = [water]/[DMEB]) and DMEB concentrations, has been investigated by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). SAXS data of dry reverse micelles are consistent with a model of spherical hydrophilic core surrounded by DMEB alkyl chains whose polydispersity decreases significantly with surfactant concentration. By adding water, a sphere to cylinder transition occurs leading to a one-dimensional growth of reverse micellar cores with R-w and surfactant concentration. Th…
The effect of macromolecular architecture of ethylene copolymers with multi-alkenylsilsesquioxane on morphological, rheological and dynamic mechanica…
2021
Abstract The influence of the degree and the way of incorporation of multi-alkenylsilsesquioxane into the polymer chain on morphological, rheological and dynamic mechanical parameters were determined. It was found that POSS incorporated into the polymer chain was located outside the crystalline structure of lamella in amorphous phase. The incorporation of POSS-6-2 as a pendant group resulted in significant increase of separation of macromolecules. The key factor in rheological and dynamic mechanical behavior of copolymers turned out to be the way of POSS incorporation into the polymer chain. The incorporation of POSS into the polymer chain as a pendant group resulted in decreased relaxation…
Formation of covalent di-tyrosine dimers in recombinant α-synuclein
2015
Parkinson's disease is associated with fibril deposition in the diseased brain. Misfolding events of the intrinsically disordered synaptic protein α-synuclein are suggested to lead to the formation of transient oligomeric and cytotoxic species. The etiology of Parkinson's disease is further associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and formation of reactive oxygen species. Oxidative stress causes chemical modification of native α-synuclein, plausibly further influencing misfolding events. Here, we present evidence for the spontaneous formation of covalent di-tyrosine α-synuclein dimers in standard recombinant protein preparations, induced without extrinsic oxidative or nitrative agents. The…
Bulk morphologies of polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) triblock terpolymers
2015
Abstract The self-assembly of block copolymers in the bulk phase enables the formation of complex nanostructures with sub 100 nm periodicities and long-range order, both relevant for nanotechnology applications. Here, we map the bulk phase behavior of polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) (SBT) triblock terpolymers on a series of narrowly distributed polymers with widely different block volume fractions, ϕS, ϕB and ϕT. In dependence of ϕ, we find the lamella–lamella, core-shell cylinder, cylinder-in-lamella and core-shell gyroid morphology, but also a rarely observed cylinder-in-lamella phase. The bulk morphologies are thoroughly characterized by transmission e…
Stability and disassembly properties of human naïve Hsp60 and bacterial GroEL chaperonins.
2015
Human Hsp60 chaperonin and its bacterial homolog GroEL, in association with the corresponding co-chaperonins Hsp10 and GroES, constitute important chaperone systems promoting the proper folding of several mitochondrial proteins. Hsp60 is also currently described as a ubiquitous molecule with multiple roles both in health conditions and in several diseases. Naïve Hsp60 bearing the mitochondrial import signal has been recently demonstrated to present different oligomeric organizations with respect to GroEL, suggesting new possible physiological functions. Here we present a combined investigation with circular dichroism and small-angle X-ray scattering of structure, self-organization, and sta…
