Grain size effect and local disorder in polycrystalline relaxors via scanning probe microscopy

Local piezoresponse of individual grains in polycrystalline Pb0.9125La0.0975(Zr0.65Ti0.35)0.976O3 (PLZT 9.75/65/35) relaxor ceramics is studied using the scanning probe microscopy (SPM) technique. The observed piezoelectric contrast consisting of irregular (labyrinth-type) polarization patterns is attributed to the compositional disorder and consequent charge imbalance caused by high La concentration. A measure of this disorder, the polarization correlation length ξ, is directly determined using an autocorrelation analysis function implemented in the SPM software. Laser irradiation of carbon–tungsten materials

Carbon–tungsten layers deposited on graphite by thermionic vacuum arc (TVA) were directly irradiated with a femtosecond terawatt laser. The morphological and structural changes produced in the irradiated area by different numbers of pulses were systematically explored, both along the spots and in their depths. Although micro-Raman and Synchrotron-x-ray diffraction investigations have shown no carbide formation, they have shown the unexpected presence of embedded nano-diamonds in the areas irradiated with high fluencies. Effect of alloy type and casting technique on the fracture strength of implant-cemented structures.

Objectives: To evaluate the influence of alloy type and casting procedure on the fracture strength (FS) of metallic frameworks for implant-supported fixed prostheses. Study design: Thirty three-unit structures for lower posterior bridges were waxed-up and randomly assigned to two groups (n=15) according to alloy type and casting technique: Group 1 (C): cobalt-chromium cast in a centrifugal machine (TS1, Degussa-Hüls); Group 2 (T): titanium cast in a pressure-differential device (Cyclarc II, Morita). Surface and volume crystallization of amorphous, melt-quenched (Ni50Zr50)99.9P0.1 alloy has been investigated by measurements of the temperature dependencies of the intensity of photostimulated exoelectron emission (EEE) and by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A comparison of these dependencies enables one to assess the tendency of the investigated materials to premature surface crystallization. For the (Ni50Zr50)99.9P0.1 alloy the surface crystallization occurs at temperatures distinctly lower than that for the crystallization in bulk. Current rectification in a single molecule diode: the role of electrode coupling.

We demonstrate large rectification ratios (> 100) in single-molecule junctions based on a metal-oxide cluster (polyoxometalate), using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) both at ambient conditions and at low temperature. These rectification ratios are the largest ever observed in a single-molecule junction, and in addition these junctions sustain current densities larger than 10^5 A/cm^2. By following the variation of the I-V characteristics with tip-molecule separation we demonstrate unambiguously that rectification is due to asymmetric coupling to the electrodes of a molecule with an asymmetric level structure. On the origin of the sigmoid shape in the UO2 oxidation weight gain curves

International audience; Cracking and spalling are known to occur during the oxidation of UO2. However, these phenomena are not considered by the existing kinetic models of the oxidation of UO2 into U3O8. In this study the oxidation of UO2 samples of various sizes from the single crystal to nanopowders, has been followed by isothermal and isobaric thermogravimetry, environmental scanning electron microscopy and in situ X-ray diffraction at temperatures ranging from 250 to 370°C in air. Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy of ultrathinFe∕Mo(110)films usingW∕Au∕Cotips

We report on magnetic contrast observed in low-temperature spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) of Fe nanowires deposited on Mo(110) using tungsten tips covered by $\mathrm{Au}∕\mathrm{Co}$ thin films. Due to the spin reorientation transition of Co films on Au an out-of-plane magnetic sensitivity is obtained for tips with thin cobalt films (up to 8 monolayers of Co), while for thicker Co coverages an in-plane magnetization component can be probed. Spin-Polarized Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy of Ultrathin Films

Using low temperature spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy we have studied the morphology and magnetic properties of ultrathin Fe(0.5 ML)Au(0.5 ML) nanowires prepared on a Mo(110) single crystal. The Fe nanostripes grown by step flow on a Mo(110) at 700 K were covered by Au at RT, and subsequently annealed at 700 K. Differences in the morphology of Au on Fe(110)/Mo(110) and clean Mo(110) surfaces are observed and discussed. After annealing, the Mo is covered by a homogeneous FeAu ML alloy with several iron enriched islands which reveal an out-of-plane magnetic contrast. Direct lateral exchange coupling has been observed for these islands.

Interfacial disorder of graphene grown at high temperatures on 4H-SiC(000-1)

This paper presents an investigation of the morphological and structural properties of graphene (Gr) grown on SiC(000-1) by thermal treatments at high temperatures (from 1850 to 1950 °C) in Ar at atmospheric pressure. Atomic force microscopy and micro-Raman spectroscopy showed that the grown Gr films are laterally inhomogeneous in the number of layers, and that regions with different stacking-type (coupled or decoupled Gr films) can coexist in the same sample. Scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy shoed that a nm-thick C-Si-O amorphous layer is present at the interface between Gr and SiC. A new route to grow oxide nanostructures based on metal displacement deposition. Lanthanides oxy/hydroxides growth

Abstract A metal displacement reaction has been used in order to cause precipitation of oxide nanostructures within pores of anodic alumina membrane (AAM) templates. Here, we focus on the displacement deposition of LnO/OH (Ln = La, Ce, Sm, Er) nanostructures using Zn as sacrificial anode, employing a specific cell arrangement where a galvanic couple was formed between zinc anode and the Au thin layer covering template pore bottom.
