Inflammation-responsive focal constrictors in the mouse ear microcirculation

2006

In many capillary exchange beds, blood flow is locally regulated by precapillary sphincter-like activity. In this study, we used intravascular tracers and scanning electron microscopy to investigate precapillary blood flow regulation in the mouse ear. Gelatin ink injections of the normal mouse ear demonstrated 6.8 +/- 2.3 axial vessels with a cutoff of detectable tracer in the early branches: 19 +/- 11 focal constrictions were observed along the 1st to 5th order branches of the axial vessels. A perfusion tracer consisting of biotinylated anti-endothelial lectins (Ricinus Communis Agglutin, Lycopersicon Esculentum and Griffonia Simplicifolia) was circulated for 30 min under physiological con…

Bridging Mucosal Vessels Associated with Rhythmically Oscillating Blood Flow in Murine Colitis

2007

Oscillatory blood flow in the microcirculation is generally considered to be the result of cardiopulmonary influences or active vasomotion. In this report, we describe rhythmically oscillating blood flow in the bridging vessels of the mouse colon that appeared to be independent of known biological control mechanisms. Corrosion casting and scanning electron microscopy of the mouse colon demonstrated highly branched bridging vessels that connected the submucosal vessels with the mucosal plexus. Because of similar morphometric characteristics (19 +/- 11 microm vs. 28 +/- 16 microm), bridging arterioles and venules were distinguished by tracking fluorescent nanoparticles through the microcircul…

Morphology and chronology of ischemic mucosal changes in the small intestine

1983

The morphology and chronology of an absolute ischemia was investigated on the small intestine of man and rat. It could be shown that the morphogenesis of ischemic damage to the intestinal mucosa in man does not differ from that in the rat. However, there are crucial and in therapeutic terms significant differences in the time course of the ischemic damage to the intestinal mucosa. Whereas in the small intestine of the rat, the first appreciable alterations - detachment and disruption of the lining epithelium at the villous tip - are already to be observed after absolute ischemia lasting 15 min, in the human small intestine the same lesions only occur after 4 h. A comparable complete necrosi…

Free Bipedicled Radial Forearm and Posterior Interosseous Artery Perforator Flap Phalloplasty

2019

Abstract Introduction The free radial forearm (FRFA) flap is universally still considered as the gold standard technique in penile reconstruction. Typically, a considerably large flap is required, often involving almost the entire circumference of the forearm. Partial necrosis may occur at the distal-most (dorsoradial) part of the flap as a result of insufficient perfusion. Aim To describe a new technique using the posterior interosseous artery (PIOA) to supercharge FRFA phalloplasty. Methods In a 12-month period, all patients having FRFA flap phalloplasty were enrolled. Perioperative, after complete flap dissection, an indocyanine green perfusion scan was performed. In case of insufficient…

Prolonged Cerebral Circulation Time Is the Best Parameter for Predicting Vasospasm during Initial CT Perfusion in Subarachnoid Hemorrhagic Patients

2016

Purpose We sought to imitate angiographic cerebral circulation time (CCT) and create a similar index from baseline CT perfusion (CTP) to better predict vasospasm in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Methods Forty-one SAH patients with available DSA and CTP were retrospectively included. The vasospasm group was comprised of patients with deterioration in conscious functioning and newly developed luminal narrowing; remaining cases were classified as the control group. The angiography CCT (XA-CCT) was defined as the difference in TTP (time to peak) between the selected arterial ROIs and the superior sagittal sinus (SSS). Four arterial ROIs were selected to generate four correspondin…

Species-specific effects of single sensillum ablation on mating position in Drosophila.

2003

0022-0949 (Print) Comparative Study Journal Article Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't; Dipteran insects show a wide range of species-specific mating positions. Interspecific transitions from one position to another may reflect sexual or natural selection, or be pleiotropic consequences of other genetic changes. Like many cyclorrhaphan flies, Drosophila species mate with the male on the back of the female, positioned centrally. Mechanosensory sensilla on the male genitalia of three species of the melanogaster species sub-group of Drosophila have species-specific effects on mating position and on courtship success: ablation of a single pair of bristles on the genital claspers of D. melanogaste…

The study of Positive and Negative Affect in children and adolescents: New advances in a Spanish version of the PANAS

2019

The study of affective disorders among young population has become increasingly relevant in the last years. The PANAS is a widely used questionnaire devoted to assess positive and negative affect. The main purpose of the current study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the PANAS for children (PANAS). The sample consisted of 1032 children and adolescents aged between 10 and 15 years. The ESEM two factor model (Positive Affect and Negative Affect) was found as the most suitable model. The PANAS scores also showed acceptable internal consistency. The ESEM two factor model was invariant across gender and educational level. Results showed statistically significa…

Vessel painting of the microcirculation using fluorescent lipophilic tracers

2005

Flexible approaches to defining microvessel morphometry are useful in the study of both acute and chronic structural changes of the microcirculation. In this report, we examined the utility of the intravascular infusion of lipophilic carbocyanine tracers in the structural assessment of the retina, skin, lung, and colon microcirculation. The microvessel labeling technique, here termed fluorescent vessel painting, involved the intravascular injection of sulfonated lipophilic carbocyanine tracers. The utility of vessel painting in morphometry was assessed using morphometric comparisons with corrosion casting and 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional scanning electron microscopy. The comparisons demo…

Remodeling of alveolar septa after murine pneumonectomy

2015

In most mammals, removing one lung (pneumonectomy) results in the compensatory growth of the remaining lung. In mice, stereological observations have demonstrated an increase in the number of mature alveoli; however, anatomic evidence of the early phases of alveolar growth has remained elusive. To identify changes in the lung microstructure associated with neoalveolarization, we used tissue histology, electron microscopy, and synchrotron imaging to examine the configuration of the alveolar duct after murine pneumonectomy. Systematic histological examination of the cardiac lobe demonstrated no change in the relative frequency of dihedral angle components (Ends, Bends, and Junctions) ( P &gt…

Infrapopliteal Composite Bypass with Autologous Vein and Second Generation Glutaraldehyde Stabilized Human Umbilical Vein (HUV) for Critical Lower Li…

2007

Objective. To audit a single center consecutive series of infrapopliteal composite bypasses with second generation glutaraldehyde stabilized human umbilical vein. Design. Retrospective study. Patients. From January 1996 to July 2006 89 femoro-distal bypasses were constructed in 85 patients with HUV and residual vein segments as composite grafts in the absence of sufficient length of autologous vein. Methods. All patients with infrainguinal bypass operations were registered prospectively. Bypasses to infrapopliteal arteries performed with HUV-composite grafts were reviewed for graft patency, limb salvage, patient survival and possible biodegeneration of the HUV. Results. Early graft thrombos…
