Inside The Glaciers Project: Laser Scanning Of The Grotta Del Gelo (Mount Etna, Italy)
2017
As part of activities of the “Inside the Glaciers” project, managed by an Italian team of speleologists and geologists with the purpose of studying several ice-caves in Europe and South America, a research campaign was recently carried out in Mount Etna (Sicily, Italy). This volcano is the highest active in Europe and hosts more than 200 caves including Grotta del Gelo (Ice Cave) which is located on the Northern flank of Mount Etna at an altitude of about 2040 m a.s.l. This cave was formed during the Etna’s long and most destructive eruption dated from 1614 to 1624 and is one of the most famous because it hosts a small glacier, maybe the southernmost of the Northern hemisphere. Aim of this …
2015
This paper offers a critical interpretation of the geometric and proportional matrices applied to the construction of the 16th-century apses of the churches of San Nicola in Cursi and San Michele Arcangelo in Minervino di Lecce in the Salento peninsula. It also intends to assess possible links between the cases examined and other contemporary edifices in an attempt to identify possible common rules. The study of the geometric matrices used for the construction of these edifices was carried out by means of laser scanning and the creation of digital models to discretize the morphological configuration.
2009
This work is focused on procedures and methods for the production of photorealistic and geometrically correct 3D digital models. The investigation has been addressed to the wooden painted ceiling of the “Sala Magna” in the “Palazzo Steri” of Palermo. The building of the “Steri” starts in 1320 on behalf of Manfredi I Chiaramonte and continues with his heirs Manfredi II and Manfredi III, who built the second floor and provided the building with decorations. In 1601 the Holy Inquisition moved to the Steri and transformed it in a place of imprisonment and torture. The hall in the northern side of the first floor, named “Sala Magna”, was the main room of the building. The ceiling of the “Sala Ma…

La perduta Chiesa dell'Annunziata presso Porta san Giorgio a Palermo: ipotesi e ricostruzioni virtuali
2020
The Annunziata church was destroyed by the bombings of the Allies on May 9 1943 on the city of Palermo. However, important evidence remains of the church, built at the end of the 16th century and located near the San Giorgio gate: a 1832 drawing by Pierre-Joseph Garrez, preserved in Paris, at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, the survey of the architect Nino Pollaci of the early twentieth century, a series of historical photos, the surviving architectural fragments such as the capitals and the painted wooden coffered ceiling, preserved in various Palermitan museums, and above all the bell tower, still the only trace on the site of the now disappeared church of the Annunziata. T…
Immersive Virtual Reality for Cultural Heritage Exploration
2023
Virtual Reality can provide an immersive experience that allows cultural heritage to be experienced in a more realistic and immersive way than traditional showcasing techniques. The objective of this paper is to provide a software pipeline that can be adopted for the realization of immersive experiences in cultural heritage sites. This work has been realized within the 3DLab-Sicilia project, which includes the realization of immersive virtual tours of UNESCO World Heritage sites located in the Sicily area (Italy).
