Constraining inverse-curvature gravity with supernovae

2005

We show that the current accelerated expansion of the Universe can be explained without resorting to dark energy. Models of generalized modified gravity, with inverse powers of the curvature can have late time accelerating attractors without conflicting with solar system experiments. We have solved the Friedman equations for the full dynamical range of the evolution of the Universe. This allows us to perform a detailed analysis of Supernovae data in the context of such models that results in an excellent fit. Confronting the IR Fixed Point Cosmology with High Redshift Observations

We use high-redshift type Ia supernova and compact radio source data in order to test the infrared (IR) fixed point model of the late Universe which was proposed recently. It describes a cosmology with a time dependent cosmological constant and Newton constant whose dynamics arises from an underlying renormalization group flow near an IR-attractive fixed point. Without any finetuning or quintessence field it yields $\Omega_{\rm M}=\Omega_{\Lambda}=1/2$. Measurements of rill and gully erosion in Sicily

This article reports the results of a field investigation aimed to characterize the morphology of both rills monitored at Sparacia experimental area and two ephemeral gullies (EGs) located in the Tremamargi basin, Sicily, Italy. At first, the available literature data together with the measurements carried out in this investigation were used to show that the EG length is a key parameter for the estimation of the eroded volume. Shift- and scale-invariant recognition of contour objects with logarithmic radial harmonic filters.

The phase-only logarithmic radial harmonic (LRH) filter has been shown to be suitable for scale-invariant block object recognition. However, an important set of objects is the collection of contour functions that results from a digital edge extraction of the original block objects. These contour functions have a constant width that is independent of the scale of the original object. Therefore, since the energy of the contour objects decreases more slowly with the scale factor than does the energy of the block objects, the phase-only LRH filter has difficulties in the recognition tasks when these contour objects are used. Observational Constraints on Undulant Cosmologies

2005

In an undulant universe, cosmic expansion is characterized by alternating periods of acceleration and deceleration. We examine cosmologies in which the dark-energy equation of state varies periodically with the number of e-foldings of the scale factor of the universe, and use observations to constrain the frequency of oscillation. We find a tension between a forceful response to the cosmic coincidence problem and the standard treatment of structure formation.

Unduland universe: expansion with alternating eras of acceleration and deceleration

If the equation of state for 'dark energy' varies periodically, the expansion of the Universe may have undergone alternating eras of acceleration and deceleration. We examine a specific form that survives existing observational tests, does not single out the present state of the Universe as exceptional, and suggests a future much like the matter-dominated past: a smooth expansion without a final inflationary epoch.

Temporal self-imaging effect for chirped laser pulse sequences: Repetition rate and duty cycle tunability

We express parabolic-dispersion-induced transformations of a linearly chirped signal in terms of those suffered by the unchirped version of the same input signal. Specifically, we unveil that any amount of chirping and dispersion produces, aside from a scale factor, the same pulse-distortion effect as a certain parabolic dispersion in the unchirped input. This relevant result allows us to derive, as a particular case, the dispersion condition that leads to the temporal self-imaging phenomenon for laser pulse sequences globally affected by a quadratic-phase modulation. Dissipative scaling of step-pool features

Abstract This paper focuses on the dissipative similarity of step-pool units at rill, flume and stream scale. This investigation is carried out using recent advances in open channel flow resistance, applications of close-range photogrammetry to rill erosion, available published data on step-pool features in flumes and streams and a new dataset of measurements in fixed bed step-pool rills.
